For example, some students will begin by searching for schools that are nearby their home. After they have identified several that are within driving range, they will select the one with the cheapest tuition. Even though location and cost are significant, they are not the only qualifications that should be considered. Also critical are the reputations of the schools, their accreditation, in addition to their graduation and job placement rates. These and other qualifiers should contribute toward your final decision when selecting an electrician school. We will discuss that checklist in greater detail later in this article. Electrician Certificate, Diploma and Degree Programs

Tyrone NY electrician on power line poleThere are three general options to obtain electrician training in a vocational or trade school near Tyrone NY. You can enroll in a diploma or certificate program, or earn an Associate Degree. Bachelor’s Degrees are offered at a few schools, but are not as prevalent as the other three alternatives. In many cases these programs are offered combined with an apprenticeship program, which are required by most states in order to become licensed or if you intend to become certified. Following are short descriptions of the 3 most common programs available.

  • Diploma and Certificate Programs are generally offered by New York trade and technical schools and take approximately a year to complete. They provide a solid foundation and are geared towards individuals who wish to enter an apprenticeship more quickly as a journeyman electrician.
  • Associate Degree Programs involve two years to complete and are offered by New York community colleges, commonly as an Associate Degree in Electrical Technology. They furnish a more comprehensive education while supplying the foundation that prepares students to join their apprenticeship program.

As previously stated, Bachelor’s Degree programs are available at certain New York colleges, but are less preferred at four years than the other shorter programs. Most states require that an apprenticeship of no less than 2 years and in most cases four years be carried out before licensing. For that reason, many students are anxious to begin their paid apprenticeship, especially if it’s not a component of their academic program.

Electrician Certification and Licensing Prerequisites

Tyrone NY electrician wiring boxElectricians in Tyrone NY can perform a multitude of services, including testing, installing and replacing electrical systems, and ensuring that the wiring in buildings and homes are up to code standards. After concluding an apprenticeship, journeyman electricians are mandated to become licensed in the majority of states or municipalities. The duration of apprenticeship differs by state, but normally around four to five years of prior experience is needed in order to take the licensing exam. The exams commonly assess general knowledge and electrical theory, along with understanding of the National Electrical Code (NEC). Obtaining certification is also a voluntary way for an electrician to identify her or himself as a skilled and experienced professional. The certifications offered differ by state and can be obtained in many specializations, including cable splicing as an example. The certification procedure usually includes 3 levels of competency:

  • An experience requirement
  • Passing a written exam
  • Passing a practical exam

Examples of certifying organizations include the National Joint Apprenticeship and Training Committee (NJATC) as well as the National Institute for Certification in Engineering Technologies (NICET). It’s crucial that the electrician trade school that you pick not only furnishes a strong educational foundation, but also helps prep you for passing any licensing and certification exams that you might need to take in the future.

Attending Electrician Programs Online

Tyrone NY student attending electrician school onlineAn option that you may have considered is selecting an electrician online school to earn a certificate or degree. While online training programs have become more popular as a way of attending class without needing to travel, in this situation they are not entirely internet based. Virtually all electrician schools require some attendance on campus to obtain practical hands-on training. But since the remainder of the classes may be accessed online, internet learning might be a more accommodating option for students that have minimal time for schooling. And as a bonus numerous online schools have a lower tuition cost compared to their traditional competitors. Commuting costs from Tyrone NY are also lessened and some of the study materials can be available on line as well. All of these benefits can make online electrician tech schools more economical and convenient. And many are fully accredited, which we will deal with in our due diligence checklist.

Questions to Ask Electrician Trade Schools

Questions to ask Tyrone NY electrician schoolsOnce you have made a decision to obtain a certificate, diploma or degree, you can start to refine your school options. Because there are so many electrician tech and trade schools in the Tyrone NY region, it’s important to have a checklist of criteria that each program must satisfy. The initial two that we discussed were location and the cost of tuition. If you are interested in earning an degree online, then that must be a feature that your chosen school offers. And even though all three qualifiers may be critical when making your determination, there are other factors that need to be taken into account also. Following is a checklist of those additional qualifications that you will need to analyze before selecting an electrical trade school.

Accreditation.  Numerous electrician technical schools have attained either a regional or a national accreditation. They may acquire Institutional Accreditation, which focuses on the school’s programs overall, or Programmatic Accreditation, which relates to a specific program, for instance electrical technology. Confirm that the Tyrone NY program is accredited by a U.S. Department of Education acknowledged accrediting organization, such as the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology. In addition to helping make certain that you get a quality education, it may help in obtaining financial aid or student loans, which are often not available for non-accredited programs. Also, many states mandate that the electrician training program be accredited for it to be approved for licensing.

High Completion and Placement Rates.  Ask the electrician training programs you are considering what their completion rates are. The completion rate is the percentage of students who enroll in and finish the program. A lower completion rate might signify that students were disappointed with the program and dropped out. It may also suggest that the teachers were not qualified to instruct the students. It’s similarly important that the schools have higher job placement rates. Older and/or more reputable schools may have a more extensive list of alumni, which can produce more contacts for the school to employ for their apprenticeship and job placement programs. A high job placement rate can not only affirm that the school has an excellent reputation within the field, but additionally that it has the network of contacts to help Tyrone NY grads obtain apprenticeships or employment.

Apprenticeship Programs.  Numerous electrician technical programs are taught together with an apprenticeship or an internship program. Those participating vocational and technical schools will help place you in an apprenticeship program inside their network of electrical contractors or trade unions. Check if the schools you are comparing have working partnerships with Tyrone NY area electricians or electrical specialists. An apprenticeship not only provides a rewarding experience by furnishing practical training, but it also supplies employment opportunities and helps to build relationships in the area electrician professional community.

Modern Facilities.  Make sure that the campus facilities and the equipment that you will be trained on are up-to-date and what you will be working with in the field. If you are presently in an internship or an apprenticeship, check with the electrical technician you are working with regarding what you should be expecting. If not, ask a local Tyrone NY electrical contractor if they can give you some pointers. Also keep in mind that unless you are able to relocate, the school must be within driving distance of your Tyrone home. Remember that if you decide to attend an out-of-state school, in addition to relocation costs there may be higher tuition charges compared to in-state residents.

Smaller Classes.   It’s important that you get as much one-on-one training as possible, which can be difficult in bigger classes. Ask if you can sit in on a few of the classes so that you can observe how big they are and witness first hand the interaction between students and teachers. Speak with some of the students and get their comments regarding class sizes and instruction. Last, speak to a few of the teachers and find out what their level of experience is and what degrees or certifications they have earned.

Flexible Scheduling.  Verify that the class schedules for the schools you are assessing are flexible enough to meet your needs. If you can only attend classes at night or on weekends near Tyrone NY, confirm that the programs you are considering offer those options. If you can only attend part-time, make sure that the school you select offers part-time enrollment. Additionally, find out what the policy is to make-up classes should you miss any due to work, sickness or family issues.

Classroom teaching should provide a real-world frame of reference, and the training program should be current and in-line with industry standards.
