But with numerous technical schools to pick from, just how do you approach making sure that you enroll in the best one? Especially because there are a number of variables to consider. For example, many prospective students will start by looking for schools that are nearby their residence. Once they have located a few that are within commuting range, they will select the one with the cheapest tuition. While location and cost are of importance, they are not the sole things that must be evaluated. Also important are the reputations of the schools, their accreditation, along with their job placement and graduation rates. These and other qualifiers should help mold your ultimate judgment when choosing an electrician trade school. We will cover that checklist in more detail later in this article. Electrician Diploma, Certificate and Degree Programs

Babylon NY electrician on power line poleThere are several options to obtain electrician instruction in a technical or vocational school near Babylon NY. You can choose a certificate or diploma program, or earn an Associate Degree. Bachelor’s Degrees are available at some schools, but are not as common as the first three alternatives. In many cases these programs are offered in conjunction with an apprenticeship program, which are mandated by the majority of states to become licensed or if you would like to become certified. Following are brief explanations of the 3 most typical programs available.

  • Certificate and Diploma Programs are generally provided by New York vocational and trade schools and require approximately a year to finish. They furnish a solid foundation and are aimed towards those who want to join an apprenticeship faster as a journeyman electrician.
  • Associate Degree Programs involve 2 years to finish and are offered by New York community colleges, typically as an Associate Degree in Electrical Technology. They offer a more well-rounded education while providing the foundation that prepares students to join their apprenticeship program.

As earlier mentioned, Bachelor’s Degrees are accessible at certain New York colleges, but are less favored at 4 years than the other shorter programs. Most states mandate that an apprenticeship of at least 2 years and more typically four years be completed before licensing. Therefore, the majority of students are eager to begin their paid apprenticeship, particularly if it’s not a component of their academic program.

Electrician License and Certification Prerequisites

Babylon NY electrician wiring boxElectricians in Babylon NY can carry out a vast array of tasks, such as installing, replacing and testing electrical systems, and making sure that the wiring in houses and buildings are up to code standards. After finishing an apprenticeship, journeyman electricians are required to be licensed in most municipalities and states. The duration of apprenticeship differs by state, but typically around 4 to 5 years of experience is required before taking the licensing exam. The exams usually evaluate electrical theory and general knowledge, as well as knowledge of the National Electrical Code (NEC). Receiving certification is also an optional way for an electrician to identify her or himself as a experienced and skilled professional. The certifications available differ by state and can be acquired in various specialties, including cable splicing as an example. The certification process in most cases involves three levels of proficiency:

  • An experience requirement
  • Passing a written exam
  • Passing a practical exam

Examples of certifying organizations include the National Joint Apprenticeship and Training Committee (NJATC) and also the National Institute for Certification in Engineering Technologies (NICET). It’s important that the electrician vocational school that you select not only provides a strong academic foundation, but also helps ready you for passing any licensing and certification exams that you may need to pass in the future.

Babylon NY student attending electrician school onlineAn alternative that you might have considered is selecting an electrician online school to earn a certificate or degree. Even though online training programs are becoming more prevalent as a way of attending class without the need for travel, in this situation they are not completely internet based. Pretty much all electrician training programs require some attendance on-campus to receive practical hands-on training. But since the balance of the classes can be attended online, internet learning can be a more convenient option for individuals that have limited time for education. And as an added benefit many online training programs have a reduced tuition cost compared to their on campus counterparts. Driving expenses from Babylon NY are also minimized and a portion of the study materials may be available online as well. All of these benefits can make electrician online trade schools more affordable and convenient. And a number are fully accredited, which we will cover in our due diligence checklist.

Questions to Ask Electrician Vocational Schools

Questions to ask Babylon NY electrician schoolsNow that you have made a decision to earn a certificate, diploma or degree, you can start to narrow down your training options. Since there are so many electrician trade and vocational schools in the Babylon NY area, it’s important to have a checklist of criteria that each school must satisfy. The first 2 that we mentioned were location and tuition expense. If you have an interest in earning an degree online, then that must be a feature that your final school offers. And while all three qualifiers may be critical when making your determination, there are other variables that must be considered as well. Following is a checklist of those additional qualifiers that you will need to research prior to selecting an electrical trade school.

Accreditation.  Many electrician vocational schools have earned either a regional or a national accreditation. They may attain Institutional Accreditation, which focuses on the school’s programs as a whole, or Programmatic Accreditation, which relates to an individual program, for example electrical technology. Make certain that the Babylon NY school is accredited by a U.S. Department of Education approved accrediting organization, such as the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology. Along with helping guarantee that you receive a quality education, it can assist in obtaining financial assistance or student loans, which are in many cases unavailable for non-accredited schools. Also, some states require that the electrician training course be accredited in order to qualify for licensing.

High Completion and Placement Rates.  Ask the electrician schools you are reviewing what their completion rates are. The completion rate is the portion or percentage of students who enroll in and finish the program. A lower completion rate may signify that students were disappointed with the program and quit. It could also mean that the teachers were not qualified to train the students. It’s also essential that the schools have higher job placement rates. Older and/or more reputable schools may have a broader directory of alumni, which can produce more contacts for the school to employ for their apprenticeship and job placement programs. A high job placement rate will not only confirm that the school has a good reputation within the field, but also that it has the network of contacts to help Babylon NY grads secure apprenticeships or employment.

Apprenticeship Programs.  A large number of electrician training programs are taught together with an apprenticeship or an internship program. Those participating technical and vocational programs will help place you in an apprenticeship program within their network of electrical contractors or labor unions. Check if the schools you are reviewing have referring partnerships with Babylon NY area electricians or electrical companies. An apprenticeship not only provides a valuable experience by providing practical training, but it also supplies job opportunities and helps to form relationships in the local electrician professional community.

Modern Facilities.  Confirm that the campus facilities and the equipment that you will be trained on are up-to-date and what you will be using in the field. If you are already in an internship or an apprenticeship, consult with the electrical technician you are working under regarding what you should be looking for. Otherwise, ask a local Babylon NY electrical company if they can provide some tips. Also bear in mind that unless you are willing to move, the school must be within driving distance of your Babylon residence. Take note that if you decide to enroll in an out-of-state school, besides the added moving costs there may be higher tuition fees compared to in-state residents.

Smaller Classes.   It’s important that you get as much individualized instruction as possible, which can be challenging in bigger classes. Ask if you can sit in on a few of the classes so that you can observe how big they are and experience the interaction between students and teachers. Talk to a few of the students and get their opinions concerning class sizes and instruction. Finally, speak with some of the instructors and find out what their level of experience is and what degrees or certifications they have earned.

Flexible Scheduling.  Confirm that the class schedules for the schools you are reviewing are flexible enough to handle your needs. If you can only go to classes in the evening or on weekends near Babylon NY, verify that the schools you are considering offer those options. If you can only attend part-time, make certain that the school you select permits part-time enrollment. Finally, check out what the protocol is to make-up classes should you miss any due to work, illness or family issues.

Classroom education needs to provide a real-world perspective, and the course of study should be up-to-date and in-line with industry standards. Courses vary in duration and the type of credential offered, so you will need to determine what length of program and degree or certificate will best fulfill your needs. Each program offers different possibilities for certification as well. Perhaps The ideal way to research your final list of schools is to visit each campus and speak with the students and faculty.
