Electrician Certificate, Diploma and Degree Options

Connersville IN electrician on power line poleThere are multiple ways to obtain electrician training in a trade or technical school near Connersville IN. You can enroll in a certificate or diploma program, or earn an Associate Degree. Bachelor’s Degrees are available at some schools, but are not as common as the first three options. Frequently these programs are offered together with an apprenticeship program, which are mandated by the majority of states in order to become licensed or if you would like to earn certification. Bellow are short descriptions of the 3 most prevalent programs available.

  • Certificate and Diploma Programs are typically offered by Indiana vocational and trade schools and require about a year to finish. They furnish a good foundation and are geared towards individuals who would like to join an apprenticeship faster as a journeyman electrician.
  • Associate Degree Programs take two years to complete and are offered by Indiana community colleges, usually as an Associate Degree in Electrical Technology. They provide a more extensive education while supplying the foundation that readies students to join their apprenticeship program.

As earlier stated, Bachelor’s Degrees are offered at some Indiana colleges, but are less favored at 4 years than the other shorter programs. Most states require that an apprenticeship of at least 2 years and more typically 4 years be carried out before licensing. For that reason, the majority of students are anxious to begin their paid apprenticeship, especially if it’s not a component of their academic program.

Electrician Certification and Licensing Criteria

Connersville IN electrician wiring boxElectricians in Connersville IN can undertake a vast array of functions, such as installing, replacing and testing electrical systems, and ensuring that the wiring in houses and buildings comply with code standards. After finishing an apprenticeship, journeyman electricians are required to be licensed in most municipalities and states. The length of apprenticeship differs by state, but generally about 4 to 5 years of experience is called for before taking the licensing exam. The exams typically assess electrical theory and general knowledge, as well as understanding of the National Electrical Code (NEC). Receiving certification is also an optional way for an electrician to identify her or himself as a skilled and experienced professional. The certifications offered vary by state and may be obtained in numerous specializations, such as cable splicing as an example. The certification procedure in most cases involves three levels of proficiency:

  • An experience requirement
  • Passing a written exam
  • Passing a practical exam

Examples of certifying agencies include the National Joint Apprenticeship and Training Committee (NJATC) and also the National Institute for Certification in Engineering Technologies (NICET). It’s important that the electrician trade school that you choose not only furnishes a solid academic foundation, but also helps prep you for passing any certification and licensing examinations that you may need to pass in the future.

The completion rate is the portion or percentage of students who enroll in and complete the course. A low completion rate could signify that students were disappointed with the program and quit. It may also indicate that the teachers were not competent to instruct the students. It’s also essential that the schools have high job placement rates. Older and/or more reputable schools may have a broader list of graduates, which can produce more contacts for the school to use for their apprenticeship and job placement programs. A high job placement rate will not only confirm that the school has an excellent reputation within the trade, but also that it has the network of contacts to assist Connersville IN grads secure apprenticeships or jobs.

Apprenticeship Programs.  Most electrician vocational programs are taught together with an apprenticeship or an internship program. An apprenticeship not only offers a rewarding experience by supplying practical training, but it also provides job opportunities and helps to build relationships in the regional electrician professional community.

Modern Facilities.  Make sure that the school facilities and the equipment that you will be trained on are up-to-date and what you will be using in the field. If you are currently in an internship or an apprenticeship, talk to the electrical specialist you are working with concerning what you should be expecting. If not, ask a local Connersville IN electrical contractor if they can give you some pointers. Also keep in mind that unless you are willing to move, the school must be within commuting distance of your Connersville home. Take note that if you decide to attend an out-of-state school, besides the added moving costs there may be higher tuition fees compared to in-state residents.

Smaller Classes.   It’s important that you receive as much personalized training as possible, which can be difficult in larger classes. Ask if you can sit in on some of the classes so that you can observe how big they are and experience the interaction between instructors and students. Speak to several of the students and get their opinions relating to class sizes and instruction. Finally, speak to some of the teachers and find out what their level of experience is and what degrees or certifications they hold.

Flexible Scheduling.  Make sure that the class schedules for the programs you are reviewing are flexible enough to handle your needs. If you can only attend classes in the evening or on weekends near Connersville IN, confirm that the programs you are looking at offer those choices. If you can only attend on a part-time basis, be sure that the school you select permits part-time enrollment.
