Mays Landing NJ electrician working on circuit boardThe first step to learning to be an electrical contractor or tradesman is locating an electrician trade school near Mays Landing NJ. But with so many vocational schools to select from, just how do you go about making certain that you enroll in the best one? Especially because there are so many factors to examine. For example, some students will begin by looking for schools that are nearby their residence. When they have located a few that are within driving distance, they will pick the one with the least expensive tuition. While cost and location are of importance, they are not the sole factors that must be examined. Also critical are the reputations of the schools, their accreditation, as well as their job placement and graduation rates. These and other qualifiers should contribute toward your ultimate judgment when picking an electrician training school. We will discuss that checklist in greater detail later in this post. But to begin with, let’s talk a little bit about becoming an electrician and the training options that are available.

Electrician Degree, Certificate and Diploma Options

Mays Landing NJ electrician on power line poleThere are three general options to get electrician training in a vocational or trade school near Mays Landing NJ. You can enroll in a certificate or diploma program, or earn an Associate Degree. Bachelor’s Degrees are offered at some schools, but are not as prevalent as the other three alternatives. Frequently these programs are made available in conjunction with an apprenticeship program, which are required by most states in order to be licensed or if you intend to become certified. Following are brief descriptions of the three most prevalent programs offered.

  • Diploma and Certificate Programs are usually provided by New Jersey trade and technical schools and require approximately a year to finish. They provide a solid foundation and are geared towards those who wish to join an apprenticeship faster as a journeyman electrician.
  • Associate Degree Programs involve two years to complete and are provided by New Jersey junior or community colleges, typically as an Associate Degree in Electrical Technology. They furnish a more comprehensive education while supplying the foundation that readies students to join their apprenticeship program.

As earlier mentioned, Bachelor’s Degree programs are offered at some New Jersey institutions, but are less popular at 4 years than the other briefer programs. The majority of states mandate that an apprenticeship of at least 2 years and in most cases four years be completed prior to licensing. Therefore, the majority of students are anxious to begin their paid apprenticeship, especially if it’s not part of their educational program.

Electrician Licensing and Certification Prerequisites

Mays Landing NJ electrician wiring boxElectricians in Mays Landing NJ can carry out a wide range of functions, including testing, installing and replacing electrical systems, and making sure that the wiring in buildings and homes are up to code standards. After finishing an apprenticeship, journeyman electricians are required to be licensed in the majority of states or municipalities. The length of apprenticeship varies by state, but typically about 4 to 5 years of experience is called for before taking the licensing examination. The exams usually evaluate electrical theory and general knowledge, along with knowledge of the National Electrical Code (NEC). Receiving certification is also an optional means for an electrician to distinguish him or herself as a experienced and skilled professional. The certifications available differ by state and may be acquired in various specialties, such as cable splicing as an example. The certification process in most cases entails three levels of proficiency:

  • An experience requirement
  • Passing a written exam
  • Passing a practical exam

Examples of certifying agencies include the National Joint Apprenticeship and Training Committee (NJATC) and also the National Institute for Certification in Engineering Technologies (NICET). It’s crucial that the electrician trade school that you pick not only furnishes a strong educational foundation, but also helps ready you for passing any licensing and certification exams that you may be required to take in the future.

Attending Electrician Online Programs

Mays Landing NJ student attending electrician school onlineA possibility that you might have looked at is enrolling in an electrician online program to earn a certificate or degree. Even though online schools have become more accepted as a way of attending class without needing to travel, in this case they are not entirely internet based. Just about all electrician training programs require partial attendance on campus to receive practical hands-on training. But since the balance of the classes can be accessed online, distance learning may be a more accommodating alternative for individuals that have limited time for schooling. And as an added benefit many online training programs have a reduced tuition cost compared to their on-campus competitors. Commuting expenses from Mays Landing NJ are also lessened and some of the study materials may be accessed on line also. Each of these advantages can make electrician online trade schools more affordable and convenient. And many are fully accredited, which we will address in our questions to ask checklist.

What to Ask Electrician Tech Schools

Questions to ask Mays Landing NJ electrician schoolsWhen you have made a decision to obtain a diploma, certificate or degree, you can start to narrow down your training options. Because there are numerous electrician tech and trade schools in the Mays Landing NJ area, it’s important to have a checklist of criteria that each program must satisfy. The first 2 that we talked about were location and tuition expense. If you are interested in earning an online degree, then that needs to be a feature that your chosen school offers. And while all three qualifiers may be crucial when making your selection, there are other variables that need to be taken into account also. Following is a checklist of those additional qualifiers that you will need to research prior to selecting an electrical tech school.

Accreditation.  Many electrician technical programs have acquired either a regional or a national accreditation. They can receive Institutional Accreditation, which focuses on the school’s programs as a whole, or Programmatic Accreditation, which relates to an individual program, for instance electrical technology. Make certain that the Mays Landing NJ program is accredited by a U.S. Department of Education acknowledged accrediting organization, for instance the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology. Along with helping guarantee that you receive a quality education, it may assist in securing financial assistance or student loans, which are in many cases not available for non-accredited schools. Furthermore, some states require that the electrician training course be accredited for it to qualify for licensing.

High Completion and Placement Rates.  Ask the electrician schools you are reviewing what their completion rates are. The completion rate is the percentage of students who enroll in and complete the course. A lower completion rate could indicate that students were disappointed with the course and dropped out. It may also mean that the instructors were not competent to train the students. It’s similarly imperative that the schools have high job placement rates. Older and/or more reputable schools may have a more extensive list of graduates, which can mean more contacts for the school to utilize for their apprenticeship and job placement programs. A high job placement rate will not only affirm that the school has an excellent reputation within the trade, but also that it has the network of contacts to help Mays Landing NJ students obtain apprenticeships or jobs.

Apprenticeship Programs.  Most electrician vocational programs are taught along with an apprenticeship or an internship program. Those participating vocational and technical schools will help place you in an apprenticeship program within their network of electrician businesses or labor unions. Find out if the schools you are comparing have working partnerships with Mays Landing NJ area electricians or electrical specialists. An apprenticeship not only offers a rewarding experience by furnishing hands-on training, but it also supplies employment opportunities and helps to form relationships in the regional electrician professional community.

Modern Facilities.  Make certain that the school facilities and the equipment that you will be instructed on are up-to-date and what you will be using in the field. If you are currently in an internship or an apprenticeship, consult with the electrical specialist you are working under concerning what you should be expecting. If not, ask a local Mays Landing NJ electrical company if they can give you some tips. Also keep in mind that unless you are willing to move, the school needs to be within driving distance of your Mays Landing residence. Remember that if you decide to attend an out-of-state school, besides the added relocation costs there might be higher tuition charges compared to in-state residents.

Smaller Classes.   It’s important that you get as much individualized training as possible, which can be challenging in bigger classes. Ask if you can monitor some of the classes so that you can observe how large they are and experience the interaction between teachers and students. Talk to several of the students and get their comments regarding class sizes and instruction. Last, speak to a few of the teachers and find out what their level of experience is and what certifications or degrees they hold.

Flexible Scheduling.  Verify that the class schedules for the programs you are reviewing are flexible enough to meet your needs. If you are only able to attend classes at night or on weekends near Mays Landing NJ, check that the schools you are considering provide those choices. If you can only attend on a part-time basis, make sure that the school you select permits part-time enrollment. Additionally, ask what the policy is to make-up classes should you miss any because of work, sickness or family emergencies.

It’s a prerequisite that any electrical training program that you are considering includes a considerable amount of hands-on training. Classes need to be small in size and every student must have their personal equipment to train with. Classroom instruction should offer a real-world context, and the course of study should be up-to-date and conform with industry standards. Courses vary in length and the type of credential provided, so you will need to decide what length of program and certificate or degree will best satisfy your needs. Each program provides different possibilities for certification also. Perhaps The ideal means to research your final list of schools is to visit each campus and talk with the faculty and students.
