Electrician Diploma, Certificate and Degree Options

Silver Creek NY electrician on power line poleThere are several ways to receive electrician instruction in a trade or technical school near Silver Creek NY. You may enroll in a certificate or diploma program, or obtain an Associate Degree. Bachelor’s Degrees are obtainable at some schools, but are not as prevalent as the first three options. Often these programs are made available together with an apprenticeship program, which are required by the majority of states to become licensed or if you want to become certified. Bellow are short descriptions of the 3 most prevalent programs available.

  • Diploma and Certificate Programs are typically offered by New York vocational and trade schools and require about a year to complete. They provide a good foundation and are aimed towards individuals who want to get into an apprenticeship more quickly as a journeyman electrician.
  • Associate Degree Programs take two years to finish and are provided by New York junior or community colleges, typically as an Associate Degree in Electrical Technology. They provide a more comprehensive education while supplying the foundation that prepares students to join their apprenticeship program.

As earlier stated, Bachelor’s Degree programs are accessible at certain New York colleges, but are less preferred at 4 years than the other briefer programs. Many states mandate that an apprenticeship of no less than 2 years and more typically four years be performed before licensing. Because of that, most students are eager to start their paid apprenticeship, especially if it’s not part of their educational program.

Electrician Licensing and Certification Requirements

Silver Creek NY electrician wiring boxElectricians in Silver Creek NY can undertake a wide range of tasks, such as installing, replacing and testing electrical systems, and ensuring that the wiring in houses and buildings are up to code standards. After concluding an apprenticeship, journeyman electricians are required to be licensed in the majority of municipalities and states. The period of apprenticeship varies by state, but commonly around four to five years of practical experience is needed before taking the licensing exam. The exams usually evaluate general knowledge and electrical theory, along with understanding of the National Electrical Code (NEC). Obtaining certification is also an optional method for an electrician to differentiate him or herself as a skilled and experienced professional. The certifications offered differ by state and may be earned in numerous specializations, including cable splicing as an example. The certification procedure in most cases entails three levels of competency:

  • An experience requirement
  • Passing a written exam
  • Passing a practical exam

Examples of certifying organizations include the National Joint Apprenticeship and Training Committee (NJATC) as well as the National Institute for Certification in Engineering Technologies (NICET). It’s crucial that the electrician trade school that you select not only furnishes a strong academic foundation, but also helps ready you for passing any certification and licensing exams that you may be required to take in the future.

Enrolling in Electrician Online Programs

Silver Creek NY student attending electrician school onlineAn option that you might have contemplated is enrolling in an electrician online program to earn a degree or a certificate. Although online schools have become more prevalent as a way of attending class without the need for travel, in this case they are not totally internet based. Just about all electrician training programs require some attendance on-campus to obtain practical hands-on training. But since the rest of the classes can be attended online, internet learning may be a more convenient choice for individuals that have minimal time for schooling. And as an added benefit numerous online schools have a lower tuition cost compared to their traditional counterparts. Commuting costs from Silver Creek NY are also reduced and a portion of the study materials may be available online as well. Each of these benefits can make online electrician trade schools more affordable and convenient. And a number are fully accredited, which we will deal with in our questions to ask checklist.

Topics to Ask Electrician Trade Schools

Questions to ask Silver Creek NY electrician schoolsNow that you have decided to earn a diploma, certificate or degree, you can start to narrow down your training options. Because there are numerous electrician tech and trade schools in the Silver Creek NY region, it’s essential to have a checklist of criteria that each school must meet. The initial two that we talked about were location and the cost of tuition. If you are interested in earning an degree online, then that needs to be a feature that your final school offers. And even though all three qualifiers may be important when making your selection, there are other factors that must be considered also. Following is a checklist of those added qualifiers that you will need to assess prior to enrolling in an electrical tech school.

Accreditation.  A large number of electrician technical schools have received either a regional or a national accreditation. They may attain Institutional Accreditation, which focuses on the school’s programs overall, or Programmatic Accreditation, which relates to a specific program, for instance electrical technology. Make sure that the Silver Creek NY program and school are accredited by a U.S. Department of Education recognized accrediting agency, which includes the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology. In addition to helping ensure that you receive a quality education, it can assist in acquiring financial aid or student loans, which are in many cases unavailable for non-accredited schools. Additionally, some states mandate that the electrician training course be accredited for it to qualify for licensing.

High Completion and Placement Rates.  Ask the electrician training programs you are considering what their completion rates are. The completion rate is the percentage of students who enroll in and finish the program. A lower completion rate might signify that students were dissatisfied with the program and quit. It could also indicate that the teachers were not competent to train the students. It’s also essential that the schools have high job placement rates. Older and/or more reputable schools may have a more extensive directory of alumni, which may result in more contacts for the school to use for their apprenticeship and job placement programs. A high job placement rate can not only validate that the school has a good reputation within the industry, but also that it has the network of contacts to help Silver Creek NY students obtain apprenticeships or employment.

Apprenticeship Programs.  A large number of electrician training programs are taught along with an apprenticeship or an internship program. Those participating trade and technical programs will help place you in an apprenticeship program inside their network of electrical businesses or labor unions. Find out if the schools you are comparing have referring relationships with Silver Creek NY area electricians or electrical specialists. An apprenticeship not only provides a rewarding experience by furnishing practical training, but it also furnishes employment opportunities and helps to form relationships in the local electrician professional community.

Modern Facilities.  Make certain that the school facilities and the tools that you will be trained on are up-to-date and what you will be using in the field. If you are already in an internship or an apprenticeship, consult with the electrical technician you are working under concerning what you should be expecting. Otherwise, ask a local Silver Creek NY electrical company if they can provide some pointers. Also keep in mind that unless you can move, the school must be within commuting distance of your Silver Creek home. Take note that if you decide to enroll in an out-of-state school, in addition to relocation costs there may be higher tuition charges compared to in-state residents.

Smaller Classes.   It’s important that you get as much individualized instruction as possible, which can be challenging in larger classes. Ask if you can sit in on a couple of the classes so that you can observe how big they are and experience the interaction between teachers and students. Talk with several of the students and get their comments relating to class sizes and instruction. Last, speak with some of the teachers and find out what their level of expertise is and what degrees or certifications they have earned.

Flexible Scheduling.  Make sure that the class schedules for the schools you are assessing are flexible enough to meet your needs. If you can only attend classes at night or on weekends near Silver Creek NY, check that the programs you are looking at offer those options. If you can only attend part-time, make sure that the school you select permits part-time enrollment. Finally, ask what the policy is to make-up classes should you miss any due to work, sickness or family emergencies.

But as we have discussed in this article, there are several things that you will need to examine and compare between the training programs you are looking at. It’s a prerequisite that any electrical training program that you are assessing includes a good deal of hands-on instruction. Classes need to be smaller in size and each student should have their personal equipment to train with. Classroom education should provide a real-world context, and the training program should be up-to-date and in-line with industry standards. Programs differ in length and the type of credential offered, so you will have to determine what length of program and credential will best fulfill your needs. Every program provides different options for certification also. Probably the best means to research your final list of schools is to visit each campus and talk with the students and faculty. Silver Creek, New York

Silver Creek is a village in the town of Hanover in Chautauqua County, New York, United States. As of the 2010 census, the village had a population of 2,656.[2] Silver Creek is named after a small river which runs through the village. It is on the shore of Lake Erie.

The community was first settled around 1803, and the first school house was erected around 1823. In 1822 a well-known black walnut tree, measuring about 10 feet (3.0 m) in diameter, was blown over in a storm. The village of Silver Creek was incorporated in 1848, and was an important port on Lake Erie until railroads reduced shipping. The village is home to a skew arch railroad bridge, one of the few bridges in the country built on an angle.

Silver Creek's best-known resident was Howard "Bob" Ehmke, the pitching hero of the 1929 World Series. While playing for the Philadelphia Athletics, Ehmke struck out 13 Chicago Cubs in game one, a Series record until 1953. Former NBA and ABA basketball player George Carter is also a graduate of Silver Creek Central High School. Carter played for St. Bonaventure University and later in the 1971 ABA All-Star Game.[3]
