Electrician Degree, Diploma and Certificate Programs

Dexter NY electrician on power line poleThere are multiple options to get electrician instruction in a technical or vocational school near Dexter NY. You can enroll in a certificate or diploma program, or receive an Associate Degree. Bachelor’s Degrees are offered at certain schools, but are not as common as the other three options. Frequently these programs are made available together with an apprenticeship program, which are mandated by the majority of states in order to become licensed or if you would like to become certified. Following are short summaries of the 3 most prevalent programs offered.

  • Certificate and Diploma Programs are usually provided by New York vocational and trade schools and take approximately a year to finish. They provide a solid foundation and are geared towards those who wish to enter an apprenticeship faster as a journeyman electrician.
  • Associate Degrees require 2 years to complete and are offered by New York junior or community colleges, commonly as an Associate Degree in Electrical Technology. They provide a more comprehensive education while providing the foundation that readies students to begin their apprenticeship program.

As previously stated, Bachelor’s Degree programs are offered at certain New York institutions, but are less popular at 4 years than the other briefer programs. Most states mandate that an apprenticeship of at least 2 years and in most cases 4 years be completed before licensing. Because of that, most students are anxious to begin their paid apprenticeship, especially if it’s not part of their academic program.

The length of apprenticeship varies by state, but typically around 4 to 5 years of experience is required in order to take the licensing examination. The exams typically assess general knowledge and electrical theory, along with understanding of the National Electrical Code (NEC). Obtaining certification is also an optional means for an electrician to identify her or himself as a skilled and experienced professional. The certifications available vary by state and may be earned in numerous specializations, such as cable splicing as an example. The certification procedure in most cases includes three levels of competency:

  • An experience requirement
  • Passing a written exam
  • Passing a practical exam

Examples of certifying agencies include the National Joint Apprenticeship and Training Committee (NJATC) and also the National Institute for Certification in Engineering Technologies (NICET). It’s important that the electrician tech school that you choose not only furnishes a strong educational foundation, but also helps ready you for passing any certification and licensing exams that you may need to pass in the future.

Older and/or more reputable schools may have a more extensive list of alumni, which may produce more contacts for the school to employ for their apprenticeship and job placement programs. Otherwise, ask a local Dexter NY electrical contractor if they can provide some suggestions. Also bear in mind that unless you are able to move, the school needs to be within commuting distance of your Dexter home. Take note that if you decide to enroll in an out-of-state school, besides the added relocation costs there can be increased tuition fees compared to in-state residents.

Smaller Classes.   It’s important that you receive as much individualized instruction as possible, which can be difficult in bigger classes. Ask if you can monitor a few of the classes so that you can see how big they are and experience the interaction between instructors and students. Speak with a few of the students and get their opinions relating to class sizes and instruction. Finally, speak to some of the instructors and learn what their level of experience is and what degrees or certifications they have earned.

Flexible Scheduling.  Confirm that the class schedules for the programs you are assessing are flexible enough to handle your needs. If you can only attend classes in the evening or on weekends near Dexter NY, confirm that the programs you are considering offer those options.
