Electrician Degree, Diploma and Certificate Programs

Hudson Falls NY electrician on power line poleThere are several options to obtain electrician instruction in a technical or vocational school near Hudson Falls NY. You may select a certificate or diploma program, or earn an Associate Degree. Bachelor’s Degrees are available at a few schools, but are not as prevalent as the first three options. Frequently these programs are made available in conjunction with an apprenticeship, which are required by the majority of states to become licensed or if you wish to earn certification. Following are brief descriptions of the 3 most common programs offered.

  • Certificate and Diploma Programs are typically provided by New York vocational and trade schools and take about a year to finish. They provide a solid foundation and are geared towards those who would like to join an apprenticeship faster as a journeyman electrician.
  • Associate Degree Programs require two years to complete and are offered by New York junior or community colleges, commonly as an Associate Degree in Electrical Technology. They provide a more extensive education while providing the foundation that prepares students to enter into their apprenticeship program.

As earlier stated, Bachelor’s Degrees are available at certain New York colleges, but are less preferred at 4 years than the other shorter programs. Many states mandate that an apprenticeship of no less than 2 years and in most cases 4 years be completed before licensing. Therefore, the majority of students are eager to commence their paid apprenticeship, especially if it’s not a component of their academic program.

Electrician Licensing and Certification Requirements

Hudson Falls NY electrician wiring boxElectricians in Hudson Falls NY can undertake a vast array of duties, including testing, installing and replacing electrical systems, and ensuring that the wiring in buildings and homes comply with code standards. After completing an apprenticeship, journeyman electricians are mandated to become licensed in the majority of states or municipalities. The period of apprenticeship varies by state, but usually about four to five years of practical experience is needed in order to take the licensing exam. The exams commonly test general knowledge and electrical theory, as well as knowledge of the National Electrical Code (NEC). Obtaining certification is also a voluntary method for an electrician to differentiate her or himself as a skilled and experienced professional. The certifications offered vary by state and can be acquired in several specialties, such as cable splicing as an example. The certification procedure usually entails 3 levels of competency:

  • An experience requirement
  • Passing a written exam
  • Passing a practical exam

Examples of certifying agencies include the National Joint Apprenticeship and Training Committee (NJATC) and also the National Institute for Certification in Engineering Technologies (NICET). It’s crucial that the electrician vocational school that you choose not only provides a solid academic foundation, but also helps ready you for passing any licensing and certification examinations that you might need to pass in the future.

Attending Electrician Online Programs

Hudson Falls NY student attending electrician school onlineA possibility that you may have considered is enrolling in an online electrician program to earn a certificate or degree. Even though online training programs are becoming more prevalent as a way of attending class without needing to travel, in this situation they are not entirely internet based. Just about all electrician schools require some attendance on campus to receive practical hands-on training. But since the remainder of the classes can be attended online, distance learning might be a more convenient alternative for individuals that have minimal time for schooling. And as an added benefit many online schools have a cheaper tuition cost compared to their traditional competitors. Driving costs from Hudson Falls NY are also lessened and a portion of the study materials may be available online as well. Each of these advantages can make online electrician tech schools more economical and convenient. And many are fully accredited, which we will address in our questions to ask checklist.

Topics to Ask Electrician Training Schools

Questions to ask Hudson Falls NY electrician schoolsWhen you have decided to earn a diploma, certificate or degree, you can start to refine your school options. Since there are so many electrician tech and trade schools in the Hudson Falls NY area, it’s important to have a checklist of criteria that each program must meet. The initial two that we talked about were location and the cost of tuition. If you have an interest in earning an online degree, then that needs to be an option that your chosen school offers. And while all three qualifiers may be critical when making your determination, there are additional variables that must be considered as well. Below is a checklist of those added qualifiers that you will need to assess prior to selecting an electrical technical school.

Accreditation.  Numerous electrician trade schools have received either a regional or a national accreditation. They can receive Institutional Accreditation, which involves the school’s programs as a whole, or Programmatic Accreditation, which pertains to a specific program, for instance electrical technology. Confirm that the Hudson Falls NY program is accredited by a U.S. Department of Education approved accrediting organization, for example the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology. Along with helping ensure that you acquire a quality education, it may help in obtaining financial aid or student loans, which are frequently unavailable for non-accredited programs. Furthermore, a number of states mandate that the electrician training program be accredited for it to qualify for licensing.

High Completion and Placement Rates.  Ask the electrician training programs you are reviewing what their completion rates are. The completion rate is the percentage of students who enroll in and finish the program. A low completion rate may signify that students were disappointed with the course and quit. It could also mean that the teachers were not qualified to train the students. It’s also imperative that the schools have high job placement rates. Older and/or more reputable schools may have a more extensive directory of alumni, which can produce more contacts for the school to utilize for their apprenticeship and job placement programs. A high job placement rate will not only confirm that the school has an excellent reputation within the trade, but additionally that it has the network of contacts to help Hudson Falls NY grads acquire apprenticeships or employment.

Apprenticeship Programs.  Numerous electrician vocational programs are taught together with an apprenticeship or an internship program. Those participating vocational and trade schools will help place you in an apprenticeship program inside their network of electrician contractors or labor unions. Find out if the schools you are reviewing have referring relationships with Hudson Falls NY area electricians or electrical professionals. An apprenticeship not only offers a valuable experience by providing practical training, but it also supplies employment opportunities and helps to build relationships in the local electrician professional community.

Modern Facilities.  Confirm that the campus facilities and the equipment that you will be trained on are up-to-date and what you will be using in the field. If you are already in an internship or an apprenticeship, consult with the electrical tech you are working under concerning what you should be expecting. If not, ask a local Hudson Falls NY electrical contractor if they can provide some tips. Also bear in mind that unless you can move, the school must be within driving distance of your Hudson Falls home. Take note that if you decide to attend an out-of-state school, besides the added relocation costs there may be increased tuition fees compared to in-state residents.

Smaller Classes.   It’s important that you get as much personalized training as possible, which can be difficult in larger classes. Ask if you can sit in on a few of the classes so that you can see how large they are and experience the interaction between teachers and students. Talk to some of the students and get their feedback concerning class sizes and instruction. Finally, talk with a few of the instructors and find out what their level of expertise is and what degrees or certifications they hold.

Flexible Scheduling.  Make sure that the class schedules for the schools you are assessing are flexible enough to meet your needs. If you can only go to classes in the evening or on weekends near Hudson Falls NY, confirm that the programs you are considering offer those options. If you can only attend part-time, make certain that the school you select permits part-time enrollment. Finally, find out what the protocol is to make-up classes should you miss any due to work, sickness or family emergencies.

Classroom education should provide a real-world frame of reference, and the course of study should be up-to-date and in-line with industry standards. Training programs differ in length and the kind of credential offered, so you will have to ascertain what length of program and certificate or degree will best satisfy your needs. Every training program provides unique options for certification also. Probably the best approach to research your short list of schools is to check out each campus and talk with the students and instructors. Invest some time to attend some classes. Hudson Falls, New York

Hudson Falls is a village located in Washington County, New York, USA. The village is in the southwest of the town of Kingsbury, on US Route 4. Hudson Falls is part of the Glens Falls Metropolitan Statistical Area.[3] As of the 2000 census, the village had a population of 6,927.[1] It was the county seat of Washington County until 1994, when the county seat was moved to Fort Edward.[4][5]

In 1764, Albert Baker built Kingsbury's first sawmill near what is known today as Baker's Falls. As early as 1792, the area of Kingsbury near Baker's Falls was referred to as Sandy Hill. In 1810, the hamlet incorporated as a village, keeping the name Sandy Hill. Its boundaries expanded to their current limits in the 1840s.

Stone quarried in Hudson Falls was used to construct the Bennington Battle Monument (1889) and the Brooklyn Bridge. The former site of the quarry has been redeveloped for use by the Washington-Saratoga-Warren-Hamilton-Essex Board of Cooperative Educational Services. The Glens Falls Feeder Canal runs though the village.
