Electrician Degree, Diploma and Certificate Programs

Side Lake MN electrician on power line poleThere are three general approaches to get electrician instruction in a vocational or trade school near Side Lake MN. You may choose a certificate or diploma program, or obtain an Associate Degree. Bachelor’s Degrees are available at a few schools, but are not as prevalent as the other three alternatives. Often these programs are offered together with an apprenticeship program, which are mandated by the majority of states in order to become licensed or if you intend to earn certification. Bellow are brief summaries of the 3 most common programs offered.

  • Diploma and Certificate Programs are typically offered by Minnesota vocational and trade schools and require approximately a year to complete. They furnish a solid foundation and are geared towards those who want to join an apprenticeship more quickly as a journeyman electrician.
  • Associate Degrees require 2 years to complete and are provided by Minnesota community colleges, commonly as an Associate Degree in Electrical Technology. They provide a more extensive education while providing the foundation that prepares students to join their apprenticeship program.

As previously mentioned, Bachelor’s Degree programs are available at certain Minnesota institutions, but are less popular at 4 years than the other briefer programs. Most states mandate that an apprenticeship of at least 2 years and more typically 4 years be performed prior to licensing. Because of that, most students are anxious to begin their paid apprenticeship, particularly if it’s not part of their academic program.

The certifications offered vary by state and can be obtained in numerous specialties, including cable splicing as an example. The certification process in most cases entails 3 levels of competency:

Otherwise, ask a local Side Lake MN electrical contractor if they can give you some pointers. Also keep in mind that unless you can move, the school must be within driving distance of your Side Lake residence. Remember that if you decide to enroll in an out-of-state school, besides the added relocation costs there can be higher tuition fees compared to in-state residents.

Smaller Classes.   It’s desirable that you get as much individualized instruction as possible, which can be difficult in larger classes. Ask if you can monitor some of the classes so that you can see how big they are and experience the interaction between teachers and students. Speak with several of the students and get their comments concerning class sizes and instruction. Finally, talk to some of the teachers and find out what their level of expertise is and what certifications or degrees they have earned.
