Electrician Diploma, Certificate and Degree Options

Frankfort NY electrician on power line poleThere are multiple options to obtain electrician training in a technical or vocational school near Frankfort NY. You can enroll in a certificate or diploma program, or receive an Associate Degree. Bachelor’s Degrees are obtainable at some schools, but are not as prevalent as the first three options. In many cases these programs are made available in conjunction with an apprenticeship, which are required by the majority of states in order to become licensed or if you intend to become certified. Following are short descriptions of the 3 most typical programs available.

  • Certificate and Diploma Programs are usually offered by New York vocational and trade schools and require approximately a year to complete. They provide a solid foundation and are geared towards students who would like to get into an apprenticeship faster as a journeyman electrician.
  • Associate Degrees take two years to complete and are provided by New York junior or community colleges, commonly as an Associate Degree in Electrical Technology. They provide a more well-rounded education while providing the foundation that readies students to join their apprenticeship program.

As earlier stated, Bachelor’s Degrees are available at certain New York institutions, but are less preferred at 4 years than the other briefer programs. The majority of states mandate that an apprenticeship of at least 2 years and in most cases 4 years be completed prior to licensing. Because of that, many students are eager to commence their paid apprenticeship, especially if it’s not part of their academic program.

Electrician Licensing and Certification Requirements

Frankfort NY electrician wiring boxElectricians in Frankfort NY can perform a multitude of functions, such as installing, replacing and testing electrical systems, and making sure that the wiring in buildings and homes are up to code standards. After completing an apprenticeship, journeyman electricians are mandated to be licensed in most states or municipalities. The duration of apprenticeship varies by state, but typically about 4 to 5 years of practical experience is called for in order to take the licensing examination. The exams usually assess general knowledge and electrical theory, along with knowledge of the National Electrical Code (NEC). Obtaining certification is also an optional way for an electrician to distinguish her or himself as a skilled and experienced professional. The certifications offered vary by state and may be obtained in many specialties, such as cable splicing as an example. The certification process usually involves three levels of proficiency:

  • An experience requirement
  • Passing a written exam
  • Passing a practical exam

Examples of certifying agencies include the National Joint Apprenticeship and Training Committee (NJATC) along with the National Institute for Certification in Engineering Technologies (NICET). It’s important that the electrician trade school that you choose not only furnishes a strong educational foundation, but also helps prep you for passing any licensing and certification examinations that you may need to pass in the future.

Attending Electrician Training Classes Online

Frankfort NY student attending electrician school onlineAn option that you might have contemplated is enrolling in an online electrician program to earn a certificate or degree. While online schools are becoming more accepted as a means of attending class without the need for travel, in this situation they are not completely internet based. Just about all electrician training programs require partial attendance on campus to obtain hands-on practical training. But since the balance of the classes can be accessed online, internet learning might be a more practical option for students that have limited time for schooling. And as a bonus many online training programs have a cheaper tuition cost compared to their traditional competitors. Travelling expenses from Frankfort NY are also lessened and a portion of the study materials can be available online as well. All of these advantages can make online electrician tech schools more affordable and convenient. And many are fully accredited, which we will discuss in our questions to ask checklist.

Questions to Ask Electrician Tech Schools

Questions to ask Frankfort NY electrician schoolsWhen you have made a decision to obtain a diploma, certificate or degree, you can start to refine your training options. Since there are numerous electrician vocational and trade schools in the Frankfort NY region, it’s imperative to have a checklist of qualifications that each program must satisfy. The initial 2 that we talked about were location and tuition expense. If you are interested in earning an degree online, then that needs to be an option that your chosen school offers. And even though all three qualifiers may be critical when making your decision, there are additional variables that need to be considered also. Below is a checklist of those added qualifications that you will need to assess before enrolling in an electrical technical school.

Accreditation.  Many electrician trade schools have acquired either a regional or a national accreditation. They can earn Institutional Accreditation, which focuses on the school’s programs as a whole, or Programmatic Accreditation, which relates to an individual program, such as electrical technology. Confirm that the Frankfort NY school is accredited by a U.S. Department of Education approved accrediting organization, for example the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology. Along with helping ensure that you get an excellent education, it may help in acquiring financial assistance or student loans, which are often unavailable for non-accredited schools. Furthermore, some states require that the electrician training course be accredited for it to be approved for licensing.

High Completion and Placement Rates.  Ask the electrician schools you are reviewing what their completion rates are. The completion rate is the percentage of students who enroll in and finish the program. A lower completion rate could suggest that students were disappointed with the program and dropped out. It may also suggest that the teachers were not competent to train the students. It’s also important that the schools have high job placement rates. Older and/or more reputable schools may have a more extensive directory of alumni, which may result in more contacts for the school to use for their apprenticeship and job placement programs. A high job placement rate can not only affirm that the school has a good reputation within the field, but also that it has the network of contacts to help Frankfort NY graduates secure apprenticeships or employment.

Apprenticeship Programs.  Most electrician trade programs are taught in conjunction with an apprenticeship or an internship program. Those participating trade and vocational schools will help place you in an apprenticeship program inside their network of electrical companies or labor unions. Check if the schools you are considering have referring partnerships with Frankfort NY area electricians or electrical professionals. An apprenticeship not only offers a valuable experience by providing hands-on training, but it also provides employment opportunities and helps to form relationships in the local electrician professional community.

Modern Facilities.  Confirm that the school facilities and the equipment that you will be instructed on are up-to-date and what you will be working with in the field. If you are presently in an internship or an apprenticeship, consult with the electrical technician you are working under regarding what you should be looking for. Otherwise, ask a local Frankfort NY electrical company if they can give you some pointers. Also bear in mind that unless you are willing to move, the school must be within driving distance of your Frankfort residence. Remember that if you decide to enroll in an out-of-state school, in addition to relocation costs there might be increased tuition fees compared to in-state residents.

Smaller Classes.   It’s important that you get as much personalized instruction as possible, which can be challenging in larger classes. Ask if you can monitor a couple of the classes so that you can observe how large they are and experience the interaction between students and instructors. Speak with a few of the students and get their feedback concerning class sizes and instruction. Last, speak to some of the teachers and find out what their level of expertise is and what degrees or certifications they have earned.

Flexible Scheduling.  Make sure that the class schedules for the programs you are reviewing are flexible enough to fulfill your needs. If you are only able to attend classes at night or on weekends near Frankfort NY, verify that the programs you are comparing offer those options. If you can only attend part-time, make certain that the school you select allows part-time enrollment. Additionally, ask what the policy is to make-up classes should you miss any due to work, sickness or family emergencies.

    Frankfort (town), New York

Frankfort is a town in Herkimer County, New York, United States. The town is named after one of its earliest settlers, Lawrence (Lewis) Frank.[3] The town of Frankfort includes a village, also called Frankfort. Frankfort is located east of Utica, and the Erie Canal passes along its north border. At the time of the 2010 census, the population was 7,636.[4]

The first European settlers in this area were German Palatines who came to the colony as religious refugees in 1723. During the French and Indian War, this area suffered fierce attacks by the French with their Indian allies, and the settlers abandoned much of the area. The area of the early town was resettled before 1794, by the granting of land patents.[citation needed]

After the Revolutionary War, the town of Frankfort was established from part of the town of German Flatts. In 1798, the northwest part of Frankfort was taken away to form part of the town of Deerfield.
