Ellendale MN electrician working on circuit boardThe first step to learning to be an electrical contractor or tradesman is locating an electrician trade school near Ellendale MN. But with so many vocational schools to choose from, just how do you tackle making sure that you enroll in the ideal one? Especially because there are a number of variables to evaluate. For instance, some potential students will start by searching for schools that are close to their home. Once they have located some that are within driving distance, they will choose the one with the least expensive tuition. While cost and location are significant, they are not the only things that need to be examined. Also important are the reputations of the schools, their accreditation, in addition to their job placement and graduation rates. These and other qualifications should influence your final decision when choosing an electrician training school. We will talk about that checklist in more detail later in this post. But first, let’s talk a little bit about becoming an electrician and the training options that are accessible.

Electrician Degree, Certificate and Diploma Options

Ellendale MN electrician on power line poleThere are several options to get electrician training in a vocational or trade school near Ellendale MN. You can enroll in a certificate or diploma program, or obtain an Associate Degree. Bachelor’s Degrees are obtainable at some schools, but are not as prevalent as the other three alternatives. In many cases these programs are made available combined with an apprenticeship program, which are mandated by most states to become licensed or if you intend to earn certification. Following are brief descriptions of the three most common programs available.

  • Diploma and Certificate Programs are typically offered by Minnesota trade and technical schools and take approximately a year to complete. They provide a good foundation and are aimed towards individuals who wish to enter an apprenticeship faster as a journeyman electrician.
  • Associate Degrees involve 2 years to finish and are offered by Minnesota junior or community colleges, commonly as an Associate Degree in Electrical Technology. They furnish a more well-rounded education while supplying the foundation that readies students to join their apprenticeship program.

As earlier stated, Bachelor’s Degrees are offered at some Minnesota institutions, but are less popular at four years than the other shorter programs. The majority of states require that an apprenticeship of no less than 2 years and more typically four years be carried out before licensing. For that reason, the majority of students are anxious to start their paid apprenticeship, particularly if it’s not a component of their academic program.

Electrician Certification and Licensing Prerequisites

Ellendale MN electrician wiring boxElectricians in Ellendale MN can perform a multitude of services, including testing, installing and replacing electrical systems, and making sure that the wiring in houses and buildings are up to code standards. After concluding an apprenticeship, journeyman electricians are required to be licensed in the majority of municipalities and states. The duration of apprenticeship differs by state, but usually around four to five years of practical experience is called for before taking the licensing exam. The exams typically assess general knowledge and electrical theory, in addition to knowledge of the National Electrical Code (NEC). Receiving certification is also an optional means for an electrician to identify him or herself as a skilled and experienced professional. The certifications offered differ by state and may be obtained in various specializations, such as cable splicing as an example. The certification process in most cases involves 3 levels of competency:

  • An experience requirement
  • Passing a written exam
  • Passing a practical exam

Examples of certifying agencies include the National Joint Apprenticeship and Training Committee (NJATC) as well as the National Institute for Certification in Engineering Technologies (NICET). It’s crucial that the electrician vocational school that you choose not only provides a strong academic foundation, but also helps prep you for passing any licensing and certification exams that you may be required to pass in the future.

Attending Electrician Online Training Classes

Ellendale MN student attending electrician school onlineAn option that you may have contemplated is enrolling in an electrician online program to earn a certificate or degree. While online schools have become more accepted as a way of attending class without needing to travel, in this case they are not completely internet based. Pretty much all electrician schools require some attendance on-campus to receive hands-on practical training. But since the balance of the classes may be accessed online, internet learning may be a more accommodating alternative for individuals that have limited time for schooling. And as an added benefit many online degree programs have a cheaper tuition cost compared to their on campus counterparts. Commuting expenses from Ellendale MN are also lessened and a portion of the study materials can be accessed online as well. Each of these advantages can make online electrician trade schools more economical and accessible. And many are fully accredited, which we will cover in our questions to ask checklist.

Things to Ask Electrician Training Schools

Questions to ask Ellendale MN electrician schoolsNow that you have decided to earn a certificate, diploma or degree, you can start to focus your training options. Since there are numerous electrician trade and vocational schools in the Ellendale MN region, it’s important to have a checklist of criteria that each school must satisfy. The initial 2 that we mentioned were location and tuition expense. If you have an interest in earning an online degree, then that must be a feature that your final school offers. And although all three qualifiers may be critical when making your decision, there are additional factors that need to be considered as well. Following is a checklist of those added qualifications that you will need to assess prior to choosing an electrical tech school.

Accreditation.  Many electrician trade schools have earned either a regional or a national accreditation. They may receive Institutional Accreditation, which involves the school’s programs overall, or Programmatic Accreditation, which pertains to a specific program, such as electrical technology. Confirm that the Ellendale MN program is accredited by a U.S. Department of Education approved accrediting agency, which includes the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology. In addition to helping make certain that you receive a quality education, it may help in acquiring financial aid or student loans, which are often unavailable for non-accredited programs. Additionally, a number of states require that the electrician training course be accredited in order to be approved for licensing.

High Completion and Placement Rates.  Ask the electrician training programs you are considering what their completion rates are. The completion rate is the percentage of students who enroll in and finish the program. A lower completion rate might signify that students were dissatisfied with the program and quit. It may also mean that the teachers were not competent to instruct the students. It’s also important that the schools have high job placement rates. Older and/or more reputable schools may have a broader directory of graduates, which can produce more contacts for the school to use for their apprenticeship and job placement programs. A high job placement rate can not only confirm that the school has an excellent reputation within the industry, but also that it has the network of contacts to help Ellendale MN grads obtain apprenticeships or jobs.

Apprenticeship Programs.  Numerous electrician technical programs are taught along with an internship or an apprenticeship program. Those participating vocational and trade schools will help place you in an apprenticeship program inside their network of electrical businesses or trade unions. Find out if the schools you are comparing have working partnerships with Ellendale MN area electricians or electrical specialists. An apprenticeship not only offers a valuable experience by furnishing practical training, but it also furnishes employment opportunities and helps to establish relationships in the regional electrician professional community.

Modern Facilities.  Make sure that the campus facilities and the equipment that you will be instructed on are state-of-the-art and what you will be using on the job. If you are currently in an internship or an apprenticeship, consult with the electrical specialist you are working with regarding what you should be looking for. Otherwise, ask a local Ellendale MN electrical contracting company if they can give you some pointers. Additionally keep in mind that unless you are able to relocate, the school needs to be within commuting distance of your Ellendale residence. Take note that if you decide to enroll in an out-of-state school, in addition to relocation costs there can be higher tuition charges compared to in-state residents.

Smaller Classes.   It’s important that you get as much one-on-one instruction as possible, which can be difficult in larger classes. Ask if you can monitor a few of the classes so that you can see how big they are and witness first hand the interaction between instructors and students. Speak to a few of the students and get their comments concerning class sizes and instruction. Finally, speak with a few of the teachers and learn what their level of expertise is and what degrees or certifications they have earned.

Flexible Scheduling.  Confirm that the class schedules for the schools you are evaluating are flexible enough to meet your needs. If you can only go to classes in the evening or on weekends near Ellendale MN, verify that the schools you are looking at offer those options. If you can only attend part-time, make sure that the school you select permits part-time enrollment. Also, check out what the protocol is to make-up classes should you miss any due to work, illness or family emergencies.
