You may choose a diploma or certificate program, or receive an Associate Degree. Bachelor’s Degrees are available at some schools, but are not as prevalent as the first three alternatives. Frequently these programs are offered together with an apprenticeship program, which are required by most states to be licensed or if you intend to become certified. Following are brief summaries of the 3 most typical programs available.

  • Certificate and Diploma Programs are usually provided by New Mexico trade and technical schools and take approximately a year to finish. They provide a good foundation and are aimed towards students who would like to get into an apprenticeship more quickly as a journeyman electrician.
  • Associate Degree Programs require 2 years to finish and are provided by New Mexico junior or community colleges, commonly as an Associate Degree in Electrical Technology. They furnish a more well-rounded education while providing the foundation that readies students to join their apprenticeship program.

As previously mentioned, Bachelor’s Degrees are accessible at certain New Mexico institutions, but are less favored at 4 years than the other briefer programs. Most states mandate that an apprenticeship of no less than 2 years and in most cases four years be carried out prior to licensing. Because of that, most students are eager to start their paid apprenticeship, particularly if it’s not a component of their academic program.
