Electrician Degree, Certificate and Diploma Programs

Sebastopol MS electrician on power line poleThere are three general approaches to receive electrician instruction in a trade or technical school near Sebastopol MS. You can select a diploma or certificate program, or receive an Associate Degree. Bachelor’s Degrees are available at some schools, but are not as common as the first three alternatives. In many cases these programs are made available combined with an apprenticeship program, which are required by most states to be licensed or if you would like to earn certification. Bellow are brief summaries of the 3 most common programs offered.

  • Certificate and Diploma Programs are usually provided by Mississippi technical and trade schools and take approximately a year to finish. They furnish a solid foundation and are aimed towards those who would like to get into an apprenticeship more quickly as a journeyman electrician.
  • Associate Degree Programs take 2 years to finish and are offered by Mississippi junior or community colleges, typically as an Associate Degree in Electrical Technology. They offer a more extensive education while providing the foundation that prepares students to begin their apprenticeship program.

As previously mentioned, Bachelor’s Degree programs are accessible at some Mississippi colleges, but are less preferred at 4 years than the other briefer programs. Most states mandate that an apprenticeship of at least 2 years and more typically four years be performed prior to licensing. Because of that, many students are anxious to commence their paid apprenticeship, particularly if it’s not part of their educational program.

Electrician Certification and Licensing Prerequisites

Sebastopol MS electrician wiring boxElectricians in Sebastopol MS can carry out a wide range of duties, such as installing, replacing and testing electrical systems, and ensuring that the wiring in houses and buildings are up to code standards. After completing an apprenticeship, journeyman electricians are required to be licensed in most states or municipalities. The length of apprenticeship differs by state, but typically around 4 to 5 years of practical experience is required before taking the licensing exam. The exams usually test general knowledge and electrical theory, as well as understanding of the National Electrical Code (NEC). Receiving certification is also a voluntary means for an electrician to identify her or himself as a experienced and skilled professional. The certifications offered vary by state and can be earned in several specializations, including cable splicing as an example. The certification procedure in most cases entails 3 levels of proficiency:

  • An experience requirement
  • Passing a written exam
  • Passing a practical exam

Examples of certifying agencies include the National Joint Apprenticeship and Training Committee (NJATC) and also the National Institute for Certification in Engineering Technologies (NICET). It’s imperative that the electrician vocational school that you select not only furnishes a solid academic foundation, but also helps prepare you for passing any licensing and certification examinations that you might be required to pass in the future.

Attending Electrician Online Schools

Sebastopol MS student attending electrician school onlineA possibility that you may have considered is choosing an electrician online school to earn a certificate or degree. Even though online training programs have become more popular as a way of attending class without the need for travel, in this case they are not totally internet based. Virtually all electrician training programs require partial attendance on campus to get practical hands-on training. But since the balance of the classes can be attended online, distance learning can be a more practical choice for individuals that have limited time for education. And as a bonus numerous online degree programs have a cheaper tuition cost compared to their traditional counterparts. Travelling costs from Sebastopol MS are also reduced and a portion of the study materials may be accessed online also. Each of these benefits can make online electrician vocational schools more economical and convenient. And many are fully accredited, which we will cover in our questions to ask checklist.

What to Ask Electrician Training Schools

Questions to ask Sebastopol MS electrician schoolsWhen you have made a decision to earn a diploma, certificate or degree, you can start to narrow down your training options. Considering that there are so many electrician tech and trade schools in the Sebastopol MS area, it’s essential to have a checklist of qualifications that each program must meet. The initial 2 that we mentioned were location and the cost of tuition. If you are interested in earning an degree online, then that needs to be an option that your final school offers. And even though all three qualifiers may be crucial when making your decision, there are additional factors that must be considered as well. Following is a checklist of those added qualifications that you will need to assess prior to selecting an electrical technical school.

Accreditation.  Many electrician vocational programs have acquired either a regional or a national accreditation. They can acquire Institutional Accreditation, which involves the school’s programs overall, or Programmatic Accreditation, which relates to a specific program, such as electrical technology. Make certain that the Sebastopol MS school and program are accredited by a U.S. Department of Education recognized accrediting organization, such as the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology. Along with helping ensure that you acquire a quality education, it may assist in acquiring financial assistance or student loans, which are often not available for non-accredited programs. Additionally, a number of states mandate that the electrician training course be accredited in order to qualify for licensing.

High Completion and Placement Rates.  Ask the electrician training programs you are considering what their completion rates are. The completion rate is the portion or percentage of students who enroll in and finish the course. A lower completion rate may signify that students were dissatisfied with the course and quit. It could also mean that the instructors were not qualified to instruct the students. It’s similarly imperative that the schools have higher job placement rates. Older and/or more reputable schools may have a broader directory of alumni, which can mean more contacts for the school to utilize for their apprenticeship and job placement programs. A high job placement rate will not only confirm that the school has an excellent reputation within the field, but also that it has the network of contacts to help Sebastopol MS graduates acquire apprenticeships or employment.

Apprenticeship Programs.  Most electrician vocational programs are taught together with an internship or an apprenticeship program. Those participating technical and vocational programs will help place you in an apprenticeship program within their network of electrical contractors or labor unions. Find out if the schools you are reviewing have referring partnerships with Sebastopol MS area electricians or electrical specialists. An apprenticeship not only offers a valuable experience by providing practical training, but it also provides job opportunities and helps to establish relationships in the local electrician professional community.

Modern Facilities.  Make sure that the school facilities and the tools that you will be trained on are state-of-the-art and what you will be working with on the job. If you are presently in an internship or an apprenticeship, check with the electrical technician you are working with regarding what you should be expecting. If not, ask a local Sebastopol MS electrical contractor if they can provide some pointers. Additionally bear in mind that unless you can relocate, the school needs to be within commuting distance of your Sebastopol residence. Take note that if you decide to enroll in an out-of-state school, in addition to moving costs there may be higher tuition charges compared to in-state residents.

Smaller Classes.   It’s important that you get as much individualized instruction as possible, which can be challenging in larger classes. Ask if you can sit in on a few of the classes so that you can see how large they are and witness first hand the interaction between teachers and students. Talk with several of the students and get their comments concerning class sizes and instruction. Last, speak with a few of the instructors and find out what their level of expertise is and what degrees or certifications they hold.

Flexible Scheduling.  Verify that the class schedules for the programs you are assessing are flexible enough to handle your needs. If you can only attend classes at night or on weekends near Sebastopol MS, check that the schools you are reviewing provide those options. If you can only attend part-time, be sure that the school you select allows part-time enrollment. Additionally, check out what the protocol is to make-up classes should you miss any due to work, illness or family responsibilities.

Classes should be smaller in size and every student should have their personal equipment to train with. Classroom teaching needs to offer a real-world perspective, and the course of study should be up-to-date and in-line with industry standards. Courses vary in length and the kind of credential provided, so you will need to ascertain what length of program and degree or certificate will best fulfill your needs. Sebastopol, Mississippi

Sebastopol is located at 32°34′22″N 89°20′10″W / 32.57278°N 89.33611°W / 32.57278; -89.33611 (32.572788, -89.336094).[4] Most of the town is located in Scott County, although a tiny portion extends into Leake County. In the 2000 census, all of the city's 233 residents lived in Scott County. Although no residents lived in the Leake County portion in 2000, that figure had risen to 1 by 2006.[5]

Sebastopol was originally called "Hathaway Springs". The town was in existence before the Civil War but not incorporated until 1917. According to oral tradition, "a Swede" traveling through the area named the town for Sevastopol, Crimea. It is rumored that the "Swede" was Frederick Law Olmsted (Central Park Fame) who stayed at Sebastopol House in Seguin, Texas during his travels throughout the southern US. From 1852 to 1857 Olmsted was sent south by his employer, The New York Times, to study and write about slavery in the South (Journeys and Explorations in the Cotton Kingdom).

Sebastopol has a few local businesses that keep the town thriving. The town's main convenience store, "Duett's", has been owned and operated by the Duett family for years. The town also has "Brent's" gas station, which is closed on Sundays and stays open half a day on Wednesdays. The station is commonly referred to as "Brent's Texaco" even though Texaco plays no part in the store's operation anymore. The town has one grocery store which was once called "Hamill's." The store was bought out by Piggly Wiggly. Also a large contribution to Sebastopol is "Easom's Hardware", operated by the Easom family for many years, who also own Maxim Manufacturing on Hwy 21. The town has one pharmacy that has been in operation as Moore's Pharmacy since 1990. Many new businesses have been opened as of late, such as a "Dollar General", "Bethel Framing", "Tangle's, "ADD Trucking" and "Adele McDill Photography".
