Alvo NE electrician working on circuit boardThe first step to becoming an electrical tradesman or contractor is locating an electrician trade school near Alvo NE. But with so many technical schools to pick from, just how do you tackle making sure that you enroll in the ideal one? Especially since there are so many variables to examine. For example, some students will begin by looking for schools that are close to their residence. Once they have found several that are within driving distance, they will decide on the one with the lowest tuition. Although location and cost are important, they are not the only things that should be examined. Also critical are the accreditation and reputations of the schools, as well as their job placement and graduation rates. These and additional qualifiers should help mold your ultimate judgment when picking an electrician school. We will talk about that checklist in more detail later in this post. But to begin with, let’s review a little bit about becoming an electrician and the educational options that are available.

Electrician Degree, Certificate and Diploma Options

Alvo NE electrician on power line poleThere are multiple approaches to receive electrician training in a trade or technical school near Alvo NE. You may select a diploma or certificate program, or earn an Associate Degree. Bachelor’s Degrees are available at certain schools, but are not as prevalent as the other three options. Often these programs are offered together with an apprenticeship program, which are required by the majority of states to be licensed or if you would like to earn certification. Bellow are short descriptions of the 3 most prevalent programs available.

  • Certificate and Diploma Programs are generally offered by Nebraska technical and trade schools and take about a year to finish. They provide a solid foundation and are geared towards those who wish to enter an apprenticeship more quickly as a journeyman electrician.
  • Associate Degree Programs require two years to complete and are offered by Nebraska community colleges, commonly as an Associate Degree in Electrical Technology. They offer a more comprehensive education while providing the foundation that readies students to join their apprenticeship program.

As earlier mentioned, Bachelor’s Degrees are offered at some Nebraska institutions, but are less favored at four years than the other shorter programs. Many states mandate that an apprenticeship of at least 2 years and in most cases four years be carried out before licensing. Because of that, the majority of students are eager to start their paid apprenticeship, especially if it’s not a component of their academic program.

Electrician Licensing and Certification Requirements

Alvo NE electrician wiring boxElectricians in Alvo NE can perform a wide range of functions, such as installing, replacing and testing electrical systems, and making sure that the wiring in houses and buildings comply with code standards. After concluding an apprenticeship, journeyman electricians are required to become licensed in most municipalities and states. The period of apprenticeship varies by state, but generally about four to five years of prior experience is required before taking the licensing examination. The exams commonly test general knowledge and electrical theory, along with knowledge of the National Electrical Code (NEC). Receiving certification is also an optional method for an electrician to differentiate him or herself as a skilled and experienced professional. The certifications offered differ by state and can be obtained in various specializations, including cable splicing as an example. The certification process in most cases entails 3 levels of proficiency:

  • An experience requirement
  • Passing a written exam
  • Passing a practical exam

Examples of certifying agencies include the National Joint Apprenticeship and Training Committee (NJATC) as well as the National Institute for Certification in Engineering Technologies (NICET). It’s crucial that the electrician trade school that you enroll in not only delivers a strong educational foundation, but also helps ready you for passing any certification and licensing examinations that you may be required to take in the future.

Alvo NE student attending electrician school onlineAn alternative that you might have contemplated is choosing an online electrician school to earn a degree or a certificate. While online training programs are becoming more accepted as a means of attending class without needing to travel, in this case they are not entirely internet based. Just about all electrician schools require some attendance on campus to obtain practical hands-on training. But since the rest of the classes may be accessed online, internet learning can be a more practical alternative for individuals that have limited time for schooling. And as an added benefit numerous online schools have a cheaper tuition cost compared to their on campus competitors. Travelling expenses from Alvo NE are also reduced and some of the study materials can be available online also. Each of these benefits can make online electrician vocational schools more affordable and convenient. And a number are fully accredited, which we will address in our questions to ask checklist.

What to Ask Electrician Vocational Schools

Questions to ask Alvo NE electrician schoolsOnce you have decided to obtain a certificate, diploma or degree, you can start to focus your training options. Because there are numerous electrician vocational and trade schools in the Alvo NE area, it’s essential to have a checklist of qualifications that each program must meet. The first two that we discussed were location and the cost of tuition. If you are interested in earning an degree online, then that needs to be an option that your chosen school offers. And although all three qualifiers may be critical when making your determination, there are additional factors that must be taken into account as well. Below is a checklist of those added qualifiers that you will need to research prior to enrolling in an electrical tech school.

Accreditation.  Numerous electrician vocational programs have acquired either a regional or a national accreditation. They may earn Institutional Accreditation, which involves the school’s programs overall, or Programmatic Accreditation, which pertains to an individual program, such as electrical technology. Make certain that the Alvo NE program and school are accredited by a U.S. Department of Education recognized accrediting agency, which includes the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology. Along with helping make certain that you obtain a quality education, it may assist in acquiring financial assistance or student loans, which are in many cases unavailable for non-accredited programs. Also, a number of states require that the electrician training course be accredited in order to be approved for licensing.

High Completion and Placement Rates.  Ask the electrician schools you are looking at what their completion rates are. The completion rate is the portion or percentage of students who enroll in and finish the program. A lower completion rate may suggest that students were unhappy with the program and dropped out. It may also signify that the teachers were not competent to train the students. It’s similarly essential that the schools have high job placement rates. Older and/or more reputable schools may have a broader list of graduates, which can mean more contacts for the school to employ for their apprenticeship and job placement programs. A high job placement rate will not only affirm that the school has a good reputation within the industry, but additionally that it has the network of contacts to assist Alvo NE grads acquire apprenticeships or jobs.

Apprenticeship Programs.  Numerous electrician training programs are taught in conjunction with an apprenticeship or an internship program. Those participating trade and vocational programs will help place you in an apprenticeship program inside their network of electrical businesses or trade unions. Check if the schools you are reviewing have working relationships with Alvo NE area electricians or electrical contractors. An apprenticeship not only offers a valuable experience by furnishing practical training, but it also furnishes employment opportunities and helps to establish relationships in the regional electrician professional community.

Modern Facilities.  Confirm that the school facilities and the equipment that you will be instructed on are up-to-date and what you will be using in the field. If you are currently in an internship or an apprenticeship, talk to the electrical technician you are working with regarding what you should be expecting. Otherwise, ask a local Alvo NE electrical company if they can give you some tips. Also bear in mind that unless you are willing to relocate, the school needs to be within commuting distance of your Alvo residence. Take note that if you decide to attend an out-of-state school, in addition to relocation costs there might be higher tuition fees compared to in-state residents.

Smaller Classes.   It’s desirable that you receive as much individualized training as possible, which can be difficult in larger classes. Ask if you can sit in on a couple of the classes so that you can observe how big they are and witness first hand the interaction between instructors and students. Speak to some of the students and get their comments concerning class sizes and instruction. Last, speak with some of the instructors and find out what their level of expertise is and what certifications or degrees they hold.

Flexible Scheduling.  Make sure that the class schedules for the programs you are assessing are flexible enough to fulfill your needs. If you can only attend classes at night or on weekends near Alvo NE, verify that the schools you are comparing offer those options. If you can only attend part-time, make certain that the school you select offers part-time enrollment. Additionally, check out what the protocol is to make-up classes should you miss any because of work, sickness or family issues.
