Electrician Certificate, Diploma and Degree Programs

Belvidere NE electrician on power line poleThere are several ways to receive electrician instruction in a trade or technical school near Belvidere NE. You can enroll in a certificate or diploma program, or earn an Associate Degree. Bachelor’s Degrees are offered at some schools, but are not as prevalent as the first three alternatives. Often these programs are offered combined with an apprenticeship program, which are required by the majority of states in order to become licensed or if you wish to become certified. Bellow are short summaries of the 3 most common programs available.

  • Certificate and Diploma Programs are generally offered by Nebraska technical and trade schools and take about a year to finish. They provide a good foundation and are aimed towards students who wish to enter an apprenticeship more quickly as a journeyman electrician.
  • Associate Degree Programs involve two years to finish and are offered by Nebraska community colleges, commonly as an Associate Degree in Electrical Technology. They furnish a more comprehensive education while providing the foundation that readies students to join their apprenticeship program.

As previously mentioned, Bachelor’s Degrees are offered at some Nebraska colleges, but are less popular at 4 years than the other briefer programs. The majority of states require that an apprenticeship of no less than 2 years and in most cases 4 years be carried out prior to licensing. For that reason, the majority of students are eager to begin their paid apprenticeship, especially if it’s not part of their academic program.

The exams usually evaluate electrical theory and general knowledge, in addition to knowledge of the National Electrical Code (NEC). Receiving certification is also an optional means for an electrician to differentiate him or herself as a experienced and skilled professional. The certifications offered differ by state and can be obtained in many specialties, such as cable splicing as an example. The certification procedure in most cases involves 3 levels of proficiency:

High Completion and Placement Rates.  Ask the electrician schools you are reviewing what their completion rates are. The completion rate is the percentage or portion of students who enroll in and finish the course. A low completion rate may suggest that students were disappointed with the program and dropped out. It may also mean that the instructors were not competent to instruct the students. It’s also important that the schools have high job placement rates. Older and/or more reputable schools may have a broader list of graduates, which may mean more contacts for the school to utilize for their apprenticeship and job placement programs. A high job placement rate will not only affirm that the school has a good reputation within the industry, but also that it has the network of contacts to help Belvidere NE students acquire apprenticeships or employment.

Modern Facilities.  Confirm that the school facilities and the tools that you will be trained on are up-to-date and what you will be using on the job. If you are already in an internship or an apprenticeship, talk to the electrical tech you are working under regarding what you should be expecting. If not, ask a local Belvidere NE electrical contractor if they can provide some pointers. Also keep in mind that unless you are able to relocate, the school must be within commuting distance of your Belvidere residence. Remember that if you decide to enroll in an out-of-state school, in addition to moving costs there might be increased tuition fees compared to in-state residents.

Smaller Classes.   It’s important that you receive as much personalized training as possible, which can be challenging in larger classes. Ask if you can monitor a couple of the classes so that you can see how big they are and witness first hand the interaction between instructors and students. Talk with some of the students and get their opinions relating to class sizes and instruction. Finally, talk with some of the instructors and learn what their level of experience is and what certifications or degrees they have earned.

Flexible Scheduling.  Confirm that the class schedules for the programs you are evaluating are flexible enough to fulfill your needs. If you are only able to go to classes in the evening or on weekends near Belvidere NE, verify that the schools you are looking at provide those options. If you can only attend part-time, be sure that the school you select offers part-time enrollment.
