Papineau IL electrician working on circuit boardThe first step to becoming an electrical tradesman or contractor is finding an electrician trade school near Papineau IL. But with so many vocational schools to pick from, just how do you tackle making sure that you enroll in the right one? Particularly because there are so many variables to consider. For example, many prospective students will commence by searching for schools that are close to their home. After they have found a few that are within commuting distance, they will choose the one with the most affordable tuition. While location and cost are important, they are not the sole qualifications that should be considered. Also important are the reputations of the schools, their accreditation, as well as their job placement and graduation rates. These and other qualifiers should influence your final judgment when choosing an electrician training school. We will cover that checklist in greater detail later in this post. But first, let’s talk a little bit about being an electrician and the training choices that are offered.

Electrician Degree, Certificate and Diploma Options

Papineau IL electrician on power line poleThere are three general options to get electrician training in a vocational or trade school near Papineau IL. You can select a diploma or certificate program, or receive an Associate Degree. Bachelor’s Degrees are available at some schools, but are not as common as the other three alternatives. In many cases these programs are offered together with an apprenticeship, which are required by most states to become licensed or if you wish to earn certification. Following are brief summaries of the three most prevalent programs offered.

  • Diploma and Certificate Programs are generally offered by Illinois vocational and trade schools and take approximately a year to complete. They furnish a solid foundation and are aimed towards those who wish to join an apprenticeship faster as a journeyman electrician.
  • Associate Degrees require 2 years to finish and are offered by Illinois junior or community colleges, typically as an Associate Degree in Electrical Technology. They offer a more comprehensive education while supplying the foundation that readies students to join their apprenticeship program.

As earlier stated, Bachelor’s Degree programs are available at some Illinois institutions, but are less popular at 4 years than the other shorter programs. The majority of states require that an apprenticeship of at least 2 years and more typically four years be carried out prior to licensing. For that reason, the majority of students are eager to start their paid apprenticeship, especially if it’s not part of their educational program.

Electrician Licensing and Certification Requirements

Papineau IL electrician wiring boxElectricians in Papineau IL can perform a multitude of functions, including testing, installing and replacing electrical systems, and ensuring that the wiring in houses and buildings comply with code standards. After completing an apprenticeship, journeyman electricians are required to become licensed in most states or municipalities. The period of apprenticeship differs by state, but typically about 4 to 5 years of practical experience is needed in order to take the licensing examination. The exams commonly evaluate general knowledge and electrical theory, along with understanding of the National Electrical Code (NEC). Receiving certification is also an optional method for an electrician to identify him or herself as a skilled and experienced professional. The certifications available differ by state and can be acquired in various specialties, including cable splicing as an example. The certification procedure in most cases entails three levels of proficiency:

  • An experience requirement
  • Passing a written exam
  • Passing a practical exam

Examples of certifying agencies include the National Joint Apprenticeship and Training Committee (NJATC) as well as the National Institute for Certification in Engineering Technologies (NICET). It’s crucial that the electrician trade school that you choose not only provides a solid educational foundation, but also helps ready you for passing any certification and licensing examinations that you might be required to pass in the future.

Enrolling in Electrician Training Classes Online

Papineau IL student attending electrician school onlineAn option that you may have looked at is enrolling in an electrician online school to earn a certificate or degree. Although online training programs have become more prevalent as a way of attending class without needing to travel, in this instance they are not totally internet based. Pretty much all electrician schools require some attendance on campus to obtain practical hands-on training. But since the balance of the classes can be attended online, internet learning may be a more practical alternative for students that have minimal time for schooling. And as a bonus numerous online degree programs have a lower tuition cost compared to their on campus counterparts. Commuting expenses from Papineau IL are also lessened and some of the study materials can be available online as well. All of these benefits can make electrician online vocational schools more affordable and convenient. And many are fully accredited, which we will cover in our due diligence checklist.

What to Ask Electrician Technical Schools

Questions to ask Papineau IL electrician schoolsWhen you have made a decision to earn a certificate, diploma or degree, you can begin to focus your school options. Considering that there are so many electrician vocational and trade schools in the Papineau IL region, it’s essential to have a checklist of criteria that each school must meet. The initial two that we discussed were location and the cost of tuition. If you have an interest in earning an degree online, then that must be a feature that your chosen school offers. And while all three qualifiers may be important when making your selection, there are additional variables that must be taken into account as well. Below is a checklist of those added qualifiers that you will need to research prior to choosing an electrical tech school.

Accreditation.  Numerous electrician vocational programs have received either a regional or a national accreditation. They can earn Institutional Accreditation, which involves the school’s programs as a whole, or Programmatic Accreditation, which pertains to an individual program, such as electrical technology. Verify that the Papineau IL school is accredited by a U.S. Department of Education approved accrediting organization, for example the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology. Along with helping ensure that you obtain a quality education, it may assist in acquiring financial aid or student loans, which are often unavailable for non-accredited schools. Also, many states require that the electrician training course be accredited in order to be approved for licensing.

High Completion and Placement Rates.  Ask the electrician training programs you are reviewing what their completion rates are. The completion rate is the percentage of students who enroll in and finish the program. A low completion rate may signify that students were disappointed with the program and quit. It may also suggest that the instructors were not qualified to instruct the students. It’s also essential that the schools have higher job placement rates. Older and/or more reputable schools may have a broader directory of graduates, which can mean more contacts for the school to employ for their apprenticeship and job placement programs. A high job placement rate will not only validate that the school has an excellent reputation within the trade, but additionally that it has the network of contacts to help Papineau IL grads obtain apprenticeships or employment.

Apprenticeship Programs.  Numerous electrician trade programs are taught in conjunction with an internship or an apprenticeship program. Those participating vocational and technical programs will help place you in an apprenticeship program within their network of electrician companies or trade unions. Check if the schools you are considering have working partnerships with Papineau IL area electricians or electrical professionals. An apprenticeship not only provides a rewarding experience by supplying practical training, but it also furnishes employment opportunities and helps to establish relationships in the local electrician professional community.

Modern Facilities.  Make certain that the campus facilities and the tools that you will be instructed on are up-to-date and what you will be working with in the field. If you are already in an internship or an apprenticeship, talk to the electrical technician you are working under concerning what you should be looking for. If not, ask a local Papineau IL electrical contractor if they can provide some suggestions. Additionally keep in mind that unless you are willing to relocate, the school needs to be within commuting distance of your Papineau residence. Remember that if you decide to enroll in an out-of-state school, in addition to moving costs there may be increased tuition charges compared to in-state residents.

Smaller Classes.   It’s important that you get as much individualized training as possible, which can be difficult in larger classes. Ask if you can monitor a couple of the classes so that you can see how large they are and witness first hand the interaction between students and teachers. Speak to some of the students and get their comments regarding class sizes and instruction. Last, talk with some of the instructors and find out what their level of experience is and what degrees or certifications they have earned.

Flexible Scheduling.  Verify that the class schedules for the schools you are evaluating are flexible enough to meet your needs. If you are only able to attend classes at night or on weekends near Papineau IL, confirm that the programs you are considering offer those choices. If you can only attend on a part-time basis, be sure that the school you select allows part-time enrollment. Also, check out what the protocol is to make-up classes should you miss any because of work, illness or family issues.
