But with so many vocational schools to select from, just how do you tackle making certain that you enroll in the right one? Especially because there are a number of points to evaluate. For example, some potential students will commence by searching for schools that are nearby their home. When they have located some that are within commuting range, they will select the one with the most affordable tuition. Even though location and cost are important, they are not the sole qualifications that must be examined. Also critical are the accreditation and reputations of the schools, in addition to their job placement and graduation rates. Electrician Degree, Certificate and Diploma Options

Tonica IL electrician on power line poleThere are several approaches to obtain electrician instruction in a technical or vocational school near Tonica IL. You can choose a certificate or diploma program, or obtain an Associate Degree. Bachelor’s Degrees are offered at a few schools, but are not as prevalent as the first three alternatives. In many cases these programs are made available combined with an apprenticeship program, which are required by the majority of states to be licensed or if you would like to become certified. Bellow are brief explanations of the three most common programs available.

  • Certificate and Diploma Programs are typically offered by Illinois trade and technical schools and require approximately a year to complete. They provide a good foundation and are aimed towards students who would like to join an apprenticeship faster as a journeyman electrician.
  • Associate Degree Programs involve 2 years to finish and are offered by Illinois community colleges, typically as an Associate Degree in Electrical Technology. They provide a more extensive education while supplying the foundation that prepares students to enter into their apprenticeship program.

As previously stated, Bachelor’s Degrees are accessible at certain Illinois institutions, but are less favored at 4 years than the other briefer programs. Many states mandate that an apprenticeship of at least 2 years and in most cases four years be completed prior to licensing. For that reason, most students are eager to commence their paid apprenticeship, particularly if it’s not part of their academic program.

Electrician License and Certification Requirements

Tonica IL electrician wiring boxElectricians in Tonica IL can perform a wide range of services, such as testing, installing and replacing electrical systems, and making sure that the wiring in buildings and homes comply with code standards. After finishing an apprenticeship, journeyman electricians are required to be licensed in most states or municipalities. The period of apprenticeship differs by state, but commonly around 4 to 5 years of prior experience is needed in order to take the licensing examination. The exams usually test electrical theory and general knowledge, in addition to knowledge of the National Electrical Code (NEC). Receiving certification is also a voluntary method for an electrician to distinguish him or herself as a skilled and experienced professional. The certifications available vary by state and can be obtained in various specialties, such as cable splicing as an example. The certification procedure usually involves 3 levels of competency:

  • An experience requirement
  • Passing a written exam
  • Passing a practical exam

Examples of certifying agencies include the National Joint Apprenticeship and Training Committee (NJATC) along with the National Institute for Certification in Engineering Technologies (NICET). It’s crucial that the electrician vocational school that you select not only furnishes a strong academic foundation, but also helps prep you for passing any certification and licensing examinations that you might be required to pass in the future.

The initial two that we discussed were location and tuition expense. If you have an interest in earning an online degree, then that must be an option that your final school offers. And while all three qualifiers may be critical when making your selection, there are additional factors that need to be considered also. Following is a checklist of those additional qualifications that you will need to analyze prior to choosing an electrical technical school.

Accreditation.  A large number of electrician vocational programs have earned either a regional or a national accreditation. They may acquire Institutional Accreditation, which involves the school’s programs as a whole, or Programmatic Accreditation, which relates to an individual program, for instance electrical technology. Verify that the Tonica IL program is accredited by a U.S. Department of Education recognized accrediting organization, which includes the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology. In addition to helping make certain that you obtain an excellent education, it can help in obtaining financial aid or student loans, which are in many cases not available for non-accredited schools. Also, a number of states mandate that the electrician training program be accredited in order to be approved for licensing.

High Completion and Placement Rates.  Ask the electrician schools you are looking at what their completion rates are. The completion rate is the percentage of students who enroll in and complete the program. A lower completion rate might signify that students were disappointed with the course and quit. It may also mean that the teachers were not qualified to instruct the students. It’s also essential that the schools have higher job placement rates. Older and/or more reputable schools may have a broader list of graduates, which may mean more contacts for the school to employ for their apprenticeship and job placement programs. A high job placement rate can not only validate that the school has an excellent reputation within the industry, but additionally that it has the network of contacts to assist Tonica IL grads obtain apprenticeships or jobs.

Apprenticeship Programs.  Numerous electrician trade programs are taught together with an apprenticeship or an internship program. Those participating vocational and technical schools will help place you in an apprenticeship program inside their network of electrician companies or labor unions. Find out if the schools you are comparing have referring partnerships with Tonica IL area electricians or electrical contractors. An apprenticeship not only offers a valuable experience by supplying hands-on training, but it also supplies job opportunities and helps to establish relationships in the local electrician professional community.

Modern Facilities.  Make sure that the campus facilities and the tools that you will be trained on are state-of-the-art and what you will be using on the job. If you are already in an internship or an apprenticeship, consult with the electrical specialist you are working under regarding what you should be looking for. Otherwise, ask a local Tonica IL electrical contracting company if they can provide some tips. Also keep in mind that unless you are able to relocate, the school needs to be within driving distance of your Tonica residence. Take note that if you decide to attend an out-of-state school, in addition to moving costs there may be increased tuition fees compared to in-state residents.

Smaller Classes.   It’s desirable that you receive as much one-on-one instruction as possible, which can be difficult in bigger classes. Ask if you can monitor a few of the classes so that you can observe how large they are and experience the interaction between students and instructors. Talk to several of the students and get their opinions regarding class sizes and instruction. Finally, speak with some of the teachers and learn what their level of experience is and what degrees or certifications they hold.

Flexible Scheduling.  Make sure that the class schedules for the schools you are assessing are flexible enough to meet your needs. If you are only able to attend classes at night or on weekends near Tonica IL, check that the programs you are looking at offer those choices. If you can only attend on a part-time basis, be sure that the school you select allows part-time enrollment. Additionally, ask what the protocol is to make-up classes should you miss any due to work, sickness or family emergencies.
