Electrician Certificate, Diploma and Degree Programs

Satartia MS electrician on power line poleThere are three general ways to get electrician instruction in a vocational or trade school near Satartia MS. You may enroll in a diploma or certificate program, or earn an Associate Degree. Bachelor’s Degrees are available at a few schools, but are not as common as the first three alternatives. In many cases these programs are offered combined with an apprenticeship program, which are required by most states to become licensed or if you intend to earn certification. Following are brief descriptions of the 3 most common programs available.

  • Diploma and Certificate Programs are generally provided by Mississippi trade and technical schools and take about a year to complete. They furnish a solid foundation and are geared towards individuals who would like to get into an apprenticeship faster as a journeyman electrician.
  • Associate Degree Programs take two years to finish and are provided by Mississippi junior or community colleges, usually as an Associate Degree in Electrical Technology. They furnish a more extensive education while supplying the foundation that readies students to begin their apprenticeship program.

As earlier mentioned, Bachelor’s Degree programs are available at some Mississippi colleges, but are less popular at four years than the other briefer programs. Most states mandate that an apprenticeship of at least 2 years and more typically 4 years be carried out prior to licensing. Because of that, most students are anxious to commence their paid apprenticeship, especially if it’s not a component of their educational program.

Electrician Licensing and Certification Requirements

Satartia MS electrician wiring boxElectricians in Satartia MS can perform a vast array of tasks, such as testing, installing and replacing electrical systems, and making sure that the wiring in houses and buildings are up to code standards. After completing an apprenticeship, journeyman electricians are mandated to be licensed in most municipalities and states. The length of apprenticeship differs by state, but typically about four to five years of practical experience is called for before taking the licensing examination. The exams typically test general knowledge and electrical theory, as well as knowledge of the National Electrical Code (NEC). Receiving certification is also an optional method for an electrician to differentiate her or himself as a skilled and experienced professional. The certifications available vary by state and may be acquired in numerous specializations, such as cable splicing as an example. The certification procedure in most cases involves three levels of proficiency:

  • An experience requirement
  • Passing a written exam
  • Passing a practical exam

Examples of certifying agencies include the National Joint Apprenticeship and Training Committee (NJATC) along with the National Institute for Certification in Engineering Technologies (NICET). It’s crucial that the electrician trade school that you select not only furnishes a strong academic foundation, but also helps prepare you for passing any certification and licensing examinations that you might be required to take in the future.

Attending Electrician Schools Online

Satartia MS student attending electrician school onlineAn alternative that you might have considered is choosing an online electrician school to earn a certificate or degree. While online schools are becoming more prevalent as a way of attending class without the need for travel, in this instance they are not entirely internet based. Pretty much all electrician schools require some attendance on campus to obtain practical hands-on training. But since the balance of the classes can be accessed online, distance learning may be a more accommodating choice for individuals that have limited time for schooling. And as an added benefit many online training programs have a cheaper tuition cost compared to their on campus alternatives. Commuting costs from Satartia MS are also reduced and some of the study materials may be accessed on line also. All of these benefits can make online electrician trade schools more economical and accessible. And a number are fully accredited, which we will deal with in our questions to ask checklist.

Things to Ask Electrician Tech Schools

Questions to ask Satartia MS electrician schoolsOnce you have made a decision to obtain a diploma, certificate or degree, you can begin to narrow down your school options. Considering that there are numerous electrician vocational and trade schools in the Satartia MS region, it’s important to have a checklist of qualifications that each program must meet. The initial two that we mentioned were location and tuition expense. If you have an interest in earning an degree online, then that must be a feature that your final school offers. And even though all three qualifiers may be critical when making your decision, there are other factors that must be considered also. Below is a checklist of those added qualifiers that you will need to research before choosing an electrical trade school.

Accreditation.  Many electrician technical schools have received either a regional or a national accreditation. They can attain Institutional Accreditation, which involves the school’s programs as a whole, or Programmatic Accreditation, which pertains to a specific program, for example electrical technology. Make certain that the Satartia MS program and school are accredited by a U.S. Department of Education approved accrediting agency, for example the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology. Along with helping make certain that you obtain a superior education, it may assist in securing financial aid or student loans, which are frequently unavailable for non-accredited programs. Furthermore, a number of states require that the electrician training course be accredited in order to be approved for licensing.

High Completion and Placement Rates.  Ask the electrician schools you are considering what their completion rates are. The completion rate is the percentage or portion of students who enroll in and complete the program. A lower completion rate could suggest that students were disappointed with the program and quit. It may also suggest that the instructors were not qualified to instruct the students. It’s similarly essential that the schools have high job placement rates. Older and/or more reputable schools may have a more extensive directory of alumni, which may mean more contacts for the school to employ for their apprenticeship and job placement programs. A high job placement rate can not only confirm that the school has a good reputation within the industry, but also that it has the network of contacts to help Satartia MS grads secure apprenticeships or employment.

Apprenticeship Programs.  Numerous electrician vocational programs are taught in conjunction with an apprenticeship or an internship program. Those participating vocational and technical schools will help place you in an apprenticeship program inside their network of electrician contractors or trade unions. Check if the schools you are reviewing have referring partnerships with Satartia MS area electricians or electrical companies. An apprenticeship not only offers a rewarding experience by furnishing practical training, but it also supplies job opportunities and helps to establish relationships in the local electrician professional community.

Modern Facilities.  Make sure that the school facilities and the tools that you will be trained on are state-of-the-art and what you will be using on the job. If you are already in an internship or an apprenticeship, consult with the electrical tech you are working under concerning what you should be expecting. Otherwise, ask a local Satartia MS electrical contracting company if they can give you some suggestions. Also bear in mind that unless you can relocate, the school must be within driving distance of your Satartia residence. Take note that if you decide to attend an out-of-state school, besides the added moving costs there can be higher tuition charges compared to in-state residents.

Smaller Classes.   It’s desirable that you get as much personalized instruction as possible, which can be difficult in bigger classes. Ask if you can sit in on some of the classes so that you can observe how big they are and witness first hand the interaction between students and teachers. Speak to a few of the students and get their opinions regarding class sizes and instruction. Finally, speak to a few of the instructors and learn what their level of expertise is and what certifications or degrees they have earned.

Flexible Scheduling.  Make sure that the class schedules for the schools you are assessing are flexible enough to meet your needs. If you can only go to classes in the evening or on weekends near Satartia MS, verify that the schools you are reviewing provide those choices. If you can only attend on a part-time basis, make sure that the school you select permits part-time enrollment. Finally, check out what the protocol is to make-up classes should you miss any due to work, sickness or family issues.

    Satartia, Mississippi

Satartia is a Choctaw word meaning "pumpkin place",[6] likely due to the small gourds that grow in the area. In the early 1800s, Satartia was a busy shipping point from which cotton was transported by steamboat to New Orleans along the Yazoo River.[5]

During the Civil War, General Grant sailed a gunboat from Vicksburg and captured the village; the Wilson House on Plum Street was used as his headquarters during the occupation.[5] The war also produced the "Satartia Rifles", a well-regarded Confederate regiment and recruitment group.[7]

As of the census[9] of 2000, there were 68 people, 28 households, and 22 families residing in the village. The population density was 454.5 people per square mile (175.0/km²). There were 32 housing units at an average density of 213.9 per square mile (82.4/km²). The racial make-up of the village was 85.29% White and 14.71% African American.
