But with so many technical schools to pick from, just how do you approach making certain that you enroll in the right one? Particularly since there are so many points to evaluate. For example, some prospective students will start by looking for schools that are nearby their residence. Once they have found several that are within commuting range, they will pick the one with the least expensive tuition. Even though location and cost are important, they are not the only things that need to be examined. Also critical are the accreditation and reputations of the schools, in addition to their job placement and graduation rates. These and additional qualifiers should contribute toward your ultimate judgment when picking an electrician training school. We will discuss that checklist in greater detail later in this post. Electrician Diploma, Certificate and Degree Options

Fifty Lakes MN electrician on power line poleThere are three general approaches to receive electrician instruction in a trade or technical school near Fifty Lakes MN. You can select a certificate or diploma program, or obtain an Associate Degree. Bachelor’s Degrees are offered at a few schools, but are not as prevalent as the first three options. In many cases these programs are made available combined with an apprenticeship, which are required by most states to be licensed or if you would like to become certified. Bellow are brief summaries of the 3 most common programs offered.

  • Diploma and Certificate Programs are usually provided by Minnesota technical and trade schools and take about a year to complete. They provide a solid foundation and are aimed towards those who would like to join an apprenticeship more quickly as a journeyman electrician.
  • Associate Degree Programs involve 2 years to finish and are provided by Minnesota community colleges, commonly as an Associate Degree in Electrical Technology. They offer a more well-rounded education while providing the foundation that prepares students to join their apprenticeship program.

As earlier stated, Bachelor’s Degree programs are accessible at certain Minnesota institutions, but are less popular at four years than the other briefer programs. Many states require that an apprenticeship of at least 2 years and in most cases 4 years be completed prior to licensing. Because of that, the majority of students are eager to begin their paid apprenticeship, particularly if it’s not a component of their academic program.

Electrician License and Certification Criteria

Fifty Lakes MN electrician wiring boxElectricians in Fifty Lakes MN can undertake a vast array of tasks, such as testing, installing and replacing electrical systems, and making sure that the wiring in buildings and homes comply with code standards. After completing an apprenticeship, journeyman electricians are mandated to be licensed in the majority of municipalities and states. The duration of apprenticeship varies by state, but usually around 4 to 5 years of experience is needed in order to take the licensing examination. The exams typically evaluate electrical theory and general knowledge, in addition to knowledge of the National Electrical Code (NEC). Obtaining certification is also an optional method for an electrician to identify her or himself as a skilled and experienced professional. The certifications available differ by state and can be acquired in several specialties, including cable splicing as an example. The certification procedure in most cases involves three levels of proficiency:

  • An experience requirement
  • Passing a written exam
  • Passing a practical exam

Examples of certifying agencies include the National Joint Apprenticeship and Training Committee (NJATC) and also the National Institute for Certification in Engineering Technologies (NICET). It’s imperative that the electrician tech school that you enroll in not only provides a solid educational foundation, but also helps prep you for passing any certification and licensing examinations that you might be required to take in the future.

Attending Electrician Online Training Classes

Fifty Lakes MN student attending electrician school onlineAn option that you may have contemplated is enrolling in an online electrician program to earn a degree or a certificate. Although online training programs have become more popular as a means of attending class without the need for travel, in this case they are not totally internet based. Just about all electrician schools require some attendance on-campus to receive practical hands-on training. But since the balance of the classes can be attended online, internet learning might be a more accommodating option for individuals that have minimal time for schooling. And as an added benefit many online training programs have a reduced tuition cost compared to their on campus competitors. Driving costs from Fifty Lakes MN are also lessened and a portion of the study materials can be accessed online as well. Each of these benefits can make electrician online tech schools more economical and accessible. And many are fully accredited, which we will address in our questions to ask checklist.

Questions to Ask Electrician Tech Schools

Questions to ask Fifty Lakes MN electrician schoolsNow that you have decided to obtain a certificate, diploma or degree, you can start to refine your school options. Because there are numerous electrician trade and vocational schools in the Fifty Lakes MN region, it’s important to have a checklist of criteria that each school must meet. The first two that we mentioned were location and tuition expense. If you are interested in earning an online degree, then that needs to be an option that your final school offers. And even though all three qualifiers may be critical when making your decision, there are other factors that need to be considered as well. Following is a checklist of those additional qualifications that you will need to research before selecting an electrical technical school.

Accreditation.  Many electrician trade schools have attained either a regional or a national accreditation. They can receive Institutional Accreditation, which focuses on the school’s programs overall, or Programmatic Accreditation, which pertains to a specific program, for example electrical technology. Make certain that the Fifty Lakes MN school and program are accredited by a U.S. Department of Education approved accrediting agency, for instance the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology. Along with helping ensure that you receive a quality education, it may assist in acquiring financial aid or student loans, which are frequently not available for non-accredited schools. Additionally, some states mandate that the electrician training course be accredited for it to be approved for licensing.

High Completion and Placement Rates.  Ask the electrician training programs you are reviewing what their completion rates are. The completion rate is the percentage or portion of students who enroll in and complete the course. A lower completion rate could indicate that students were unhappy with the program and dropped out. It could also indicate that the instructors were not competent to train the students. It’s also important that the schools have higher job placement rates. Older and/or more reputable schools may have a more extensive list of graduates, which can produce more contacts for the school to use for their apprenticeship and job placement programs. A high job placement rate can not only validate that the school has an excellent reputation within the industry, but also that it has the network of contacts to help Fifty Lakes MN grads acquire apprenticeships or jobs.

Apprenticeship Programs.  Most electrician training programs are taught along with an internship or an apprenticeship program. Those participating trade and technical programs will help place you in an apprenticeship program within their network of electrician companies or trade unions. Check if the schools you are considering have referring partnerships with Fifty Lakes MN area electricians or electrical specialists. An apprenticeship not only offers a valuable experience by supplying hands-on training, but it also furnishes employment opportunities and helps to build relationships in the regional electrician professional community.

Modern Facilities.  Make certain that the school facilities and the tools that you will be instructed on are up-to-date and what you will be working with in the field. If you are presently in an internship or an apprenticeship, consult with the electrical technician you are working with concerning what you should be expecting. Otherwise, ask a local Fifty Lakes MN electrical contracting company if they can provide some tips. Also keep in mind that unless you are able to move, the school must be within driving distance of your Fifty Lakes residence. Take note that if you decide to attend an out-of-state school, besides the added moving costs there may be increased tuition fees compared to in-state residents.

Smaller Classes.   It’s important that you receive as much personalized instruction as possible, which can be challenging in bigger classes. Ask if you can sit in on some of the classes so that you can see how big they are and witness first hand the interaction between students and instructors. Talk with some of the students and get their opinions relating to class sizes and instruction. Finally, speak with some of the teachers and learn what their level of expertise is and what certifications or degrees they have earned.

Flexible Scheduling.  Confirm that the class schedules for the programs you are assessing are flexible enough to handle your needs. If you are only able to attend classes in the evening or on weekends near Fifty Lakes MN, verify that the schools you are reviewing offer those choices. If you can only attend on a part-time basis, make certain that the school you select permits part-time enrollment. Finally, check out what the policy is to make-up classes should you miss any because of work, sickness or family emergencies.

You originally came to this website due to an interest in Electrical Degree Online and wanting more information on the topic Vocational Electrician Schools. But as we have addressed in this article, there are a number of factors that you will need to assess and compare among the training programs you are considering. It’s a must that any electrician training that you are reviewing includes a good deal of hands-on training. Classes need to be smaller in size and each student should have their personal equipment to train with. Classroom education should offer a real-world frame of reference, and the curriculum should be up-to-date and in-line with industry standards. Programs differ in duration and the type of credential offered, so you will need to determine what length of program and credential will best fulfill your needs. Every program provides different options for certification also. Probably the best means to research your short list of schools is to go to each campus and talk with the faculty and students.
