Electrician Diploma, Certificate and Degree Programs

Bendena KS electrician on power line poleThere are multiple options to get electrician training in a trade or technical school near Bendena KS. You may choose a certificate or diploma program, or obtain an Associate Degree. Bachelor’s Degrees are available at certain schools, but are not as prevalent as the first three alternatives. Often these programs are made available together with an apprenticeship, which are required by most states to be licensed or if you intend to earn certification. Bellow are short descriptions of the three most prevalent programs available.

  • Diploma and Certificate Programs are typically offered by Kansas technical and trade schools and require about a year to complete. They provide a solid foundation and are geared towards individuals who wish to enter an apprenticeship more quickly as a journeyman electrician.
  • Associate Degrees require 2 years to finish and are offered by Kansas junior or community colleges, commonly as an Associate Degree in Electrical Technology. They provide a more extensive education while supplying the foundation that prepares students to begin their apprenticeship program.

As earlier mentioned, Bachelor’s Degree programs are accessible at some Kansas institutions, but are less popular at four years than the other briefer programs. The majority of states mandate that an apprenticeship of at least 2 years and in most cases 4 years be carried out before licensing. Therefore, many students are anxious to start their paid apprenticeship, especially if it’s not part of their educational program.

The length of apprenticeship varies by state, but commonly about 4 to 5 years of prior experience is needed in order to take the licensing exam. The exams typically assess general knowledge and electrical theory, in addition to knowledge of the National Electrical Code (NEC). Obtaining certification is also an optional way for an electrician to identify her or himself as a skilled and experienced professional. The certifications offered vary by state and can be obtained in numerous specialties, such as cable splicing as an example. The certification procedure usually involves three levels of proficiency:

  • An experience requirement
  • Passing a written exam
  • Passing a practical exam

Examples of certifying organizations include the National Joint Apprenticeship and Training Committee (NJATC) along with the National Institute for Certification in Engineering Technologies (NICET). It’s imperative that the electrician vocational school that you select not only provides a strong educational foundation, but also helps prepare you for passing any certification and licensing exams that you might be required to take in the future.

Also keep in mind that unless you are willing to move, the school needs to be within commuting distance of your Bendena residence. Talk with a few of the students and get their comments concerning class sizes and instruction. Last, talk to some of the instructors and learn what their level of experience is and what degrees or certifications they hold.

    Bendena, Kansas

Bendena is an unincorporated community and census-designated place (CDP) in Doniphan County, Kansas, United States.[1] As of the 2010 census, Bendena had a population of 117.[2] Its ZIP Code is 66008.[3]

Bendena was founded in 1886.[4] It was originally given the name of "Albers," after John Albers, who farmed on this land. But when the United States Postal Service established a post office there, they required a change of name because of similarities to other town names in Kansas. It was then named for the sweetheart of the first telegraph operator at the Chicago, Kansas and Nebraska railroad station.[5]
