Electrician Degree, Certificate and Diploma Programs

Crawfordsville IN electrician on power line poleThere are multiple approaches to obtain electrician instruction in a technical or vocational school near Crawfordsville IN. You may select a diploma or certificate program, or receive an Associate Degree. Bachelor’s Degrees are obtainable at a few schools, but are not as common as the other three alternatives. Often these programs are offered in conjunction with an apprenticeship program, which are mandated by the majority of states in order to become licensed or if you wish to earn certification. Following are brief descriptions of the 3 most common programs available.

  • Certificate and Diploma Programs are typically offered by Indiana vocational and trade schools and take approximately a year to complete. They furnish a good foundation and are aimed towards students who would like to join an apprenticeship faster as a journeyman electrician.
  • Associate Degrees involve two years to finish and are offered by Indiana community colleges, typically as an Associate Degree in Electrical Technology. They offer a more extensive education while providing the foundation that prepares students to begin their apprenticeship program.

As previously stated, Bachelor’s Degrees are accessible at some Indiana colleges, but are less preferred at four years than the other briefer programs. Many states require that an apprenticeship of no less than 2 years and in most cases four years be completed prior to licensing. For that reason, most students are eager to start their paid apprenticeship, particularly if it’s not a component of their educational program.

Electrician Licensing and Certification Guidelines

Crawfordsville IN electrician wiring boxElectricians in Crawfordsville IN can undertake a vast array of services, including testing, installing and replacing electrical systems, and ensuring that the wiring in buildings and homes are up to code standards. After concluding an apprenticeship, journeyman electricians are required to become licensed in the majority of municipalities and states. The period of apprenticeship differs by state, but generally about four to five years of experience is needed before taking the licensing examination. The exams commonly assess electrical theory and general knowledge, as well as understanding of the National Electrical Code (NEC). Obtaining certification is also a voluntary method for an electrician to distinguish her or himself as a skilled and experienced professional. The certifications offered differ by state and can be earned in various specialties, such as cable splicing as an example. The certification procedure in most cases includes three levels of competency:

  • An experience requirement
  • Passing a written exam
  • Passing a practical exam

Examples of certifying agencies include the National Joint Apprenticeship and Training Committee (NJATC) and also the National Institute for Certification in Engineering Technologies (NICET). It’s important that the electrician trade school that you pick not only furnishes a strong educational foundation, but also helps prepare you for passing any licensing and certification examinations that you may be required to pass in the future.

It may also mean that the instructors were not qualified to train the students. It’s also essential that the schools have high job placement rates. Older and/or more reputable schools may have a broader directory of graduates, which may produce more contacts for the school to use for their apprenticeship and job placement programs. A high job placement rate will not only validate that the school has an excellent reputation within the industry, but additionally that it has the network of contacts to assist Crawfordsville IN students obtain apprenticeships or employment.

If you are presently in an internship or an apprenticeship, talk to the electrical technician you are working under concerning what you should be looking for. Otherwise, ask a local Crawfordsville IN electrical company if they can give you some tips. Also bear in mind that unless you can move, the school must be within commuting distance of your Crawfordsville home. Take note that if you decide to attend an out-of-state school, besides the added relocation costs there might be increased tuition fees compared to in-state residents.

Smaller Classes.   It’s important that you get as much individualized instruction as possible, which can be challenging in larger classes. Ask if you can monitor a couple of the classes so that you can see how big they are and experience the interaction between students and teachers. Talk to a few of the students and get their feedback relating to class sizes and instruction. Finally, speak to a few of the teachers and learn what their level of experience is and what certifications or degrees they hold.

Flexible Scheduling.  Confirm that the class schedules for the schools you are assessing are flexible enough to fulfill your needs. Crawfordsville, Indiana

Crawfordsville is a city in Montgomery County in west central Indiana, U.S., 49 mi. west by northwest of Indianapolis.[7] As of the 2010 census, the city had a population of 15,915. The city is the county seat of Montgomery County, the only chartered city and largest populated place in the county.[8] Crawfordsville is part of a broader Indianapolis combined statistical area, although the Lafayette metropolitan statistical area is only thirty miles north. It is home to Wabash College, which was ranked by Forbes as #12 in the United States for undergraduate studies in 2008.[9]

Crawfordsville was founded adjacent to Sugar Creek, a southern tributary of the Wabash River, in 1823 by Virginian Major Ambrose Whitlock, U.S. army, who served under Gen. "Mad" Anthony Wayne in the Northwest Indian War. The city was named for fellow Virginian William H. Crawford, who was Secretary of the Treasury under Presidents Madison and Monroe at that time. Whitlock was the first settler in the town.

In 1813, Williamson Dunn, Henry Ristine, and Major Ambrose Whitlock noted that the site of present-day Crawfordsville was ideal for settlement, surrounded by deciduous forest and potentially arable land, with water provided by a nearby creek, later named Sugar Creek. They returned a decade later to find at least one cabin built. In 1821, William and Jennie Offield had built a cabin on a little creek, later to be known as Offield Creek, four miles southwest of the future site of Crawfordsville.
