Electrician Certificate, Diploma and Degree Options

Mankato KS electrician on power line poleThere are three general ways to obtain electrician instruction in a trade or technical school near Mankato KS. You may enroll in a certificate or diploma program, or receive an Associate Degree. Bachelor’s Degrees are offered at certain schools, but are not as prevalent as the other three alternatives. In many cases these programs are made available in conjunction with an apprenticeship program, which are required by the majority of states to become licensed or if you intend to earn certification. Following are brief summaries of the 3 most common programs offered.

  • Diploma and Certificate Programs are generally provided by Kansas vocational and trade schools and take about a year to finish. They provide a solid foundation and are geared towards those who would like to join an apprenticeship more quickly as a journeyman electrician.
  • Associate Degrees take 2 years to finish and are provided by Kansas junior or community colleges, usually as an Associate Degree in Electrical Technology. They furnish a more extensive education while providing the foundation that readies students to begin their apprenticeship program.

As earlier mentioned, Bachelor’s Degrees are accessible at some Kansas colleges, but are less favored at 4 years than the other shorter programs. The majority of states require that an apprenticeship of no less than 2 years and in most cases 4 years be completed before licensing. Therefore, most students are anxious to start their paid apprenticeship, especially if it’s not a component of their academic program.
