Electrician Certificate, Diploma and Degree Options

Greycliff MT electrician on power line poleThere are three general approaches to receive electrician training in a technical or vocational school near Greycliff MT. You may select a diploma or certificate program, or obtain an Associate Degree. Bachelor’s Degrees are available at a few schools, but are not as common as the first three alternatives. In many cases these programs are made available together with an apprenticeship program, which are mandated by most states in order to be licensed or if you would like to earn certification. Bellow are brief descriptions of the 3 most typical programs available.

  • Diploma and Certificate Programs are generally provided by Montana vocational and trade schools and require about a year to complete. They provide a solid foundation and are aimed towards those who would like to get into an apprenticeship faster as a journeyman electrician.
  • Associate Degrees involve 2 years to finish and are provided by Montana junior or community colleges, typically as an Associate Degree in Electrical Technology. They furnish a more extensive education while providing the foundation that prepares students to enter into their apprenticeship program.

As earlier stated, Bachelor’s Degrees are offered at some Montana colleges, but are less favored at 4 years than the other briefer programs. Many states require that an apprenticeship of at least 2 years and more typically 4 years be completed before licensing. Therefore, the majority of students are anxious to commence their paid apprenticeship, particularly if it’s not part of their educational program.

Electrician Certification and Licensing Guidelines

Greycliff MT electrician wiring boxElectricians in Greycliff MT can undertake a wide range of services, such as installing, replacing and testing electrical systems, and making sure that the wiring in buildings and homes are up to code standards. After completing an apprenticeship, journeyman electricians are required to become licensed in most municipalities and states. The length of apprenticeship differs by state, but typically about four to five years of practical experience is needed in order to take the licensing examination. The exams commonly assess electrical theory and general knowledge, as well as understanding of the National Electrical Code (NEC). Receiving certification is also a voluntary method for an electrician to differentiate her or himself as a skilled and experienced professional. The certifications offered differ by state and can be earned in various specialties, including cable splicing as an example. The certification procedure usually includes 3 levels of competency:

  • An experience requirement
  • Passing a written exam
  • Passing a practical exam

Examples of certifying organizations include the National Joint Apprenticeship and Training Committee (NJATC) and also the National Institute for Certification in Engineering Technologies (NICET). It’s crucial that the electrician trade school that you pick not only furnishes a solid educational foundation, but also helps prepare you for passing any licensing and certification exams that you might need to pass in the future.

Enrolling in Electrician Schools Online

Greycliff MT student attending electrician school onlineA possibility that you might have looked at is enrolling in an online electrician program to earn a degree or a certificate. Although online schools are becoming more prevalent as a way of attending class without needing to travel, in this instance they are not entirely internet based. Virtually all electrician training programs require partial attendance on-campus to receive practical hands-on training. But since the balance of the classes can be accessed online, internet learning might be a more accommodating option for individuals that have minimal time for schooling. And as an added benefit numerous online degree programs have a cheaper tuition cost compared to their on-campus competitors. Commuting expenses from Greycliff MT are also minimized and a portion of the study materials can be accessed on line also. Each of these advantages can make online electrician vocational schools more economical and convenient. And many are fully accredited, which we will discuss in our due diligence checklist.

Questions to Ask Electrician Tech Schools

Questions to ask Greycliff MT electrician schoolsOnce you have decided to obtain a diploma, certificate or degree, you can start to focus your school options. Since there are so many electrician tech and trade schools in the Greycliff MT region, it’s essential to have a checklist of qualifications that each program must satisfy. The first two that we mentioned were location and the cost of tuition. If you are interested in earning an online degree, then that must be an option that your final school offers. And even though all three qualifiers may be crucial when making your selection, there are other factors that need to be considered also. Below is a checklist of those added qualifications that you will need to research before choosing an electrical vocational school.

Accreditation.  Many electrician vocational schools have earned either a regional or a national accreditation. They can receive Institutional Accreditation, which involves the school’s programs overall, or Programmatic Accreditation, which pertains to a specific program, for instance electrical technology. Confirm that the Greycliff MT program is accredited by a U.S. Department of Education recognized accrediting agency, for example the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology. In addition to helping make certain that you get a quality education, it may help in acquiring financial assistance or student loans, which are often not available for non-accredited schools. Also, some states require that the electrician training course be accredited for it to be approved for licensing.

High Completion and Placement Rates.  Ask the electrician schools you are looking at what their completion rates are. The completion rate is the portion or percentage of students who enroll in and complete the course. A lower completion rate could indicate that students were disappointed with the course and quit. It might also mean that the instructors were not qualified to instruct the students. It’s similarly important that the schools have higher job placement rates. Older and/or more reputable schools may have a broader directory of alumni, which can result in more contacts for the school to utilize for their apprenticeship and job placement programs. A high job placement rate will not only confirm that the school has a good reputation within the field, but also that it has the network of contacts to help Greycliff MT graduates acquire apprenticeships or employment.

Apprenticeship Programs.  A large number of electrician trade programs are taught along with an internship or an apprenticeship program. Those participating vocational and trade programs will help place you in an apprenticeship program inside their network of electrical businesses or labor unions. Ask if the schools you are considering have referring partnerships with Greycliff MT area electricians or electrical contractors. An apprenticeship not only provides a rewarding experience by furnishing hands-on training, but it also provides job opportunities and helps to form relationships in the local electrician professional community.

Modern Facilities.  Make sure that the school facilities and the equipment that you will be instructed on are state-of-the-art and what you will be using in the field. If you are already in an internship or an apprenticeship, consult with the electrical tech you are working with regarding what you should be expecting. Otherwise, ask a local Greycliff MT electrical contracting company if they can provide some suggestions. Also keep in mind that unless you can relocate, the school needs to be within driving distance of your Greycliff residence. Take note that if you decide to enroll in an out-of-state school, in addition to relocation costs there might be increased tuition fees compared to in-state residents.

Smaller Classes.   It’s desirable that you get as much one-on-one training as possible, which can be difficult in larger classes. Ask if you can sit in on some of the classes so that you can see how big they are and witness first hand the interaction between students and teachers. Speak with a few of the students and get their opinions regarding class sizes and instruction. Last, speak with a few of the instructors and learn what their level of experience is and what degrees or certifications they hold.

Flexible Scheduling.  Confirm that the class schedules for the programs you are reviewing are flexible enough to meet your needs. If you are only able to go to classes at night or on weekends near Greycliff MT, check that the programs you are reviewing offer those options. If you can only attend on a part-time basis, make certain that the school you select allows part-time enrollment. Additionally, find out what the protocol is to make-up classes should you miss any because of work, sickness or family issues.

But as we have discussed in this article, there are several factors that you will need to assess and compare between the schools you are considering. It’s a prerequisite that any electrician training program that you are considering includes a good deal of hands-on instruction. Classes should be smaller in size and each student must have their own equipment to train with. Classroom education needs to provide a real-world perspective, and the course of study should be current and conform with industry standards. Training programs vary in duration and the type of credential provided, so you will have to ascertain what length of program and credential will best serve your needs. Every program provides different options for certification as well. Perhaps the best means to research your final list of schools is to visit each campus and talk with the teachers and students.
