Bargersville IN electrician working on circuit boardThe initial step to learning to be an electrical contractor or tradesman is finding an electrician trade school near Bargersville IN. But with numerous vocational schools to choose from, just how do you go about making certain that you enroll in the ideal one? Especially since there are a number of points to consider. For example, some prospective students will commence by searching for schools that are close to their home. When they have located several that are within commuting range, they will decide on the one with the cheapest tuition. While cost and location are significant, they are not the sole qualifications that need to be considered. Also important are the accreditation and reputations of the schools, along with their job placement and graduation rates. These and additional qualifiers should influence your final judgment when picking an electrician trade school. We will talk about that checklist in more detail later in this post. But to begin with, let’s review a little bit about being an electrician and the training options that are available.

Electrician Diploma, Certificate and Degree Programs

Bargersville IN electrician on power line poleThere are multiple options to receive electrician training in a technical or vocational school near Bargersville IN. You can enroll in a certificate or diploma program, or receive an Associate Degree. Bachelor’s Degrees are offered at some schools, but are not as common as the first three options. Often these programs are made available in conjunction with an apprenticeship program, which are required by most states in order to be licensed or if you want to become certified. Following are brief summaries of the 3 most typical programs available.

  • Certificate and Diploma Programs are usually provided by Indiana trade and technical schools and require about a year to complete. They furnish a good foundation and are geared towards individuals who would like to get into an apprenticeship faster as a journeyman electrician.
  • Associate Degree Programs require two years to finish and are offered by Indiana junior or community colleges, usually as an Associate Degree in Electrical Technology. They provide a more extensive education while supplying the foundation that prepares students to enter into their apprenticeship program.

As previously mentioned, Bachelor’s Degrees are offered at certain Indiana institutions, but are less favored at four years than the other briefer programs. The majority of states mandate that an apprenticeship of no less than 2 years and more typically 4 years be completed prior to licensing. Because of that, the majority of students are eager to start their paid apprenticeship, particularly if it’s not part of their educational program.

Electrician Licensing and Certification Guidelines

Bargersville IN electrician wiring boxElectricians in Bargersville IN can perform a multitude of functions, including testing, installing and replacing electrical systems, and making sure that the wiring in buildings and homes are up to code standards. After finishing an apprenticeship, journeyman electricians are required to become licensed in the majority of states or municipalities. The length of apprenticeship differs by state, but commonly about 4 to 5 years of prior experience is required before taking the licensing exam. The exams usually assess electrical theory and general knowledge, in addition to understanding of the National Electrical Code (NEC). Receiving certification is also an optional method for an electrician to differentiate him or herself as a experienced and skilled professional. The certifications available vary by state and may be earned in several specializations, including cable splicing as an example. The certification procedure in most cases entails 3 levels of proficiency:

  • An experience requirement
  • Passing a written exam
  • Passing a practical exam

Examples of certifying agencies include the National Joint Apprenticeship and Training Committee (NJATC) as well as the National Institute for Certification in Engineering Technologies (NICET). It’s imperative that the electrician tech school that you pick not only delivers a solid academic foundation, but also helps prep you for passing any licensing and certification examinations that you may need to pass in the future.

Enrolling in Electrician Training Classes Online

Bargersville IN student attending electrician school onlineAn option that you may have looked at is selecting an online electrician school to earn a degree or a certificate. Even though online training programs have become more prevalent as a way of attending class without the need for travel, in this case they are not totally internet based. Just about all electrician schools require some attendance on campus to get hands-on practical training. But since the remainder of the classes may be accessed online, internet learning can be a more practical choice for students that have limited time for education. And as a bonus numerous online training programs have a lower tuition cost compared to their on-campus competitors. Travelling expenses from Bargersville IN are also reduced and some of the study materials can be accessed on line as well. All of these advantages can make online electrician trade schools more economical and accessible. And many are fully accredited, which we will cover in our due diligence checklist.

Things to Ask Electrician Vocational Schools

Questions to ask Bargersville IN electrician schoolsOnce you have decided to earn a diploma, certificate or degree, you can start to focus your training options. Since there are so many electrician vocational and trade schools in the Bargersville IN region, it’s imperative to have a checklist of criteria that each school must meet. The first two that we mentioned were location and the cost of tuition. If you have an interest in earning an degree online, then that needs to be a feature that your chosen school offers. And while all three qualifiers may be critical when making your decision, there are additional variables that must be considered also. Below is a checklist of those additional qualifiers that you will need to research before selecting an electrical trade school.

Accreditation.  Many electrician vocational programs have acquired either a regional or a national accreditation. They may acquire Institutional Accreditation, which involves the school’s programs overall, or Programmatic Accreditation, which relates to a specific program, such as electrical technology. Make sure that the Bargersville IN program is accredited by a U.S. Department of Education acknowledged accrediting agency, such as the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology. Along with helping ensure that you get a quality education, it can help in acquiring financial assistance or student loans, which are in many cases unavailable for non-accredited schools. Also, a number of states require that the electrician training course be accredited in order to qualify for licensing.

High Completion and Placement Rates.  Ask the electrician schools you are looking at what their completion rates are. The completion rate is the percentage of students who enroll in and finish the program. A low completion rate may suggest that students were unhappy with the course and dropped out. It could also suggest that the teachers were not qualified to train the students. It’s also important that the schools have high job placement rates. Older and/or more reputable schools may have a more extensive directory of alumni, which may mean more contacts for the school to use for their apprenticeship and job placement programs. A high job placement rate will not only affirm that the school has a good reputation within the field, but additionally that it has the network of contacts to help Bargersville IN students secure apprenticeships or employment.

Apprenticeship Programs.  Numerous electrician trade programs are taught together with an apprenticeship or an internship program. Those participating trade and vocational schools will help place you in an apprenticeship program inside their network of electrician businesses or labor unions. Check if the schools you are considering have working partnerships with Bargersville IN area electricians or electrical companies. An apprenticeship not only provides a valuable experience by providing hands-on training, but it also supplies employment opportunities and helps to form relationships in the regional electrician professional community.

Modern Facilities.  Make sure that the school facilities and the equipment that you will be trained on are up-to-date and what you will be using in the field. If you are already in an internship or an apprenticeship, consult with the electrical technician you are working with concerning what you should be looking for. If not, ask a local Bargersville IN electrical contractor if they can provide some tips. Also bear in mind that unless you can relocate, the school needs to be within driving distance of your Bargersville residence. Remember that if you decide to enroll in an out-of-state school, in addition to moving costs there may be higher tuition charges compared to in-state residents.

Smaller Classes.   It’s desirable that you receive as much individualized instruction as possible, which can be difficult in larger classes. Ask if you can monitor a few of the classes so that you can observe how big they are and witness first hand the interaction between students and teachers. Talk to a few of the students and get their opinions concerning class sizes and instruction. Finally, speak to some of the instructors and find out what their level of expertise is and what certifications or degrees they hold.

Flexible Scheduling.  Confirm that the class schedules for the schools you are assessing are flexible enough to fulfill your needs. If you are only able to attend classes in the evening or on weekends near Bargersville IN, check that the programs you are reviewing offer those choices. If you can only attend on a part-time basis, make sure that the school you select allows part-time enrollment. Also, find out what the policy is to make-up classes should you miss any because of work, illness or family emergencies.

Classes should be small in size and every student must have their own equipment to train with. Classroom teaching needs to offer a real-world perspective, and the training program should be up-to-date and in-line with industry standards.
