Electrician Degree, Certificate and Diploma Programs

Ewan NJ electrician on power line poleThere are three general approaches to receive electrician instruction in a technical or vocational school near Ewan NJ. You may enroll in a certificate or diploma program, or obtain an Associate Degree. Bachelor’s Degrees are obtainable at certain schools, but are not as common as the first three options. Often these programs are made available combined with an apprenticeship program, which are mandated by the majority of states to be licensed or if you would like to become certified. Following are brief descriptions of the 3 most typical programs available.

  • Certificate and Diploma Programs are generally offered by New Jersey technical and trade schools and take approximately a year to complete. They provide a solid foundation and are aimed towards students who wish to join an apprenticeship faster as a journeyman electrician.
  • Associate Degrees involve 2 years to finish and are offered by New Jersey junior or community colleges, commonly as an Associate Degree in Electrical Technology. They provide a more comprehensive education while providing the foundation that readies students to enter into their apprenticeship program.

As previously stated, Bachelor’s Degrees are available at some New Jersey institutions, but are less preferred at 4 years than the other shorter programs. Most states require that an apprenticeship of at least 2 years and more typically 4 years be performed before licensing. For that reason, most students are eager to begin their paid apprenticeship, especially if it’s not a component of their educational program.

Electrician License and Certification Prerequisites

Ewan NJ electrician wiring boxElectricians in Ewan NJ can undertake a vast array of functions, such as installing, replacing and testing electrical systems, and ensuring that the wiring in houses and buildings comply with code standards. After completing an apprenticeship, journeyman electricians are mandated to become licensed in most municipalities and states. The duration of apprenticeship varies by state, but generally around four to five years of practical experience is required in order to take the licensing exam. The exams commonly assess electrical theory and general knowledge, in addition to understanding of the National Electrical Code (NEC). Obtaining certification is also an optional way for an electrician to differentiate him or herself as a experienced and skilled professional. The certifications available differ by state and can be obtained in numerous specialties, including cable splicing as an example. The certification procedure usually includes 3 levels of proficiency:

  • An experience requirement
  • Passing a written exam
  • Passing a practical exam

Examples of certifying organizations include the National Joint Apprenticeship and Training Committee (NJATC) as well as the National Institute for Certification in Engineering Technologies (NICET). It’s imperative that the electrician trade school that you pick not only delivers a strong educational foundation, but also helps ready you for passing any licensing and certification examinations that you may be required to take in the future.

But since the remainder of the classes can be accessed online, internet learning may be a more convenient choice for students that have limited time for education. And as an added benefit many online training programs have a lower tuition cost compared to their traditional alternatives. Travelling costs from Ewan NJ are also reduced and a portion of the study materials can be available online as well. Each of these advantages can make electrician online vocational schools more economical and accessible. And many are fully accredited, which we will deal with in our questions to ask checklist.

Questions to Ask Electrician Tech Schools

Questions to ask Ewan NJ electrician schoolsOnce you have decided to obtain a certificate, diploma or degree, you can begin to focus your school options. Because there are numerous electrician vocational and trade schools in the Ewan NJ region, it’s important to have a checklist of qualifications that each program must meet. The initial two that we mentioned were location and the cost of tuition. If you have an interest in earning an online degree, then that needs to be an option that your final school offers. And although all three qualifiers may be critical when making your determination, there are additional variables that need to be taken into account also. Following is a checklist of those additional qualifiers that you will need to research before selecting an electrical vocational school.

Accreditation.  Many electrician trade programs have received either a regional or a national accreditation. They can acquire Institutional Accreditation, which involves the school’s programs as a whole, or Programmatic Accreditation, which pertains to an individual program, for instance electrical technology. Make certain that the Ewan NJ school is accredited by a U.S. Department of Education recognized accrediting organization, for example the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology. Along with helping guarantee that you get an excellent education, it may help in obtaining financial assistance or student loans, which are frequently unavailable for non-accredited schools. Additionally, many states require that the electrician training program be accredited for it to be approved for licensing.

High Completion and Placement Rates.  Ask the electrician schools you are looking at what their completion rates are. The completion rate is the portion or percentage of students who enroll in and complete the program. A low completion rate could indicate that students were unhappy with the program and dropped out. It could also suggest that the instructors were not qualified to instruct the students. It’s also imperative that the schools have higher job placement rates. Older and/or more reputable schools may have a broader directory of alumni, which can result in more contacts for the school to employ for their apprenticeship and job placement programs. A high job placement rate can not only validate that the school has a good reputation within the industry, but additionally that it has the network of contacts to help Ewan NJ graduates secure apprenticeships or jobs.

Apprenticeship Programs.  Numerous electrician training programs are taught along with an apprenticeship or an internship program. Those participating trade and technical programs will help place you in an apprenticeship program inside their network of electrical companies or labor unions. Find out if the schools you are reviewing have working relationships with Ewan NJ area electricians or electrical professionals. An apprenticeship not only provides a valuable experience by furnishing practical training, but it also furnishes job opportunities and helps to build relationships in the regional electrician professional community.

Modern Facilities.  Confirm that the campus facilities and the equipment that you will be trained on are state-of-the-art and what you will be using on the job. If you are already in an internship or an apprenticeship, talk to the electrical tech you are working under regarding what you should be expecting. Otherwise, ask a local Ewan NJ electrical contractor if they can give you some suggestions. Additionally keep in mind that unless you can relocate, the school must be within driving distance of your Ewan home. Take note that if you decide to enroll in an out-of-state school, besides the added relocation costs there may be higher tuition fees compared to in-state residents.

Smaller Classes.   It’s important that you receive as much individualized training as possible, which can be challenging in bigger classes. Ask if you can monitor some of the classes so that you can see how big they are and witness first hand the interaction between students and instructors. Speak with some of the students and get their opinions regarding class sizes and instruction. Last, speak with a few of the instructors and learn what their level of experience is and what certifications or degrees they have earned.

Flexible Scheduling.  Verify that the class schedules for the programs you are evaluating are flexible enough to fulfill your needs. If you are only able to go to classes at night or on weekends near Ewan NJ, confirm that the schools you are looking at provide those choices. If you can only attend on a part-time basis, make sure that the school you select offers part-time enrollment. Additionally, find out what the policy is to make-up classes should you miss any due to work, sickness or family emergencies.
