Electrician Degree, Certificate and Diploma Options

Chatfield MN electrician on power line poleThere are multiple options to get electrician training in a vocational or trade school near Chatfield MN. You can enroll in a certificate or diploma program, or receive an Associate Degree. Bachelor’s Degrees are offered at a few schools, but are not as prevalent as the first three alternatives. Frequently these programs are made available combined with an apprenticeship, which are required by the majority of states to become licensed or if you wish to earn certification. Following are brief explanations of the three most prevalent programs available.

  • Diploma and Certificate Programs are typically offered by Minnesota trade and technical schools and take about a year to finish. They provide a good foundation and are geared towards those who want to enter an apprenticeship faster as a journeyman electrician.
  • Associate Degrees take two years to finish and are provided by Minnesota junior or community colleges, usually as an Associate Degree in Electrical Technology. They offer a more comprehensive education while supplying the foundation that readies students to begin their apprenticeship program.

As previously stated, Bachelor’s Degree programs are accessible at some Minnesota institutions, but are less favored at four years than the other shorter programs. Many states mandate that an apprenticeship of at least 2 years and in most cases 4 years be performed prior to licensing. Because of that, many students are anxious to start their paid apprenticeship, particularly if it’s not part of their academic program.

Electrician Certification and Licensing Prerequisites

After completing an apprenticeship, journeyman electricians are required to be licensed in the majority of municipalities and states. The length of apprenticeship differs by state, but normally about four to five years of prior experience is called for in order to take the licensing examination. The exams typically test general knowledge and electrical theory, as well as knowledge of the National Electrical Code (NEC). Receiving certification is also a voluntary method for an electrician to identify her or himself as a experienced and skilled professional. The certifications offered differ by state and can be acquired in numerous specialties, including cable splicing as an example. The certification procedure in most cases includes three levels of proficiency:

  • An experience requirement
  • Passing a written exam
  • Passing a practical exam

Examples of certifying organizations include the National Joint Apprenticeship and Training Committee (NJATC) along with the National Institute for Certification in Engineering Technologies (NICET). It’s important that the electrician vocational school that you choose not only furnishes a strong academic foundation, but also helps prepare you for passing any certification and licensing examinations that you might be required to pass in the future.

But since the balance of the classes can be attended online, distance learning may be a more accommodating choice for individuals that have limited time for schooling. And as an added benefit numerous online degree programs have a cheaper tuition cost compared to their on-campus alternatives. Driving costs from Chatfield MN are also minimized and some of the study materials may be accessed on line as well. Each of these advantages can make electrician online tech schools more affordable and convenient. And a number are fully accredited, which we will cover in our due diligence checklist.

Things to Ask Electrician Trade Schools

Questions to ask Chatfield MN electrician schoolsOnce you have made a decision to earn a certificate, diploma or degree, you can start to narrow down your training options. Because there are numerous electrician tech and trade schools in the Chatfield MN area, it’s imperative to have a checklist of criteria that each school must satisfy. The first two that we talked about were location and tuition expense. If you have an interest in earning an degree online, then that needs to be an option that your chosen school offers. And even though all three qualifiers may be crucial when making your selection, there are other factors that need to be considered also. Below is a checklist of those added qualifiers that you will need to research prior to choosing an electrical trade school.

Accreditation.  A large number of electrician trade programs have earned either a regional or a national accreditation. They can receive Institutional Accreditation, which involves the school’s programs overall, or Programmatic Accreditation, which pertains to an individual program, for example electrical technology. Verify that the Chatfield MN school is accredited by a U.S. Department of Education acknowledged accrediting agency, for example the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology. In addition to helping guarantee that you get an excellent education, it may help in obtaining financial aid or student loans, which are frequently unavailable for non-accredited programs. Additionally, some states mandate that the electrician training course be accredited for it to qualify for licensing.

High Completion and Placement Rates.  Ask the electrician training programs you are reviewing what their completion rates are. The completion rate is the percentage or portion of students who enroll in and complete the program. A lower completion rate could indicate that students were disappointed with the program and dropped out. It may also signify that the teachers were not competent to train the students. It’s similarly imperative that the schools have high job placement rates. Older and/or more reputable schools may have a broader directory of graduates, which can mean more contacts for the school to use for their apprenticeship and job placement programs. A high job placement rate can not only validate that the school has an excellent reputation within the trade, but additionally that it has the network of contacts to help Chatfield MN graduates acquire apprenticeships or jobs.

Apprenticeship Programs.  A large number of electrician training programs are taught along with an internship or an apprenticeship program. Those participating technical and vocational programs will help place you in an apprenticeship program within their network of electrical companies or trade unions. Find out if the schools you are reviewing have referring partnerships with Chatfield MN area electricians or electrical professionals. An apprenticeship not only provides a valuable experience by providing hands-on training, but it also provides job opportunities and helps to form relationships in the area electrician professional community.

Modern Facilities.  Make sure that the school facilities and the equipment that you will be trained on are up-to-date and what you will be using on the job. If you are presently in an internship or an apprenticeship, consult with the electrical technician you are working with concerning what you should be looking for. Otherwise, ask a local Chatfield MN electrical company if they can provide some pointers. Also bear in mind that unless you can move, the school needs to be within commuting distance of your Chatfield residence. Take note that if you decide to attend an out-of-state school, in addition to relocation costs there can be increased tuition charges compared to in-state residents.

Smaller Classes.   It’s important that you get as much one-on-one instruction as possible, which can be difficult in larger classes. Ask if you can monitor a few of the classes so that you can see how large they are and witness first hand the interaction between students and teachers. Talk to a few of the students and get their comments relating to class sizes and instruction. Finally, speak to a few of the teachers and find out what their level of experience is and what certifications or degrees they hold.

Flexible Scheduling.  Verify that the class schedules for the schools you are evaluating are flexible enough to fulfill your needs. If you can only attend classes in the evening or on weekends near Chatfield MN, check that the programs you are looking at provide those choices. If you can only attend part-time, make certain that the school you select offers part-time enrollment. Finally, check out what the policy is to make-up classes should you miss any due to work, illness or family emergencies.

Programs vary in length and the type of credential provided, so you will have to determine what length of program and certificate or degree will best serve your needs. Every training program offers different options for certification as well. Chatfield, Minnesota

Chatfield is a city in Fillmore and Olmsted counties in the U.S. state of Minnesota. The population was 2,779 at the 2010 census.[6] The city's area is split almost equally between the two counties. Chatfield is known as "The Gateway to Bluff Country" and "The Chosen Valley".

The city was named after Judge Andrew G. Chatfield.[7] It was founded in 1853 by Andrew Twiford, and originally served as the Fillmore county seat prior to the county being further divided. The founding population was overwhelmingly from New England. The New Englanders who founded Chatfield built a community that became so successful it was dubbed "the Chosen Valley".[8] During the American Civil War, the Chatfield Guards militia distinguished themselves as Company A of the 2nd Minnesota Volunteer Infantry, and their commander, former engineer and newspaperman Captain (later promoted to Colonel) Judson W. Bishop, later commanded the entire regiment.[9]

According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 2.64 square miles (6.84 km2).[10] It is also the home of the only stop light in Fillmore County, at the intersection of 3rd Street (Fillmore County Road 2) and Main Street. Chatfield has two waterways within its borders, the North Branch of the Root River and a tributary, Mill Creek.[11]
