Electrician Degree, Diploma and Certificate Options

Nadeau MI electrician on power line poleThere are several ways to obtain electrician training in a vocational or trade school near Nadeau MI. You can select a certificate or diploma program, or earn an Associate Degree. Bachelor’s Degrees are offered at some schools, but are not as common as the other three options. In many cases these programs are made available in conjunction with an apprenticeship program, which are mandated by most states in order to become licensed or if you wish to earn certification. Bellow are short descriptions of the 3 most typical programs offered.

  • Certificate and Diploma Programs are generally offered by Michigan trade and technical schools and require approximately a year to finish. They provide a solid foundation and are aimed towards those who would like to enter an apprenticeship faster as a journeyman electrician.
  • Associate Degrees take two years to complete and are provided by Michigan junior or community colleges, commonly as an Associate Degree in Electrical Technology. They provide a more extensive education while providing the foundation that prepares students to enter into their apprenticeship program.

As previously mentioned, Bachelor’s Degree programs are available at certain Michigan institutions, but are less favored at 4 years than the other briefer programs. The majority of states mandate that an apprenticeship of no less than 2 years and in most cases 4 years be completed prior to licensing. Therefore, most students are eager to commence their paid apprenticeship, particularly if it’s not part of their educational program.

Obtaining certification is also an optional means for an electrician to identify her or himself as a skilled and experienced professional. The certifications offered differ by state and can be earned in many specializations, such as cable splicing as an example. The certification process usually includes 3 levels of proficiency:

  • An experience requirement
  • Passing a written exam
  • Passing a practical exam

Examples of certifying organizations include the National Joint Apprenticeship and Training Committee (NJATC) as well as the National Institute for Certification in Engineering Technologies (NICET).
