Also critical are the reputations of the schools, their accreditation, in addition to their job placement and graduation rates. Electrician Certificate, Diploma and Degree Options

Bennington NE electrician on power line poleThere are several options to get electrician instruction in a trade or technical school near Bennington NE. You may enroll in a certificate or diploma program, or earn an Associate Degree. Bachelor’s Degrees are obtainable at some schools, but are not as common as the other three alternatives. Often these programs are offered combined with an apprenticeship program, which are required by most states in order to be licensed or if you intend to earn certification. Following are brief summaries of the 3 most typical programs available.

  • Certificate and Diploma Programs are generally offered by Nebraska vocational and trade schools and take approximately a year to complete. They furnish a good foundation and are aimed towards individuals who wish to enter an apprenticeship more quickly as a journeyman electrician.
  • Associate Degrees take 2 years to complete and are offered by Nebraska community colleges, commonly as an Associate Degree in Electrical Technology. They furnish a more extensive education while supplying the foundation that readies students to begin their apprenticeship program.

As earlier mentioned, Bachelor’s Degrees are accessible at some Nebraska colleges, but are less popular at 4 years than the other shorter programs. Many states mandate that an apprenticeship of no less than 2 years and in most cases four years be completed prior to licensing. Because of that, most students are eager to start their paid apprenticeship, especially if it’s not part of their educational program.

Electrician Certification and Licensing Guidelines

Bennington NE electrician wiring boxElectricians in Bennington NE can perform a multitude of duties, such as testing, installing and replacing electrical systems, and ensuring that the wiring in buildings and homes are up to code standards. After completing an apprenticeship, journeyman electricians are mandated to be licensed in the majority of states or municipalities. The length of apprenticeship differs by state, but typically around 4 to 5 years of practical experience is needed in order to take the licensing exam. The exams usually evaluate electrical theory and general knowledge, along with understanding of the National Electrical Code (NEC). Obtaining certification is also an optional means for an electrician to distinguish him or herself as a skilled and experienced professional. The certifications available differ by state and may be obtained in several specialties, including cable splicing as an example. The certification procedure in most cases includes three levels of competency:

  • An experience requirement
  • Passing a written exam
  • Passing a practical exam

Examples of certifying organizations include the National Joint Apprenticeship and Training Committee (NJATC) as well as the National Institute for Certification in Engineering Technologies (NICET). It’s imperative that the electrician tech school that you pick not only provides a solid educational foundation, but also helps ready you for passing any certification and licensing exams that you might be required to pass in the future.

Enrolling in Electrician Training Classes Online

Bennington NE student attending electrician school onlineAn option that you may have looked at is selecting an electrician online program to earn a degree or a certificate. Even though online schools are becoming more popular as a way of attending class without needing to travel, in this instance they are not completely internet based. Just about all electrician training programs require partial attendance on campus to receive practical hands-on training. But since the remainder of the classes can be attended online, internet learning can be a more convenient choice for individuals that have minimal time for schooling. And as a bonus numerous online schools have a lower tuition cost compared to their on-campus counterparts. Commuting expenses from Bennington NE are also lessened and some of the study materials may be accessed on line as well. Each of these advantages can make online electrician tech schools more affordable and accessible. And many are fully accredited, which we will deal with in our due diligence checklist.

Points to Ask Electrician Trade Schools

Questions to ask Bennington NE electrician schoolsOnce you have made a decision to earn a diploma, certificate or degree, you can start to focus your training options. Since there are numerous electrician vocational and trade schools in the Bennington NE area, it’s important to have a checklist of qualifications that each program must meet. The initial two that we mentioned were location and the cost of tuition. If you have an interest in earning an online degree, then that must be an option that your chosen school offers. And even though all three qualifiers may be critical when making your determination, there are other variables that must be taken into account also. Following is a checklist of those additional qualifications that you will need to analyze prior to selecting an electrical vocational school.

Accreditation.  Many electrician trade schools have acquired either a regional or a national accreditation. They can acquire Institutional Accreditation, which focuses on the school’s programs as a whole, or Programmatic Accreditation, which relates to a specific program, such as electrical technology. Make certain that the Bennington NE program and school are accredited by a U.S. Department of Education acknowledged accrediting organization, for instance the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology. In addition to helping guarantee that you get an excellent education, it can help in securing financial assistance or student loans, which are frequently unavailable for non-accredited schools. Additionally, a number of states require that the electrician training course be accredited for it to qualify for licensing.

High Completion and Placement Rates.  Ask the electrician schools you are looking at what their completion rates are. The completion rate is the percentage or portion of students who enroll in and finish the course. A low completion rate might signify that students were dissatisfied with the program and quit. It could also mean that the teachers were not competent to train the students. It’s also important that the schools have higher job placement rates. Older and/or more reputable schools may have a more extensive directory of graduates, which may result in more contacts for the school to employ for their apprenticeship and job placement programs. A high job placement rate can not only confirm that the school has an excellent reputation within the industry, but also that it has the network of contacts to help Bennington NE grads secure apprenticeships or employment.

Apprenticeship Programs.  A large number of electrician technical programs are taught along with an internship or an apprenticeship program. Those participating vocational and trade programs will help place you in an apprenticeship program inside their network of electrician contractors or labor unions. Find out if the schools you are comparing have working partnerships with Bennington NE area electricians or electrical professionals. An apprenticeship not only provides a valuable experience by providing hands-on training, but it also provides employment opportunities and helps to establish relationships in the regional electrician professional community.

Modern Facilities.  Confirm that the campus facilities and the equipment that you will be trained on are up-to-date and what you will be working with in the field. If you are currently in an internship or an apprenticeship, talk to the electrical technician you are working with concerning what you should be looking for. Otherwise, ask a local Bennington NE electrical contractor if they can give you some tips. Also bear in mind that unless you are willing to move, the school needs to be within commuting distance of your Bennington residence. Take note that if you decide to enroll in an out-of-state school, besides the added relocation costs there may be increased tuition charges compared to in-state residents.

Smaller Classes.   It’s important that you get as much personalized instruction as possible, which can be challenging in larger classes. Ask if you can sit in on a couple of the classes so that you can see how big they are and experience the interaction between teachers and students. Speak with several of the students and get their opinions concerning class sizes and instruction. Last, talk with a few of the teachers and find out what their level of experience is and what degrees or certifications they have earned.

Flexible Scheduling.  Confirm that the class schedules for the schools you are evaluating are flexible enough to handle your needs. If you can only go to classes in the evening or on weekends near Bennington NE, verify that the schools you are reviewing offer those options. If you can only attend part-time, make sure that the school you select offers part-time enrollment. Finally, find out what the protocol is to make-up classes should you miss any because of work, sickness or family issues.
