Electrician Degree, Diploma and Certificate Programs

Kimberling City MO electrician on power line poleThere are three general options to receive electrician training in a technical or vocational school near Kimberling City MO. You may enroll in a diploma or certificate program, or obtain an Associate Degree. Bachelor’s Degrees are obtainable at a few schools, but are not as prevalent as the first three options. In many cases these programs are offered in conjunction with an apprenticeship program, which are required by the majority of states in order to become licensed or if you would like to earn certification. Following are short explanations of the three most common programs available.

  • Diploma and Certificate Programs are usually provided by Missouri vocational and trade schools and require about a year to finish. They furnish a solid foundation and are geared towards those who want to get into an apprenticeship faster as a journeyman electrician.
  • Associate Degree Programs require two years to finish and are provided by Missouri junior or community colleges, usually as an Associate Degree in Electrical Technology. They provide a more comprehensive education while providing the foundation that readies students to enter into their apprenticeship program.

As previously stated, Bachelor’s Degree programs are accessible at some Missouri institutions, but are less preferred at four years than the other shorter programs. The majority of states require that an apprenticeship of no less than 2 years and in most cases 4 years be performed before licensing. For that reason, the majority of students are eager to begin their paid apprenticeship, especially if it’s not a component of their educational program.

The length of apprenticeship differs by state, but typically around four to five years of practical experience is called for in order to take the licensing exam. The exams usually evaluate general knowledge and electrical theory, in addition to knowledge of the National Electrical Code (NEC). Obtaining certification is also an optional means for an electrician to distinguish her or himself as a skilled and experienced professional. The certifications offered vary by state and may be obtained in several specialties, including cable splicing as an example. The certification process usually involves 3 levels of competency:

  • An experience requirement
  • Passing a written exam
  • Passing a practical exam

Examples of certifying organizations include the National Joint Apprenticeship and Training Committee (NJATC) as well as the National Institute for Certification in Engineering Technologies (NICET). It’s important that the electrician vocational school that you enroll in not only delivers a solid academic foundation, but also helps prep you for passing any licensing and certification examinations that you may need to pass in the future.
