But with so many vocational schools to select from, just how do you tackle making sure that you enroll in the ideal one? Especially since there are a number of factors to examine. For example, many prospective students will start by searching for schools that are close to their home. Once they have identified a few that are within commuting range, they will decide on the one with the most affordable tuition. While location and cost are of importance, they are not the sole things that must be considered. Also important are the accreditation and reputations of the schools, as well as their graduation and job placement rates. These and other qualifications should influence your final judgment when picking an electrician school. We will discuss that checklist in greater detail later in this article. Electrician Degree, Diploma and Certificate Options

Sun Valley NV electrician on power line poleThere are three general approaches to get electrician training in a vocational or trade school near Sun Valley NV. You can enroll in a diploma or certificate program, or earn an Associate Degree. Bachelor’s Degrees are offered at a few schools, but are not as prevalent as the first three options. Often these programs are made available combined with an apprenticeship, which are required by the majority of states in order to be licensed or if you would like to become certified. Bellow are brief summaries of the 3 most prevalent programs available.

  • Diploma and Certificate Programs are typically offered by Nevada vocational and trade schools and require approximately a year to complete. They provide a solid foundation and are aimed towards students who would like to enter an apprenticeship more quickly as a journeyman electrician.
  • Associate Degree Programs require 2 years to finish and are offered by Nevada junior or community colleges, usually as an Associate Degree in Electrical Technology. They provide a more extensive education while providing the foundation that prepares students to enter into their apprenticeship program.

As earlier stated, Bachelor’s Degrees are accessible at some Nevada colleges, but are less popular at 4 years than the other briefer programs. Many states mandate that an apprenticeship of no less than 2 years and in most cases four years be carried out before licensing. Because of that, the majority of students are eager to start their paid apprenticeship, especially if it’s not part of their academic program.

Electrician License and Certification Criteria

Sun Valley NV electrician wiring boxElectricians in Sun Valley NV can carry out a multitude of duties, including testing, installing and replacing electrical systems, and making sure that the wiring in houses and buildings are up to code standards. After concluding an apprenticeship, journeyman electricians are mandated to become licensed in the majority of states or municipalities. The period of apprenticeship varies by state, but usually around four to five years of prior experience is called for before taking the licensing exam. The exams typically test electrical theory and general knowledge, as well as understanding of the National Electrical Code (NEC). Obtaining certification is also a voluntary way for an electrician to identify him or herself as a experienced and skilled professional. The certifications offered vary by state and may be earned in various specialties, including cable splicing as an example. The certification procedure in most cases involves 3 levels of competency:

  • An experience requirement
  • Passing a written exam
  • Passing a practical exam

Examples of certifying agencies include the National Joint Apprenticeship and Training Committee (NJATC) and also the National Institute for Certification in Engineering Technologies (NICET). It’s crucial that the electrician trade school that you enroll in not only provides a solid academic foundation, but also helps ready you for passing any certification and licensing exams that you may need to pass in the future.

Enrolling in Electrician Online Programs

Although online schools are becoming more prevalent as a means of attending class without needing to travel, in this case they are not completely internet based. Just about all electrician schools require some attendance on campus to get practical hands-on training. But since the rest of the classes may be accessed online, distance learning might be a more convenient choice for individuals that have limited time for education. And as a bonus many online training programs have a reduced tuition cost compared to their on campus competitors. Travelling expenses from Sun Valley NV are also lessened and some of the study materials can be available online as well. All of these advantages can make electrician online tech schools more economical and accessible. And many are fully accredited, which we will address in our due diligence checklist.

Questions to Ask Electrician Trade Schools

Questions to ask Sun Valley NV electrician schoolsOnce you have made a decision to obtain a diploma, certificate or degree, you can begin to refine your school options. Since there are so many electrician trade and vocational schools in the Sun Valley NV area, it’s imperative to have a checklist of criteria that each program must meet. The first 2 that we mentioned were location and tuition expense. If you have an interest in earning an online degree, then that must be an option that your chosen school offers. And although all three qualifiers may be critical when making your selection, there are additional factors that must be considered as well. Following is a checklist of those added qualifiers that you will need to research prior to selecting an electrical trade school.

Accreditation.  Numerous electrician trade programs have earned either a regional or a national accreditation. They may receive Institutional Accreditation, which involves the school’s programs overall, or Programmatic Accreditation, which relates to an individual program, such as electrical technology. Make sure that the Sun Valley NV school is accredited by a U.S. Department of Education acknowledged accrediting organization, for example the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology. In addition to helping guarantee that you get an excellent education, it may help in acquiring financial assistance or student loans, which are frequently unavailable for non-accredited schools. Furthermore, a number of states require that the electrician training program be accredited for it to qualify for licensing.

High Completion and Placement Rates.  Ask the electrician training programs you are looking at what their completion rates are. The completion rate is the portion or percentage of students who enroll in and complete the course. A lower completion rate might suggest that students were dissatisfied with the program and dropped out. It could also suggest that the instructors were not competent to train the students. It’s also essential that the schools have high job placement rates. Older and/or more reputable schools may have a more extensive directory of graduates, which may result in more contacts for the school to use for their apprenticeship and job placement programs. A high job placement rate will not only affirm that the school has a good reputation within the field, but additionally that it has the network of contacts to assist Sun Valley NV graduates acquire apprenticeships or jobs.

Apprenticeship Programs.  A large number of electrician trade programs are taught in conjunction with an internship or an apprenticeship program. Those participating trade and vocational schools will help place you in an apprenticeship program within their network of electrical contractors or labor unions. Check if the schools you are reviewing have referring relationships with Sun Valley NV area electricians or electrical contractors. An apprenticeship not only provides a rewarding experience by supplying practical training, but it also provides employment opportunities and helps to establish relationships in the regional electrician professional community.

Modern Facilities.  Make sure that the campus facilities and the tools that you will be instructed on are state-of-the-art and what you will be working with on the job. If you are currently in an internship or an apprenticeship, check with the electrical tech you are working with regarding what you should be looking for. Otherwise, ask a local Sun Valley NV electrical contractor if they can give you some suggestions. Also keep in mind that unless you are willing to move, the school needs to be within commuting distance of your Sun Valley residence. Remember that if you decide to enroll in an out-of-state school, besides the added relocation costs there can be higher tuition charges compared to in-state residents.

Smaller Classes.   It’s important that you get as much personalized instruction as possible, which can be challenging in larger classes. Ask if you can monitor a few of the classes so that you can observe how large they are and experience the interaction between students and instructors. Talk to several of the students and get their comments relating to class sizes and instruction. Finally, speak to a few of the teachers and find out what their level of experience is and what certifications or degrees they have earned.

Flexible Scheduling.  Make sure that the class schedules for the programs you are assessing are flexible enough to handle your needs. If you are only able to go to classes in the evening or on weekends near Sun Valley NV, check that the programs you are considering provide those options. If you can only attend on a part-time basis, make certain that the school you select allows part-time enrollment. Also, find out what the protocol is to make-up classes should you miss any due to work, sickness or family responsibilities.
