Electrician Degree, Diploma and Certificate Options

Little River KS electrician on power line poleThere are multiple approaches to get electrician instruction in a vocational or trade school near Little River KS. You can select a diploma or certificate program, or earn an Associate Degree. Bachelor’s Degrees are obtainable at certain schools, but are not as common as the other three options. In many cases these programs are offered combined with an apprenticeship, which are required by the majority of states to be licensed or if you would like to become certified. Bellow are short descriptions of the 3 most common programs offered.

  • Diploma and Certificate Programs are generally provided by Kansas technical and trade schools and take about a year to finish. They provide a good foundation and are geared towards individuals who want to get into an apprenticeship more quickly as a journeyman electrician.
  • Associate Degree Programs require 2 years to finish and are provided by Kansas community colleges, typically as an Associate Degree in Electrical Technology. They furnish a more well-rounded education while supplying the foundation that prepares students to begin their apprenticeship program.

As previously stated, Bachelor’s Degrees are offered at certain Kansas institutions, but are less favored at four years than the other shorter programs. Many states require that an apprenticeship of no less than 2 years and more typically four years be carried out prior to licensing. Therefore, many students are anxious to start their paid apprenticeship, especially if it’s not a component of their educational program.

Electrician License and Certification Prerequisites

After finishing an apprenticeship, journeyman electricians are mandated to become licensed in the majority of states or municipalities. The period of apprenticeship varies by state, but usually around four to five years of prior experience is required before taking the licensing examination. The exams typically assess electrical theory and general knowledge, in addition to knowledge of the National Electrical Code (NEC). Obtaining certification is also a voluntary method for an electrician to distinguish her or himself as a experienced and skilled professional. The certifications available vary by state and may be acquired in numerous specialties, including cable splicing as an example. The certification process in most cases entails three levels of competency:

  • An experience requirement
  • Passing a written exam
  • Passing a practical exam

Examples of certifying organizations include the National Joint Apprenticeship and Training Committee (NJATC) as well as the National Institute for Certification in Engineering Technologies (NICET). It’s imperative that the electrician vocational school that you enroll in not only delivers a strong educational foundation, but also helps prep you for passing any certification and licensing exams that you may be required to pass in the future.

Additionally keep in mind that unless you are able to move, the school needs to be within commuting distance of your Little River residence. Remember that if you decide to enroll in an out-of-state school, besides the added moving costs there may be higher tuition fees compared to in-state residents.

Ask if you can sit in on a couple of the classes so that you can observe how large they are and experience the interaction between teachers and students. Speak to some of the students and get their feedback regarding class sizes and instruction. Finally, talk with a few of the teachers and find out what their level of experience is and what degrees or certifications they have earned.
