For example, many prospective students will start by searching for schools that are nearby their home. While location and cost are of importance, they are not the sole qualifications that must be evaluated. Also important are the accreditation and reputations of the schools, along with their graduation and job placement rates. Electrician Degree, Certificate and Diploma Programs

Crowley LA electrician on power line poleThere are three general ways to receive electrician training in a technical or vocational school near Crowley LA. You can select a certificate or diploma program, or obtain an Associate Degree. Bachelor’s Degrees are offered at certain schools, but are not as prevalent as the first three alternatives. Frequently these programs are offered in conjunction with an apprenticeship program, which are required by most states to become licensed or if you intend to become certified. Following are brief descriptions of the 3 most typical programs available.

  • Certificate and Diploma Programs are generally provided by Louisiana trade and technical schools and take approximately a year to complete. They furnish a good foundation and are aimed towards individuals who wish to enter an apprenticeship more quickly as a journeyman electrician.
  • Associate Degrees take two years to complete and are provided by Louisiana community colleges, usually as an Associate Degree in Electrical Technology. They provide a more comprehensive education while supplying the foundation that readies students to begin their apprenticeship program.

As earlier stated, Bachelor’s Degree programs are offered at certain Louisiana colleges, but are less preferred at 4 years than the other briefer programs. Many states mandate that an apprenticeship of no less than 2 years and more typically four years be completed prior to licensing. Therefore, most students are anxious to begin their paid apprenticeship, particularly if it’s not a component of their educational program.

Electrician Certification and Licensing Requirements

Crowley LA electrician wiring boxElectricians in Crowley LA can perform a wide range of tasks, such as installing, replacing and testing electrical systems, and making sure that the wiring in houses and buildings are up to code standards. After completing an apprenticeship, journeyman electricians are required to become licensed in most states or municipalities. The length of apprenticeship differs by state, but commonly around four to five years of prior experience is required in order to take the licensing examination. The exams usually evaluate electrical theory and general knowledge, in addition to understanding of the National Electrical Code (NEC). Obtaining certification is also an optional way for an electrician to distinguish him or herself as a experienced and skilled professional. The certifications offered vary by state and may be earned in several specializations, including cable splicing as an example. The certification process usually involves three levels of competency:

  • An experience requirement
  • Passing a written exam
  • Passing a practical exam

Examples of certifying agencies include the National Joint Apprenticeship and Training Committee (NJATC) and also the National Institute for Certification in Engineering Technologies (NICET). It’s crucial that the electrician trade school that you pick not only delivers a strong academic foundation, but also helps prep you for passing any certification and licensing examinations that you might need to pass in the future.

Enrolling in Electrician Programs Online

Crowley LA student attending electrician school onlineA possibility that you might have looked at is choosing an online electrician program to earn a certificate or degree. Although online training programs have become more accepted as a way of attending class without the need for travel, in this case they are not completely internet based. Pretty much all electrician training programs require some attendance on campus to get hands-on practical training. But since the rest of the classes can be accessed online, distance learning might be a more practical option for students that have minimal time for education. And as an added benefit numerous online schools have a reduced tuition cost compared to their traditional counterparts. Travelling costs from Crowley LA are also lessened and a portion of the study materials may be available on line also. Each of these benefits can make electrician online vocational schools more affordable and convenient. And many are fully accredited, which we will discuss in our questions to ask checklist.

Questions to Ask Electrician Vocational Schools

Questions to ask Crowley LA electrician schoolsNow that you have decided to obtain a diploma, certificate or degree, you can start to refine your training options. Because there are numerous electrician vocational and trade schools in the Crowley LA region, it’s imperative to have a checklist of criteria that each program must satisfy. The first 2 that we mentioned were location and tuition expense. If you are interested in earning an online degree, then that needs to be an option that your final school offers. And while all three qualifiers may be crucial when making your decision, there are other factors that need to be taken into account as well. Following is a checklist of those additional qualifications that you will need to assess prior to choosing an electrical technical school.

Accreditation.  Numerous electrician trade programs have received either a regional or a national accreditation. They can earn Institutional Accreditation, which focuses on the school’s programs overall, or Programmatic Accreditation, which relates to a specific program, for instance electrical technology. Verify that the Crowley LA program and school are accredited by a U.S. Department of Education recognized accrediting organization, for instance the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology. Along with helping make certain that you obtain a quality education, it may assist in acquiring financial aid or student loans, which are frequently not available for non-accredited programs. Furthermore, a number of states require that the electrician training course be accredited for it to qualify for licensing.

High Completion and Placement Rates.  Ask the electrician training programs you are looking at what their completion rates are. The completion rate is the portion or percentage of students who enroll in and finish the course. A low completion rate might suggest that students were dissatisfied with the program and quit. It might also mean that the instructors were not competent to train the students. It’s also imperative that the schools have higher job placement rates. Older and/or more reputable schools may have a broader list of graduates, which can mean more contacts for the school to utilize for their apprenticeship and job placement programs. A high job placement rate will not only affirm that the school has an excellent reputation within the trade, but also that it has the network of contacts to help Crowley LA graduates acquire apprenticeships or jobs.

Apprenticeship Programs.  Most electrician technical programs are taught together with an apprenticeship or an internship program. Those participating technical and vocational schools will help place you in an apprenticeship program inside their network of electrical businesses or trade unions. Ask if the schools you are comparing have referring relationships with Crowley LA area electricians or electrical professionals. An apprenticeship not only offers a valuable experience by supplying practical training, but it also furnishes job opportunities and helps to build relationships in the local electrician professional community.

Modern Facilities.  Make sure that the school facilities and the equipment that you will be trained on are up-to-date and what you will be using on the job. If you are presently in an internship or an apprenticeship, check with the electrical technician you are working with regarding what you should be expecting. If not, ask a local Crowley LA electrical company if they can give you some tips. Additionally keep in mind that unless you are willing to relocate, the school must be within commuting distance of your Crowley home. Take note that if you decide to enroll in an out-of-state school, besides the added moving costs there may be increased tuition charges compared to in-state residents.

Smaller Classes.   It’s desirable that you receive as much individualized training as possible, which can be difficult in bigger classes. Ask if you can monitor a few of the classes so that you can see how big they are and experience the interaction between students and teachers. Talk to several of the students and get their feedback relating to class sizes and instruction. Finally, talk to a few of the instructors and find out what their level of expertise is and what degrees or certifications they hold.

Flexible Scheduling.  Verify that the class schedules for the programs you are reviewing are flexible enough to fulfill your needs. If you can only attend classes in the evening or on weekends near Crowley LA, confirm that the schools you are reviewing provide those options. If you can only attend part-time, make certain that the school you select permits part-time enrollment. Finally, find out what the protocol is to make-up classes should you miss any because of work, illness or family issues.

Classes need to be small in size and each student must have their own equipment to train with. Classroom education needs to provide a real-world frame of reference, and the training program should be up-to-date and conform with industry standards. Training programs vary in length and the type of credential offered, so you will have to decide what length of program and certificate or degree will best satisfy your needs. Every training program provides unique possibilities for certification also.
