Lincoln Park NJ electrician working on circuit boardThe initial step to becoming an electrical tradesman or contractor is finding an electrician trade school near Lincoln Park NJ. But with so many vocational schools to pick from, just how do you tackle making sure that you enroll in the ideal one? Especially because there are a number of points to evaluate. For example, some potential students will commence by looking for schools that are nearby their home. When they have found several that are within commuting range, they will pick the one with the least expensive tuition. While location and cost are of importance, they are not the only qualifications that must be examined. Also critical are the accreditation and reputations of the schools, as well as their job placement and graduation rates. These and other qualifiers should help mold your final decision when picking an electrician training school. We will address that checklist in greater detail later in this post. Electrician Degree, Certificate and Diploma Programs

Lincoln Park NJ electrician on power line poleThere are three general options to receive electrician training in a vocational or trade school near Lincoln Park NJ. You can choose a diploma or certificate program, or earn an Associate Degree. Bachelor’s Degrees are obtainable at certain schools, but are not as common as the other three options. In many cases these programs are offered in conjunction with an apprenticeship program, which are required by most states in order to be licensed or if you want to earn certification. Bellow are brief explanations of the 3 most common programs available.

  • Certificate and Diploma Programs are typically offered by New Jersey vocational and trade schools and require approximately a year to finish. They furnish a good foundation and are geared towards those who want to enter an apprenticeship more quickly as a journeyman electrician.
  • Associate Degree Programs require 2 years to finish and are offered by New Jersey junior or community colleges, commonly as an Associate Degree in Electrical Technology. They offer a more well-rounded education while supplying the foundation that prepares students to begin their apprenticeship program.

As earlier mentioned, Bachelor’s Degrees are offered at certain New Jersey institutions, but are less favored at four years than the other briefer programs. Many states require that an apprenticeship of at least 2 years and more typically 4 years be completed before licensing. Therefore, many students are anxious to begin their paid apprenticeship, particularly if it’s not a component of their academic program.

Electrician License and Certification Prerequisites

Lincoln Park NJ electrician wiring boxElectricians in Lincoln Park NJ can perform a vast array of services, such as testing, installing and replacing electrical systems, and ensuring that the wiring in buildings and homes are up to code standards. After finishing an apprenticeship, journeyman electricians are required to become licensed in most municipalities and states. The period of apprenticeship varies by state, but commonly about four to five years of practical experience is required before taking the licensing examination. The exams usually test general knowledge and electrical theory, as well as understanding of the National Electrical Code (NEC). Receiving certification is also an optional way for an electrician to differentiate him or herself as a experienced and skilled professional. The certifications offered differ by state and can be obtained in many specializations, such as cable splicing as an example. The certification procedure usually includes 3 levels of competency:

  • An experience requirement
  • Passing a written exam
  • Passing a practical exam

Examples of certifying organizations include the National Joint Apprenticeship and Training Committee (NJATC) and also the National Institute for Certification in Engineering Technologies (NICET). It’s important that the electrician vocational school that you select not only provides a strong educational foundation, but also helps ready you for passing any certification and licensing examinations that you may need to take in the future.

Although online training programs are becoming more popular as a means of attending class without needing to travel, in this instance they are not completely internet based. But since the rest of the classes can be attended online, internet learning might be a more accommodating alternative for individuals that have minimal time for schooling. And as a bonus numerous online training programs have a lower tuition cost compared to their traditional counterparts. Driving costs from Lincoln Park NJ are also lessened and a portion of the study materials can be accessed online also. Each of these benefits can make online electrician vocational schools more affordable and convenient. And a number are fully accredited, which we will deal with in our questions to ask checklist.

Things to Ask Electrician Trade Schools

Questions to ask Lincoln Park NJ electrician schoolsWhen you have made a decision to obtain a certificate, diploma or degree, you can start to focus your training options. Because there are numerous electrician trade and vocational schools in the Lincoln Park NJ region, it’s important to have a checklist of criteria that each program must meet. The initial 2 that we talked about were location and the cost of tuition. If you are interested in earning an degree online, then that must be a feature that your final school offers. And while all three qualifiers may be important when making your selection, there are other variables that need to be taken into account as well. Following is a checklist of those added qualifications that you will need to research before enrolling in an electrical technical school.

Accreditation.  Many electrician vocational schools have earned either a regional or a national accreditation. They can acquire Institutional Accreditation, which involves the school’s programs as a whole, or Programmatic Accreditation, which pertains to a specific program, such as electrical technology. Make certain that the Lincoln Park NJ school and program are accredited by a U.S. Department of Education acknowledged accrediting agency, which includes the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology. In addition to helping guarantee that you receive a quality education, it can assist in obtaining financial assistance or student loans, which are frequently not available for non-accredited programs. Also, some states mandate that the electrician training course be accredited for it to qualify for licensing.

High Completion and Placement Rates.  Ask the electrician schools you are considering what their completion rates are. The completion rate is the percentage of students who enroll in and finish the program. A low completion rate might signify that students were disappointed with the course and quit. It might also signify that the instructors were not competent to instruct the students. It’s similarly essential that the schools have higher job placement rates. Older and/or more reputable schools may have a broader list of graduates, which may mean more contacts for the school to employ for their apprenticeship and job placement programs. A high job placement rate will not only validate that the school has an excellent reputation within the trade, but also that it has the network of contacts to help Lincoln Park NJ graduates secure apprenticeships or jobs.

Apprenticeship Programs.  Many electrician trade programs are taught along with an apprenticeship or an internship program. Those participating technical and vocational schools will help place you in an apprenticeship program within their network of electrician companies or labor unions. Ask if the schools you are reviewing have working relationships with Lincoln Park NJ area electricians or electrical contractors. An apprenticeship not only provides a rewarding experience by providing hands-on training, but it also furnishes job opportunities and helps to build relationships in the area electrician professional community.

Modern Facilities.  Make certain that the school facilities and the equipment that you will be instructed on are state-of-the-art and what you will be working with on the job. If you are presently in an internship or an apprenticeship, check with the electrical specialist you are working under regarding what you should be looking for. If not, ask a local Lincoln Park NJ electrical contracting company if they can give you some tips. Additionally keep in mind that unless you are able to move, the school must be within commuting distance of your Lincoln Park residence. Remember that if you decide to attend an out-of-state school, in addition to relocation costs there may be increased tuition fees compared to in-state residents.

Smaller Classes.   It’s important that you receive as much individualized training as possible, which can be challenging in larger classes. Ask if you can monitor a few of the classes so that you can observe how big they are and witness first hand the interaction between students and instructors. Talk with a few of the students and get their comments concerning class sizes and instruction. Last, talk to some of the instructors and find out what their level of experience is and what degrees or certifications they have earned.

Flexible Scheduling.  Confirm that the class schedules for the schools you are evaluating are flexible enough to meet your needs. If you can only go to classes at night or on weekends near Lincoln Park NJ, confirm that the programs you are considering offer those options. If you can only attend on a part-time basis, make sure that the school you select offers part-time enrollment. Finally, find out what the protocol is to make-up classes should you miss any due to work, illness or family emergencies.

Classroom education should offer a real-world perspective, and the course of study should be up-to-date and conform with industry standards. Each program offers different possibilities for certification also. Probably the best way to research your final list of schools is to visit each campus and speak with the students and faculty.
