Electrician Degree, Certificate and Diploma Programs

Germfask MI electrician on power line poleThere are three general approaches to obtain electrician instruction in a vocational or trade school near Germfask MI. You may choose a certificate or diploma program, or earn an Associate Degree. Bachelor’s Degrees are obtainable at a few schools, but are not as prevalent as the first three alternatives. Frequently these programs are offered together with an apprenticeship program, which are required by most states to be licensed or if you wish to earn certification. Following are short explanations of the three most prevalent programs offered.

  • Diploma and Certificate Programs are typically offered by Michigan trade and technical schools and require about a year to finish. They provide a good foundation and are geared towards individuals who wish to join an apprenticeship faster as a journeyman electrician.
  • Associate Degrees involve 2 years to finish and are provided by Michigan junior or community colleges, usually as an Associate Degree in Electrical Technology. They provide a more extensive education while supplying the foundation that prepares students to enter into their apprenticeship program.

As earlier mentioned, Bachelor’s Degree programs are accessible at some Michigan colleges, but are less favored at 4 years than the other shorter programs. Many states require that an apprenticeship of at least 2 years and in most cases 4 years be completed before licensing. Because of that, many students are eager to begin their paid apprenticeship, especially if it’s not part of their academic program.

Electrician License and Certification Criteria

After concluding an apprenticeship, journeyman electricians are mandated to become licensed in the majority of states or municipalities. The length of apprenticeship varies by state, but typically around four to five years of prior experience is required in order to take the licensing examination. The exams usually evaluate general knowledge and electrical theory, as well as knowledge of the National Electrical Code (NEC). Receiving certification is also an optional method for an electrician to distinguish her or himself as a skilled and experienced professional. The certifications offered vary by state and may be obtained in numerous specializations, including cable splicing as an example. The certification process in most cases includes 3 levels of proficiency:

  • An experience requirement
  • Passing a written exam
  • Passing a practical exam

Examples of certifying agencies include the National Joint Apprenticeship and Training Committee (NJATC) as well as the National Institute for Certification in Engineering Technologies (NICET). It’s imperative that the electrician trade school that you select not only provides a solid educational foundation, but also helps prepare you for passing any licensing and certification exams that you might be required to take in the future.

Attending Electrician Training Classes Online

Germfask MI student attending electrician school onlineAn alternative that you might have contemplated is selecting an online electrician program to earn a degree or a certificate. Even though online training programs have become more accepted as a way of attending class without the need for travel, in this case they are not entirely internet based. Virtually all electrician schools require partial attendance on-campus to get practical hands-on training. But since the remainder of the classes can be attended online, internet learning may be a more practical option for students that have minimal time for education. And as a bonus many online schools have a lower tuition cost compared to their on-campus counterparts. Driving costs from Germfask MI are also lessened and a portion of the study materials can be available online as well. Each of these advantages can make electrician online tech schools more affordable and convenient. And many are fully accredited, which we will deal with in our due diligence checklist.

Things to Ask Electrician Vocational Schools

Questions to ask Germfask MI electrician schoolsNow that you have decided to obtain a certificate, diploma or degree, you can begin to refine your training options. Since there are numerous electrician tech and trade schools in the Germfask MI area, it’s essential to have a checklist of qualifications that each school must meet. The first 2 that we mentioned were location and the cost of tuition. If you have an interest in earning an degree online, then that must be a feature that your final school offers. And although all three qualifiers may be important when making your determination, there are other variables that need to be taken into account as well. Following is a checklist of those added qualifications that you will need to analyze before selecting an electrical tech school.

Accreditation.  Numerous electrician trade schools have earned either a regional or a national accreditation. They can attain Institutional Accreditation, which involves the school’s programs as a whole, or Programmatic Accreditation, which pertains to a specific program, for example electrical technology. Verify that the Germfask MI school and program are accredited by a U.S. Department of Education acknowledged accrediting agency, for example the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology. In addition to helping make certain that you obtain a superior education, it can assist in acquiring financial aid or student loans, which are often not available for non-accredited programs. Additionally, many states require that the electrician training program be accredited in order to qualify for licensing.

High Completion and Placement Rates.  Ask the electrician schools you are looking at what their completion rates are. The completion rate is the percentage of students who enroll in and finish the program. A lower completion rate might indicate that students were unhappy with the program and dropped out. It could also mean that the teachers were not competent to train the students. It’s also essential that the schools have high job placement rates. Older and/or more reputable schools may have a more extensive list of graduates, which may result in more contacts for the school to utilize for their apprenticeship and job placement programs. A high job placement rate will not only confirm that the school has an excellent reputation within the field, but additionally that it has the network of contacts to help Germfask MI graduates obtain apprenticeships or jobs.

Apprenticeship Programs.  Numerous electrician training programs are taught along with an apprenticeship or an internship program. Those participating vocational and technical schools will help place you in an apprenticeship program within their network of electrical contractors or labor unions. Check if the schools you are comparing have working partnerships with Germfask MI area electricians or electrical professionals. An apprenticeship not only provides a valuable experience by providing practical training, but it also supplies job opportunities and helps to form relationships in the regional electrician professional community.

Modern Facilities.  Make certain that the campus facilities and the tools that you will be instructed on are up-to-date and what you will be using in the field. If you are currently in an internship or an apprenticeship, talk to the electrical technician you are working with concerning what you should be expecting. If not, ask a local Germfask MI electrical contractor if they can give you some pointers. Also bear in mind that unless you can move, the school needs to be within driving distance of your Germfask home. Take note that if you decide to enroll in an out-of-state school, besides the added moving costs there might be increased tuition charges compared to in-state residents.

Smaller Classes.   It’s desirable that you get as much one-on-one training as possible, which can be challenging in larger classes. Ask if you can monitor a few of the classes so that you can see how big they are and experience the interaction between students and instructors. Talk to several of the students and get their opinions concerning class sizes and instruction. Last, talk to some of the teachers and find out what their level of experience is and what degrees or certifications they have earned.

Flexible Scheduling.  Confirm that the class schedules for the schools you are evaluating are flexible enough to fulfill your needs. If you are only able to attend classes in the evening or on weekends near Germfask MI, verify that the programs you are reviewing offer those choices. If you can only attend on a part-time basis, make certain that the school you select offers part-time enrollment. Additionally, find out what the protocol is to make-up classes should you miss any because of work, sickness or family emergencies.
