Galt MO electrician on power line poleThere are several ways to receive electrician training in a vocational or trade school near Galt MO. You can enroll in a certificate or diploma program, or earn an Associate Degree. Bachelor’s Degrees are available at certain schools, but are not as common as the first three options. Often these programs are made available combined with an apprenticeship program, which are required by the majority of states in order to become licensed or if you intend to become certified. Bellow are short descriptions of the 3 most common programs available.

  • Certificate and Diploma Programs are generally provided by Missouri trade and technical schools and require approximately a year to finish. They provide a good foundation and are geared towards individuals who want to get into an apprenticeship faster as a journeyman electrician.
  • Associate Degrees involve two years to complete and are offered by Missouri junior or community colleges, commonly as an Associate Degree in Electrical Technology. They provide a more well-rounded education while providing the foundation that readies students to join their apprenticeship program.

As previously stated, Bachelor’s Degree programs are accessible at certain Missouri institutions, but are less favored at four years than the other shorter programs. Many states require that an apprenticeship of at least 2 years and more typically four years be performed before licensing. For that reason, many students are anxious to begin their paid apprenticeship, especially if it’s not part of their academic program.

The duration of apprenticeship differs by state, but generally about 4 to 5 years of practical experience is called for in order to take the licensing exam. The exams usually evaluate general knowledge and electrical theory, as well as knowledge of the National Electrical Code (NEC). Obtaining certification is also an optional method for an electrician to identify him or herself as a experienced and skilled professional. The certifications available differ by state and may be earned in several specialties, such as cable splicing as an example. The certification process in most cases involves 3 levels of competency:

  • An experience requirement
  • Passing a written exam
  • Passing a practical exam

Examples of certifying organizations include the National Joint Apprenticeship and Training Committee (NJATC) as well as the National Institute for Certification in Engineering Technologies (NICET). It’s crucial that the electrician trade school that you choose not only provides a solid academic foundation, but also helps prepare you for passing any licensing and certification exams that you might need to take in the future.

And even though all three qualifiers may be important when making your determination, there are other variables that need to be taken into account also. Below is a checklist of those added qualifiers that you will need to research before selecting an electrical vocational school.

Accreditation.  A large number of electrician trade programs have acquired either a regional or a national accreditation. High Completion and Placement Rates.  Ask the electrician training programs you are reviewing what their completion rates are. The completion rate is the percentage of students who enroll in and complete the program. A low completion rate could suggest that students were dissatisfied with the program and dropped out. It might also mean that the instructors were not competent to instruct the students. It’s similarly imperative that the schools have high job placement rates. Older and/or more reputable schools may have a broader list of graduates, which may mean more contacts for the school to utilize for their apprenticeship and job placement programs. A high job placement rate will not only validate that the school has an excellent reputation within the field, but additionally that it has the network of contacts to help Galt MO graduates acquire apprenticeships or jobs.

An apprenticeship not only provides a valuable experience by furnishing practical training, but it also provides employment opportunities and helps to establish relationships in the regional electrician professional community.

Modern Facilities.  Make sure that the campus facilities and the tools that you will be instructed on are state-of-the-art and what you will be working with in the field. If you are already in an internship or an apprenticeship, talk to the electrical tech you are working with regarding what you should be looking for. If not, ask a local Galt MO electrical contractor if they can provide some tips. Additionally keep in mind that unless you can relocate, the school needs to be within commuting distance of your Galt home. Take note that if you decide to attend an out-of-state school, in addition to moving costs there may be higher tuition charges compared to in-state residents.

Smaller Classes.   It’s desirable that you receive as much personalized instruction as possible, which can be difficult in larger classes. Ask if you can monitor some of the classes so that you can see how big they are and witness first hand the interaction between instructors and students. Speak to several of the students and get their opinions concerning class sizes and instruction. Finally, speak to a few of the instructors and learn what their level of expertise is and what certifications or degrees they hold.

Flexible Scheduling.  Confirm that the class schedules for the programs you are reviewing are flexible enough to fulfill your needs. If you are only able to attend classes at night or on weekends near Galt MO, check that the programs you are considering provide those options.
