Electrician Degree, Diploma and Certificate Options

Humboldt MN electrician on power line poleThere are multiple options to receive electrician instruction in a trade or technical school near Humboldt MN. You can select a diploma or certificate program, or earn an Associate Degree. Bachelor’s Degrees are obtainable at a few schools, but are not as prevalent as the first three options. Frequently these programs are offered in conjunction with an apprenticeship, which are mandated by the majority of states in order to become licensed or if you wish to become certified. Bellow are brief explanations of the 3 most prevalent programs offered.

  • Diploma and Certificate Programs are usually offered by Minnesota technical and trade schools and require about a year to finish. They provide a good foundation and are geared towards those who want to join an apprenticeship more quickly as a journeyman electrician.
  • Associate Degree Programs take 2 years to complete and are provided by Minnesota community colleges, usually as an Associate Degree in Electrical Technology. They provide a more extensive education while providing the foundation that prepares students to join their apprenticeship program.

As earlier mentioned, Bachelor’s Degrees are offered at certain Minnesota colleges, but are less preferred at four years than the other shorter programs. Most states mandate that an apprenticeship of at least 2 years and in most cases four years be completed before licensing. Because of that, many students are eager to start their paid apprenticeship, especially if it’s not part of their educational program.

Receiving certification is also a voluntary means for an electrician to differentiate her or himself as a experienced and skilled professional. The certifications available differ by state and may be earned in various specialties, including cable splicing as an example. The certification procedure usually includes 3 levels of competency:

Modern Facilities.  Make certain that the school facilities and the tools that you will be instructed on are up-to-date and what you will be using in the field. If you are already in an internship or an apprenticeship, talk to the electrical specialist you are working under concerning what you should be looking for. Otherwise, ask a local Humboldt MN electrical company if they can give you some tips. Additionally keep in mind that unless you can relocate, the school must be within driving distance of your Humboldt residence. Take note that if you decide to enroll in an out-of-state school, besides the added moving costs there may be increased tuition fees compared to in-state residents.

Smaller Classes.   It’s desirable that you get as much one-on-one instruction as possible, which can be difficult in larger classes. Ask if you can sit in on a few of the classes so that you can observe how big they are and experience the interaction between teachers and students. Talk with several of the students and get their opinions regarding class sizes and instruction. Finally, talk with some of the instructors and learn what their level of expertise is and what degrees or certifications they have earned.

Flexible Scheduling.  Verify that the class schedules for the programs you are reviewing are flexible enough to handle your needs.
