Arnaudville LA electrician working on circuit boardThe first step to becoming an electrical contractor or tradesman is finding an electrician trade school near Arnaudville LA. But with numerous vocational schools to select from, just how do you go about making certain that you enroll in the right one? Particularly since there are a number of factors to examine. For example, many students will begin by looking for schools that are close to their home. Once they have located several that are within commuting range, they will decide on the one with the cheapest tuition. Even though cost and location are of importance, they are not the sole factors that must be evaluated. Also important are the reputations of the schools, their accreditation, as well as their job placement and graduation rates. These and additional qualifications should influence your ultimate decision when picking an electrician school. We will talk about that checklist in greater detail later in this post. But to begin with, let’s review a little bit about becoming an electrician and the instructional choices that are available.

Electrician Certificate, Diploma and Degree Programs

Arnaudville LA electrician on power line poleThere are three general ways to obtain electrician instruction in a trade or technical school near Arnaudville LA. You may choose a certificate or diploma program, or obtain an Associate Degree. Bachelor’s Degrees are offered at some schools, but are not as common as the other three alternatives. Frequently these programs are offered together with an apprenticeship, which are mandated by the majority of states to become licensed or if you intend to become certified. Following are short explanations of the three most typical programs available.

  • Certificate and Diploma Programs are typically offered by Louisiana technical and trade schools and take about a year to complete. They provide a solid foundation and are geared towards students who would like to join an apprenticeship faster as a journeyman electrician.
  • Associate Degree Programs involve 2 years to complete and are offered by Louisiana junior or community colleges, commonly as an Associate Degree in Electrical Technology. They furnish a more well-rounded education while supplying the foundation that prepares students to enter into their apprenticeship program.

As earlier mentioned, Bachelor’s Degree programs are accessible at some Louisiana colleges, but are less popular at 4 years than the other briefer programs. Most states require that an apprenticeship of no less than 2 years and in most cases four years be performed prior to licensing. For that reason, many students are anxious to begin their paid apprenticeship, especially if it’s not part of their educational program.

Electrician Certification and Licensing Guidelines

Arnaudville LA electrician wiring boxElectricians in Arnaudville LA can perform a wide range of services, including testing, installing and replacing electrical systems, and ensuring that the wiring in houses and buildings comply with code standards. After concluding an apprenticeship, journeyman electricians are mandated to become licensed in the majority of municipalities and states. The duration of apprenticeship varies by state, but usually around four to five years of practical experience is called for in order to take the licensing examination. The exams usually assess electrical theory and general knowledge, in addition to understanding of the National Electrical Code (NEC). Obtaining certification is also an optional means for an electrician to distinguish him or herself as a experienced and skilled professional. The certifications offered differ by state and can be obtained in numerous specialties, including cable splicing as an example. The certification process in most cases entails three levels of proficiency:

  • An experience requirement
  • Passing a written exam
  • Passing a practical exam

Examples of certifying organizations include the National Joint Apprenticeship and Training Committee (NJATC) along with the National Institute for Certification in Engineering Technologies (NICET). It’s important that the electrician vocational school that you pick not only delivers a solid educational foundation, but also helps prepare you for passing any licensing and certification examinations that you may be required to pass in the future.

Enrolling in Electrician Training Classes Online

Arnaudville LA student attending electrician school onlineAn option that you might have considered is enrolling in an online electrician program to earn a certificate or degree. While online schools have become more accepted as a means of attending class without the need for travel, in this case they are not entirely internet based. Virtually all electrician schools require some attendance on-campus to obtain practical hands-on training. But since the rest of the classes can be accessed online, distance learning may be a more convenient option for students that have minimal time for schooling. And as a bonus many online schools have a reduced tuition cost compared to their on-campus counterparts. Commuting expenses from Arnaudville LA are also minimized and a portion of the study materials may be accessed online as well. Each of these advantages can make online electrician trade schools more economical and convenient. And a number are fully accredited, which we will cover in our questions to ask checklist.

Questions to Ask Electrician Training Schools

Questions to ask Arnaudville LA electrician schoolsOnce you have made a decision to obtain a certificate, diploma or degree, you can start to refine your training options. Considering that there are numerous electrician tech and trade schools in the Arnaudville LA area, it’s imperative to have a checklist of qualifications that each school must satisfy. The initial 2 that we discussed were location and tuition expense. If you are interested in earning an degree online, then that needs to be a feature that your final school offers. And although all three qualifiers may be important when making your decision, there are other factors that must be taken into account as well. Following is a checklist of those additional qualifiers that you will need to assess before selecting an electrical technical school.

Accreditation.  A large number of electrician vocational programs have received either a regional or a national accreditation. They may attain Institutional Accreditation, which focuses on the school’s programs overall, or Programmatic Accreditation, which pertains to a specific program, for example electrical technology. Make certain that the Arnaudville LA school and program are accredited by a U.S. Department of Education acknowledged accrediting organization, for example the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology. In addition to helping make certain that you get a quality education, it may help in obtaining financial assistance or student loans, which are frequently unavailable for non-accredited schools. Additionally, many states require that the electrician training program be accredited for it to qualify for licensing.

High Completion and Placement Rates.  Ask the electrician schools you are considering what their completion rates are. The completion rate is the percentage of students who enroll in and complete the course. A lower completion rate could suggest that students were dissatisfied with the program and dropped out. It could also indicate that the instructors were not qualified to instruct the students. It’s also important that the schools have high job placement rates. Older and/or more reputable schools may have a broader directory of alumni, which may produce more contacts for the school to employ for their apprenticeship and job placement programs. A high job placement rate will not only affirm that the school has an excellent reputation within the industry, but also that it has the network of contacts to help Arnaudville LA students obtain apprenticeships or jobs.

Apprenticeship Programs.  Numerous electrician trade programs are taught in conjunction with an internship or an apprenticeship program. Those participating vocational and trade programs will help place you in an apprenticeship program inside their network of electrical companies or trade unions. Find out if the schools you are considering have working relationships with Arnaudville LA area electricians or electrical companies. An apprenticeship not only offers a rewarding experience by supplying practical training, but it also provides job opportunities and helps to form relationships in the regional electrician professional community.

Modern Facilities.  Confirm that the school facilities and the equipment that you will be instructed on are up-to-date and what you will be using on the job. If you are already in an internship or an apprenticeship, check with the electrical technician you are working under regarding what you should be looking for. Otherwise, ask a local Arnaudville LA electrical company if they can give you some tips. Also bear in mind that unless you are able to move, the school must be within driving distance of your Arnaudville home. Remember that if you decide to attend an out-of-state school, besides the added moving costs there can be increased tuition fees compared to in-state residents.

Smaller Classes.   It’s desirable that you get as much one-on-one instruction as possible, which can be challenging in larger classes. Ask if you can sit in on a few of the classes so that you can see how large they are and experience the interaction between teachers and students. Speak with several of the students and get their feedback relating to class sizes and instruction. Finally, speak to a few of the teachers and find out what their level of expertise is and what certifications or degrees they have earned.

Flexible Scheduling.  Make sure that the class schedules for the schools you are reviewing are flexible enough to meet your needs. If you are only able to attend classes in the evening or on weekends near Arnaudville LA, verify that the programs you are comparing provide those options. If you can only attend part-time, make sure that the school you select allows part-time enrollment. Finally, find out what the protocol is to make-up classes should you miss any because of work, illness or family emergencies.

But as we have covered in this article, there are several factors that you will need to assess and compare between the training programs you are considering. It’s a prerequisite that any electrical training program that you are considering includes a considerable amount of hands-on training. Classes should be small in size and each student should have their personal equipment to train with. Classroom education needs to provide a real-world frame of reference, and the curriculum should be up-to-date and in-line with industry standards. Courses differ in duration and the type of credential offered, so you will have to determine what length of program and degree or certificate will best fulfill your needs. Every training program offers unique possibilities for certification as well. Arnaudville, Louisiana

The St. Martin Parish portion of Arnaudville is part of the Lafayette Metropolitan Statistical Area, while the St. Landry Parish portion is part of the Opelousas–Eunice Micropolitan Statistical Area.

On the original site of an Attakapas Indian village, Arnaudville is one of the oldest remaining towns in St. Landry Parish. First called La Murière, it was later known as La Jonction which meant "The Junction" translated from French. By the 19th century, the town was named after the Brothers Arnaud, who had donated a large amount of land to the town to make a Church for whites and blacks (which still exists today). The Arnauds were the family in which the town got its final name from, many of whose descendants still live in the area. But the French had settled the town in the late 18th century.[4]

Arnaudville is on the Bayou Teche where the Teche crosses from St. Landry Parish into St. Martin Parish. The town is called "La Jonction" by its French-speaking citizens since Arnaudville is located at the junction of Bayou Teche and Bayou Fuselier.
