Electrician Diploma, Certificate and Degree Programs

Moriches NY electrician on power line poleThere are three general ways to obtain electrician training in a technical or vocational school near Moriches NY. You can enroll in a diploma or certificate program, or earn an Associate Degree. Bachelor’s Degrees are available at some schools, but are not as prevalent as the first three alternatives. In many cases these programs are offered together with an apprenticeship program, which are required by most states to become licensed or if you intend to earn certification. Following are brief explanations of the 3 most prevalent programs offered.

  • Certificate and Diploma Programs are usually offered by New York trade and technical schools and require about a year to finish. They furnish a solid foundation and are geared towards students who wish to get into an apprenticeship faster as a journeyman electrician.
  • Associate Degree Programs take 2 years to complete and are provided by New York junior or community colleges, typically as an Associate Degree in Electrical Technology. They provide a more extensive education while supplying the foundation that prepares students to join their apprenticeship program.

As earlier mentioned, Bachelor’s Degree programs are available at certain New York institutions, but are less popular at four years than the other briefer programs. The majority of states mandate that an apprenticeship of at least 2 years and more typically four years be carried out before licensing. Because of that, most students are eager to commence their paid apprenticeship, especially if it’s not a component of their academic program.

Electrician Certification and Licensing Prerequisites

Moriches NY electrician wiring boxElectricians in Moriches NY can perform a wide range of functions, including installing, replacing and testing electrical systems, and ensuring that the wiring in buildings and homes are up to code standards. After concluding an apprenticeship, journeyman electricians are mandated to be licensed in the majority of states or municipalities. The length of apprenticeship varies by state, but commonly around 4 to 5 years of experience is called for before taking the licensing examination. The exams usually assess electrical theory and general knowledge, along with knowledge of the National Electrical Code (NEC). Obtaining certification is also a voluntary method for an electrician to identify her or himself as a experienced and skilled professional. The certifications offered differ by state and may be earned in various specialties, such as cable splicing as an example. The certification process usually involves three levels of proficiency:

  • An experience requirement
  • Passing a written exam
  • Passing a practical exam

Examples of certifying agencies include the National Joint Apprenticeship and Training Committee (NJATC) as well as the National Institute for Certification in Engineering Technologies (NICET). It’s important that the electrician vocational school that you choose not only furnishes a strong academic foundation, but also helps prepare you for passing any licensing and certification examinations that you may be required to pass in the future.

Enrolling in Electrician Training Classes Online

Moriches NY student attending electrician school onlineAn alternative that you might have contemplated is selecting an online electrician school to earn a degree or a certificate. Although online schools have become more prevalent as a way of attending class without the need for travel, in this instance they are not completely internet based. Virtually all electrician schools require partial attendance on campus to obtain practical hands-on training. But since the remainder of the classes can be accessed online, internet learning may be a more convenient option for individuals that have limited time for education. And as an added benefit many online schools have a reduced tuition cost compared to their traditional competitors. Commuting expenses from Moriches NY are also lessened and a portion of the study materials may be available online also. All of these advantages can make electrician online trade schools more affordable and accessible. And many are fully accredited, which we will deal with in our due diligence checklist.

Questions to Ask Electrician Technical Schools

Questions to ask Moriches NY electrician schoolsOnce you have decided to earn a certificate, diploma or degree, you can start to refine your school options. Considering that there are so many electrician vocational and trade schools in the Moriches NY region, it’s essential to have a checklist of criteria that each program must satisfy. The first 2 that we talked about were location and tuition expense. If you are interested in earning an degree online, then that needs to be an option that your chosen school offers. And although all three qualifiers may be important when making your decision, there are additional factors that must be considered also. Below is a checklist of those added qualifiers that you will need to research before enrolling in an electrical trade school.

Accreditation.  A large number of electrician trade schools have earned either a regional or a national accreditation. They can earn Institutional Accreditation, which involves the school’s programs overall, or Programmatic Accreditation, which relates to an individual program, such as electrical technology. Make certain that the Moriches NY program is accredited by a U.S. Department of Education approved accrediting organization, for instance the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology. In addition to helping guarantee that you acquire a quality education, it can assist in obtaining financial aid or student loans, which are often not available for non-accredited programs. Additionally, some states mandate that the electrician training program be accredited in order to be approved for licensing.

High Completion and Placement Rates.  Ask the electrician schools you are looking at what their completion rates are. The completion rate is the portion or percentage of students who enroll in and complete the program. A lower completion rate may indicate that students were dissatisfied with the program and quit. It could also signify that the instructors were not competent to train the students. It’s also imperative that the schools have high job placement rates. Older and/or more reputable schools may have a more extensive directory of graduates, which may produce more contacts for the school to employ for their apprenticeship and job placement programs. A high job placement rate can not only confirm that the school has an excellent reputation within the industry, but additionally that it has the network of contacts to help Moriches NY grads secure apprenticeships or employment.

Apprenticeship Programs.  A large number of electrician trade programs are taught along with an apprenticeship or an internship program. Those participating vocational and technical programs will help place you in an apprenticeship program within their network of electrical companies or labor unions. Check if the schools you are considering have referring partnerships with Moriches NY area electricians or electrical specialists. An apprenticeship not only offers a rewarding experience by furnishing hands-on training, but it also supplies job opportunities and helps to build relationships in the area electrician professional community.

Modern Facilities.  Confirm that the school facilities and the equipment that you will be instructed on are state-of-the-art and what you will be working with in the field. If you are presently in an internship or an apprenticeship, consult with the electrical specialist you are working with regarding what you should be looking for. Otherwise, ask a local Moriches NY electrical contractor if they can provide some pointers. Additionally bear in mind that unless you are willing to move, the school needs to be within driving distance of your Moriches home. Take note that if you decide to attend an out-of-state school, in addition to moving costs there might be higher tuition charges compared to in-state residents.

Smaller Classes.   It’s desirable that you get as much personalized training as possible, which can be challenging in bigger classes. Ask if you can sit in on a couple of the classes so that you can observe how large they are and experience the interaction between students and teachers. Talk to several of the students and get their comments concerning class sizes and instruction. Last, talk to a few of the instructors and learn what their level of expertise is and what certifications or degrees they hold.

Flexible Scheduling.  Verify that the class schedules for the schools you are evaluating are flexible enough to handle your needs. If you are only able to go to classes at night or on weekends near Moriches NY, verify that the programs you are comparing provide those choices. If you can only attend part-time, make certain that the school you select offers part-time enrollment. Additionally, ask what the policy is to make-up classes should you miss any due to work, sickness or family responsibilities.
