Princeton KS electrician working on circuit boardThe initial step to becoming an electrical tradesman or contractor is locating an electrician trade school near Princeton KS. But with so many vocational schools to select from, just how do you tackle making certain that you enroll in the best one? Especially because there are so many variables to evaluate. For example, many prospective students will start by searching for schools that are close to their residence. After they have identified a few that are within commuting range, they will select the one with the most affordable tuition. Although cost and location are of importance, they are not the sole factors that should be examined. Also important are the accreditation and reputations of the schools, as well as their graduation and job placement rates. These and other qualifiers should contribute toward your final judgment when picking an electrician training school. We will talk about that checklist in greater detail later in this post. But first, let’s review a little bit about becoming an electrician and the educational options that are accessible.

Electrician Degree, Certificate and Diploma Programs

Princeton KS electrician on power line poleThere are several ways to obtain electrician instruction in a trade or technical school near Princeton KS. You may select a diploma or certificate program, or receive an Associate Degree. Bachelor’s Degrees are offered at a few schools, but are not as prevalent as the first three alternatives. Frequently these programs are made available together with an apprenticeship program, which are required by the majority of states in order to become licensed or if you want to earn certification. Bellow are short summaries of the three most prevalent programs offered.

  • Certificate and Diploma Programs are typically offered by Kansas trade and technical schools and take about a year to finish. They furnish a solid foundation and are geared towards students who wish to join an apprenticeship more quickly as a journeyman electrician.
  • Associate Degree Programs involve two years to complete and are provided by Kansas community colleges, commonly as an Associate Degree in Electrical Technology. They furnish a more well-rounded education while supplying the foundation that readies students to begin their apprenticeship program.

As earlier stated, Bachelor’s Degree programs are available at certain Kansas colleges, but are less popular at 4 years than the other briefer programs. The majority of states require that an apprenticeship of at least 2 years and more typically four years be performed prior to licensing. Therefore, many students are eager to start their paid apprenticeship, especially if it’s not part of their academic program.

Electrician Licensing and Certification Prerequisites

Princeton KS electrician wiring boxElectricians in Princeton KS can perform a vast array of services, such as testing, installing and replacing electrical systems, and ensuring that the wiring in buildings and homes comply with code standards. After completing an apprenticeship, journeyman electricians are required to be licensed in the majority of municipalities and states. The length of apprenticeship differs by state, but generally around four to five years of practical experience is needed before taking the licensing examination. The exams commonly assess electrical theory and general knowledge, along with understanding of the National Electrical Code (NEC). Receiving certification is also a voluntary way for an electrician to distinguish him or herself as a experienced and skilled professional. The certifications available vary by state and may be earned in many specialties, such as cable splicing as an example. The certification process usually involves 3 levels of proficiency:

  • An experience requirement
  • Passing a written exam
  • Passing a practical exam

Examples of certifying agencies include the National Joint Apprenticeship and Training Committee (NJATC) as well as the National Institute for Certification in Engineering Technologies (NICET). It’s crucial that the electrician tech school that you enroll in not only provides a solid educational foundation, but also helps ready you for passing any licensing and certification examinations that you may be required to pass in the future.

Attending Electrician Training Classes Online

Princeton KS student attending electrician school onlineAn alternative that you might have looked at is selecting an online electrician program to earn a certificate or degree. Even though online training programs are becoming more popular as a means of attending class without the need for travel, in this case they are not totally internet based. Pretty much all electrician training programs require some attendance on-campus to obtain hands-on practical training. But since the rest of the classes can be attended online, distance learning may be a more accommodating alternative for students that have limited time for schooling. And as an added benefit numerous online degree programs have a reduced tuition cost compared to their traditional competitors. Driving expenses from Princeton KS are also reduced and some of the study materials may be accessed on line as well. Each of these advantages can make electrician online trade schools more economical and accessible. And a number are fully accredited, which we will address in our due diligence checklist.

Points to Ask Electrician Training Schools

Questions to ask Princeton KS electrician schoolsWhen you have decided to earn a certificate, diploma or degree, you can begin to narrow down your training options. Considering that there are so many electrician tech and trade schools in the Princeton KS region, it’s important to have a checklist of criteria that each school must meet. The initial 2 that we mentioned were location and the cost of tuition. If you have an interest in earning an online degree, then that must be an option that your final school offers. And while all three qualifiers may be critical when making your determination, there are other factors that need to be taken into account as well. Below is a checklist of those added qualifiers that you will need to assess prior to choosing an electrical vocational school.

Accreditation.  A large number of electrician technical programs have attained either a regional or a national accreditation. They may receive Institutional Accreditation, which involves the school’s programs overall, or Programmatic Accreditation, which relates to an individual program, for instance electrical technology. Make sure that the Princeton KS school and program are accredited by a U.S. Department of Education acknowledged accrediting organization, such as the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology. In addition to helping make certain that you obtain a quality education, it can help in securing financial assistance or student loans, which are frequently unavailable for non-accredited schools. Furthermore, a number of states require that the electrician training program be accredited for it to be approved for licensing.

High Completion and Placement Rates.  Ask the electrician training programs you are reviewing what their completion rates are. The completion rate is the percentage of students who enroll in and finish the program. A lower completion rate may indicate that students were unhappy with the program and quit. It may also indicate that the instructors were not competent to instruct the students. It’s similarly important that the schools have high job placement rates. Older and/or more reputable schools may have a broader list of graduates, which can result in more contacts for the school to employ for their apprenticeship and job placement programs. A high job placement rate can not only confirm that the school has a good reputation within the trade, but additionally that it has the network of contacts to assist Princeton KS graduates acquire apprenticeships or employment.

Apprenticeship Programs.  Many electrician vocational programs are taught together with an apprenticeship or an internship program. Those participating technical and vocational schools will help place you in an apprenticeship program within their network of electrician contractors or labor unions. Check if the schools you are considering have working relationships with Princeton KS area electricians or electrical professionals. An apprenticeship not only offers a rewarding experience by furnishing hands-on training, but it also furnishes employment opportunities and helps to establish relationships in the regional electrician professional community.

Modern Facilities.  Confirm that the campus facilities and the tools that you will be trained on are up-to-date and what you will be working with in the field. If you are currently in an internship or an apprenticeship, talk to the electrical specialist you are working with regarding what you should be expecting. Otherwise, ask a local Princeton KS electrical contractor if they can give you some suggestions. Additionally bear in mind that unless you can relocate, the school needs to be within driving distance of your Princeton home. Take note that if you decide to attend an out-of-state school, besides the added moving costs there can be higher tuition fees compared to in-state residents.

Smaller Classes.   It’s important that you receive as much one-on-one training as possible, which can be challenging in larger classes. Ask if you can monitor a few of the classes so that you can observe how large they are and witness first hand the interaction between students and teachers. Talk with several of the students and get their feedback concerning class sizes and instruction. Last, talk to a few of the instructors and find out what their level of expertise is and what certifications or degrees they have earned.

Flexible Scheduling.  Confirm that the class schedules for the schools you are assessing are flexible enough to fulfill your needs. If you are only able to attend classes in the evening or on weekends near Princeton KS, verify that the schools you are comparing provide those choices. If you can only attend part-time, make sure that the school you select permits part-time enrollment. Additionally, ask what the protocol is to make-up classes should you miss any because of work, sickness or family emergencies.
