Electrician Degree, Certificate and Diploma Programs

Callicoon NY electrician on power line poleThere are multiple ways to obtain electrician instruction in a vocational or trade school near Callicoon NY. You may enroll in a diploma or certificate program, or earn an Associate Degree. Bachelor’s Degrees are obtainable at certain schools, but are not as common as the other three alternatives. In many cases these programs are made available together with an apprenticeship, which are mandated by the majority of states to become licensed or if you want to earn certification. Bellow are brief summaries of the three most common programs offered.

  • Diploma and Certificate Programs are usually offered by New York technical and trade schools and take approximately a year to finish. They provide a good foundation and are geared towards those who would like to enter an apprenticeship faster as a journeyman electrician.
  • Associate Degrees take two years to finish and are provided by New York community colleges, commonly as an Associate Degree in Electrical Technology. They provide a more well-rounded education while providing the foundation that readies students to enter into their apprenticeship program.

As earlier stated, Bachelor’s Degrees are available at some New York institutions, but are less favored at four years than the other shorter programs. Many states require that an apprenticeship of no less than 2 years and in most cases 4 years be performed before licensing. For that reason, the majority of students are anxious to commence their paid apprenticeship, particularly if it’s not part of their academic program.

Electrician Certification and Licensing Criteria

After completing an apprenticeship, journeyman electricians are required to become licensed in the majority of states or municipalities. The period of apprenticeship differs by state, but commonly about 4 to 5 years of experience is called for in order to take the licensing exam. The exams commonly assess electrical theory and general knowledge, as well as knowledge of the National Electrical Code (NEC). Receiving certification is also an optional means for an electrician to distinguish her or himself as a experienced and skilled professional. The certifications available differ by state and may be obtained in several specializations, such as cable splicing as an example. The certification procedure in most cases entails three levels of competency:

  • An experience requirement
  • Passing a written exam
  • Passing a practical exam

Examples of certifying organizations include the National Joint Apprenticeship and Training Committee (NJATC) and also the National Institute for Certification in Engineering Technologies (NICET). It’s imperative that the electrician tech school that you select not only furnishes a solid educational foundation, but also helps prep you for passing any certification and licensing examinations that you might be required to take in the future.

Older and/or more reputable schools may have a broader list of graduates, which may result in more contacts for the school to use for their apprenticeship and job placement programs. A high job placement rate can not only affirm that the school has an excellent reputation within the field, but additionally that it has the network of contacts to assist Callicoon NY students acquire apprenticeships or employment.

If not, ask a local Callicoon NY electrical contracting company if they can provide some suggestions. Additionally bear in mind that unless you are willing to move, the school must be within driving distance of your Callicoon residence. Take note that if you decide to enroll in an out-of-state school, besides the added relocation costs there might be higher tuition charges compared to in-state residents.

Smaller Classes.   It’s important that you receive as much individualized instruction as possible, which can be difficult in bigger classes. Ask if you can sit in on a few of the classes so that you can observe how big they are and witness first hand the interaction between teachers and students. Speak with several of the students and get their comments regarding class sizes and instruction. Last, speak to some of the teachers and learn what their level of expertise is and what degrees or certifications they hold.

Flexible Scheduling.  Verify that the class schedules for the schools you are reviewing are flexible enough to meet your needs.
