Aurora KS electrician working on circuit boardThe first step to becoming an electrical contractor or tradesman is finding an electrician trade school near Aurora KS. But with so many vocational schools to pick from, just how do you go about making sure that you enroll in the right one? Particularly since there are so many factors to evaluate. For instance, some prospective students will start by searching for schools that are close to their home. When they have located a few that are within commuting distance, they will decide on the one with the least expensive tuition. Although cost and location are of importance, they are not the only qualifications that must be examined. Also important are the reputations of the schools, their accreditation, in addition to their graduation and job placement rates. These and additional qualifiers should contribute toward your final decision when choosing an electrician trade school. We will cover that checklist in greater detail later in this article. But to begin with, let’s review a little bit about being an electrician and the instructional options that are accessible.

Electrician Degree, Certificate and Diploma Options

Aurora KS electrician on power line poleThere are multiple approaches to obtain electrician instruction in a technical or vocational school near Aurora KS. You can select a certificate or diploma program, or receive an Associate Degree. Bachelor’s Degrees are obtainable at certain schools, but are not as common as the first three alternatives. In many cases these programs are offered in conjunction with an apprenticeship program, which are mandated by most states in order to become licensed or if you want to become certified. Bellow are short summaries of the three most common programs available.

  • Certificate and Diploma Programs are usually offered by Kansas technical and trade schools and take about a year to complete. They provide a solid foundation and are geared towards individuals who would like to join an apprenticeship more quickly as a journeyman electrician.
  • Associate Degree Programs require two years to finish and are provided by Kansas junior or community colleges, usually as an Associate Degree in Electrical Technology. They furnish a more comprehensive education while providing the foundation that prepares students to join their apprenticeship program.

As earlier mentioned, Bachelor’s Degree programs are accessible at certain Kansas institutions, but are less favored at four years than the other briefer programs. Many states mandate that an apprenticeship of at least 2 years and in most cases 4 years be completed before licensing. Therefore, the majority of students are anxious to begin their paid apprenticeship, especially if it’s not part of their academic program.

Electrician License and Certification Criteria

Aurora KS electrician wiring boxElectricians in Aurora KS can carry out a wide range of services, including installing, replacing and testing electrical systems, and making sure that the wiring in buildings and homes comply with code standards. After completing an apprenticeship, journeyman electricians are required to be licensed in the majority of municipalities and states. The length of apprenticeship varies by state, but generally about 4 to 5 years of practical experience is needed before taking the licensing exam. The exams usually assess general knowledge and electrical theory, in addition to understanding of the National Electrical Code (NEC). Receiving certification is also an optional way for an electrician to identify her or himself as a skilled and experienced professional. The certifications available differ by state and may be obtained in several specialties, including cable splicing as an example. The certification process in most cases entails three levels of competency:

  • An experience requirement
  • Passing a written exam
  • Passing a practical exam

Examples of certifying agencies include the National Joint Apprenticeship and Training Committee (NJATC) and also the National Institute for Certification in Engineering Technologies (NICET). It’s important that the electrician trade school that you pick not only delivers a strong academic foundation, but also helps prepare you for passing any licensing and certification examinations that you may need to take in the future.

Enrolling in Electrician Programs Online

Aurora KS student attending electrician school onlineAn option that you might have looked at is selecting an online electrician school to earn a certificate or degree. While online schools are becoming more accepted as a means of attending class without the need for travel, in this case they are not completely internet based. Just about all electrician training programs require some attendance on-campus to get practical hands-on training. But since the remainder of the classes can be accessed online, internet learning might be a more accommodating option for individuals that have minimal time for schooling. And as an added benefit many online training programs have a reduced tuition cost compared to their on campus alternatives. Travelling expenses from Aurora KS are also reduced and some of the study materials can be available on line as well. All of these benefits can make electrician online trade schools more affordable and convenient. And a number are fully accredited, which we will deal with in our questions to ask checklist.

Things to Ask Electrician Training Schools

Questions to ask Aurora KS electrician schoolsWhen you have decided to obtain a diploma, certificate or degree, you can start to refine your school options. Because there are so many electrician trade and vocational schools in the Aurora KS region, it’s essential to have a checklist of qualifications that each school must satisfy. The initial two that we discussed were location and tuition expense. If you have an interest in earning an online degree, then that needs to be an option that your final school offers. And although all three qualifiers may be important when making your determination, there are other factors that must be considered as well. Following is a checklist of those added qualifiers that you will need to analyze prior to enrolling in an electrical trade school.

Accreditation.  A large number of electrician vocational schools have attained either a regional or a national accreditation. They may acquire Institutional Accreditation, which focuses on the school’s programs overall, or Programmatic Accreditation, which pertains to an individual program, such as electrical technology. Verify that the Aurora KS program is accredited by a U.S. Department of Education approved accrediting organization, for instance the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology. In addition to helping ensure that you obtain an excellent education, it can help in acquiring financial aid or student loans, which are frequently unavailable for non-accredited schools. Also, some states mandate that the electrician training program be accredited in order to qualify for licensing.

High Completion and Placement Rates.  Ask the electrician training programs you are looking at what their completion rates are. The completion rate is the portion or percentage of students who enroll in and finish the course. A low completion rate may suggest that students were disappointed with the course and dropped out. It could also mean that the instructors were not competent to instruct the students. It’s similarly essential that the schools have higher job placement rates. Older and/or more reputable schools may have a broader directory of graduates, which may produce more contacts for the school to employ for their apprenticeship and job placement programs. A high job placement rate will not only affirm that the school has a good reputation within the field, but also that it has the network of contacts to help Aurora KS students obtain apprenticeships or employment.

Apprenticeship Programs.  Numerous electrician trade programs are taught along with an apprenticeship or an internship program. Those participating trade and technical programs will help place you in an apprenticeship program within their network of electrical companies or labor unions. Ask if the schools you are reviewing have referring partnerships with Aurora KS area electricians or electrical professionals. An apprenticeship not only offers a valuable experience by providing practical training, but it also supplies employment opportunities and helps to build relationships in the regional electrician professional community.

Modern Facilities.  Make sure that the school facilities and the tools that you will be trained on are up-to-date and what you will be working with in the field. If you are already in an internship or an apprenticeship, check with the electrical tech you are working with concerning what you should be expecting. If not, ask a local Aurora KS electrical contractor if they can give you some pointers. Additionally keep in mind that unless you are able to relocate, the school needs to be within commuting distance of your Aurora home. Take note that if you decide to enroll in an out-of-state school, in addition to relocation costs there may be increased tuition fees compared to in-state residents.

Smaller Classes.   It’s desirable that you receive as much individualized training as possible, which can be difficult in bigger classes. Ask if you can sit in on a few of the classes so that you can observe how large they are and experience the interaction between teachers and students. Talk to some of the students and get their comments relating to class sizes and instruction. Last, speak with some of the instructors and learn what their level of experience is and what degrees or certifications they hold.

Flexible Scheduling.  Verify that the class schedules for the schools you are assessing are flexible enough to fulfill your needs. If you can only go to classes in the evening or on weekends near Aurora KS, confirm that the schools you are reviewing offer those choices. If you can only attend on a part-time basis, make sure that the school you select allows part-time enrollment. Finally, ask what the policy is to make-up classes should you miss any due to work, illness or family emergencies.

But as we have discussed in this article, there are several factors that you will need to assess and compare between the training programs you are considering. It’s a necessity that any electrical tech school that you are examining includes a lot of hands-on training. Classes should be smaller in size and each student must have their own equipment to train with. Classroom education needs to provide a real-world context, and the curriculum should be current and conform with industry standards. Training programs differ in length and the type of credential offered, so you will have to decide what length of program and certificate or degree will best serve your needs. Every training program offers different possibilities for certification also. Perhaps the best means to research your final list of schools is to check out each campus and talk with the students and faculty. Invest some time to monitor some classes.
