Electrician Certificate, Diploma and Degree Options

Ghent MN electrician on power line poleThere are three general ways to get electrician training in a trade or technical school near Ghent MN. You can enroll in a diploma or certificate program, or obtain an Associate Degree. Bachelor’s Degrees are offered at some schools, but are not as common as the first three options. In many cases these programs are offered combined with an apprenticeship program, which are required by most states in order to be licensed or if you want to earn certification. Bellow are short summaries of the 3 most typical programs available.

  • Certificate and Diploma Programs are generally provided by Minnesota technical and trade schools and take about a year to complete. They furnish a good foundation and are aimed towards students who would like to get into an apprenticeship more quickly as a journeyman electrician.
  • Associate Degree Programs take two years to complete and are provided by Minnesota junior or community colleges, commonly as an Associate Degree in Electrical Technology. They offer a more extensive education while providing the foundation that readies students to enter into their apprenticeship program.

As previously mentioned, Bachelor’s Degree programs are accessible at certain Minnesota institutions, but are less favored at four years than the other shorter programs. Most states require that an apprenticeship of at least 2 years and in most cases 4 years be carried out prior to licensing. For that reason, the majority of students are anxious to begin their paid apprenticeship, especially if it’s not a component of their academic program.

Electrician License and Certification Prerequisites

After completing an apprenticeship, journeyman electricians are required to become licensed in the majority of states or municipalities. The length of apprenticeship differs by state, but typically about 4 to 5 years of experience is needed in order to take the licensing examination. The exams usually test general knowledge and electrical theory, as well as knowledge of the National Electrical Code (NEC). Receiving certification is also an optional means for an electrician to distinguish her or himself as a experienced and skilled professional. The certifications available differ by state and may be earned in numerous specializations, such as cable splicing as an example. The certification process usually involves 3 levels of competency:

  • An experience requirement
  • Passing a written exam
  • Passing a practical exam

Examples of certifying agencies include the National Joint Apprenticeship and Training Committee (NJATC) along with the National Institute for Certification in Engineering Technologies (NICET). It’s crucial that the electrician vocational school that you choose not only provides a strong educational foundation, but also helps prepare you for passing any licensing and certification exams that you might need to pass in the future.

Attending Electrician Schools Online

Ghent MN student attending electrician school onlineAn option that you may have contemplated is enrolling in an online electrician school to earn a degree or a certificate. Even though online schools have become more popular as a means of attending class without needing to travel, in this case they are not completely internet based. Just about all electrician training programs require partial attendance on campus to get practical hands-on training. But since the rest of the classes may be accessed online, internet learning can be a more practical choice for students that have minimal time for education. And as a bonus many online degree programs have a cheaper tuition cost compared to their on campus competitors. Travelling expenses from Ghent MN are also reduced and some of the study materials can be accessed on line as well. All of these advantages can make online electrician trade schools more affordable and accessible. And a number are fully accredited, which we will cover in our questions to ask checklist.

Topics to Ask Electrician Training Schools

Questions to ask Ghent MN electrician schoolsNow that you have decided to obtain a diploma, certificate or degree, you can start to focus your training options. Since there are so many electrician vocational and trade schools in the Ghent MN area, it’s essential to have a checklist of qualifications that each program must meet. The initial 2 that we talked about were location and the cost of tuition. If you are interested in earning an online degree, then that must be a feature that your final school offers. And while all three qualifiers may be important when making your selection, there are other factors that need to be considered also. Following is a checklist of those additional qualifiers that you will need to research before choosing an electrical vocational school.

Accreditation.  A large number of electrician vocational schools have attained either a regional or a national accreditation. They can acquire Institutional Accreditation, which involves the school’s programs overall, or Programmatic Accreditation, which relates to an individual program, for example electrical technology. Make certain that the Ghent MN school and program are accredited by a U.S. Department of Education recognized accrediting organization, such as the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology. In addition to helping make certain that you acquire an excellent education, it may assist in acquiring financial aid or student loans, which are often not available for non-accredited programs. Furthermore, a number of states mandate that the electrician training program be accredited for it to qualify for licensing.

High Completion and Placement Rates.  Ask the electrician schools you are looking at what their completion rates are. The completion rate is the percentage or portion of students who enroll in and finish the program. A low completion rate could indicate that students were disappointed with the program and dropped out. It could also signify that the teachers were not qualified to instruct the students. It’s similarly essential that the schools have higher job placement rates. Older and/or more reputable schools may have a more extensive directory of graduates, which can result in more contacts for the school to utilize for their apprenticeship and job placement programs. A high job placement rate can not only affirm that the school has a good reputation within the trade, but also that it has the network of contacts to help Ghent MN grads obtain apprenticeships or jobs.

Apprenticeship Programs.  Numerous electrician technical programs are taught together with an internship or an apprenticeship program. Those participating trade and vocational programs will help place you in an apprenticeship program within their network of electrical companies or labor unions. Ask if the schools you are considering have referring relationships with Ghent MN area electricians or electrical companies. An apprenticeship not only provides a valuable experience by furnishing hands-on training, but it also supplies employment opportunities and helps to build relationships in the regional electrician professional community.

Modern Facilities.  Make sure that the school facilities and the tools that you will be instructed on are state-of-the-art and what you will be using on the job. If you are currently in an internship or an apprenticeship, check with the electrical specialist you are working under concerning what you should be expecting. Otherwise, ask a local Ghent MN electrical contracting company if they can give you some pointers. Additionally keep in mind that unless you can move, the school needs to be within commuting distance of your Ghent home. Take note that if you decide to attend an out-of-state school, in addition to relocation costs there might be increased tuition charges compared to in-state residents.

Smaller Classes.   It’s desirable that you get as much personalized instruction as possible, which can be challenging in bigger classes. Ask if you can monitor a couple of the classes so that you can observe how large they are and witness first hand the interaction between students and instructors. Speak to several of the students and get their opinions regarding class sizes and instruction. Last, talk to a few of the teachers and learn what their level of experience is and what certifications or degrees they hold.

Flexible Scheduling.  Make sure that the class schedules for the programs you are evaluating are flexible enough to fulfill your needs. If you can only attend classes at night or on weekends near Ghent MN, confirm that the schools you are comparing provide those choices. If you can only attend on a part-time basis, make certain that the school you select permits part-time enrollment. Also, find out what the policy is to make-up classes should you miss any because of work, sickness or family issues.
