Hookerton NC electrician working on circuit boardThe initial step to becoming an electrical contractor or tradesman is enrolling in an electrician trade school near Hookerton NC. But with numerous technical schools to pick from, just how do you tackle making sure that you enroll in the right one? Especially because there are a number of variables to examine. For example, some potential students will start by looking for schools that are close to their home. After they have identified a few that are within commuting range, they will pick the one with the cheapest tuition. Although location and cost are significant, they are not the sole things that need to be evaluated. Also critical are the accreditation and reputations of the schools, as well as their job placement and graduation rates. These and other qualifiers should help mold your ultimate judgment when choosing an electrician school. We will discuss that checklist in greater detail later in this post. But to begin with, let’s review a little bit about being an electrician and the training choices that are offered.

Electrician Diploma, Certificate and Degree Options

Hookerton NC electrician on power line poleThere are multiple options to receive electrician instruction in a vocational or trade school near Hookerton NC. You can select a certificate or diploma program, or obtain an Associate Degree. Bachelor’s Degrees are offered at a few schools, but are not as prevalent as the other three alternatives. Frequently these programs are offered in conjunction with an apprenticeship, which are required by the majority of states to be licensed or if you wish to earn certification. Bellow are short explanations of the 3 most prevalent programs available.

  • Certificate and Diploma Programs are generally provided by North Carolina trade and technical schools and require approximately a year to finish. They provide a good foundation and are aimed towards those who would like to join an apprenticeship more quickly as a journeyman electrician.
  • Associate Degree Programs take 2 years to complete and are offered by North Carolina junior or community colleges, commonly as an Associate Degree in Electrical Technology. They provide a more comprehensive education while supplying the foundation that prepares students to join their apprenticeship program.

As earlier mentioned, Bachelor’s Degree programs are accessible at some North Carolina colleges, but are less popular at four years than the other shorter programs. The majority of states mandate that an apprenticeship of no less than 2 years and more typically four years be carried out prior to licensing. For that reason, many students are anxious to start their paid apprenticeship, especially if it’s not part of their academic program.

Electrician License and Certification Criteria

Hookerton NC electrician wiring boxElectricians in Hookerton NC can perform a vast array of services, including testing, installing and replacing electrical systems, and making sure that the wiring in buildings and homes comply with code standards. After finishing an apprenticeship, journeyman electricians are required to become licensed in most states or municipalities. The period of apprenticeship varies by state, but commonly around four to five years of experience is needed before taking the licensing exam. The exams usually evaluate general knowledge and electrical theory, in addition to understanding of the National Electrical Code (NEC). Receiving certification is also an optional way for an electrician to differentiate her or himself as a skilled and experienced professional. The certifications offered differ by state and can be earned in numerous specialties, such as cable splicing as an example. The certification procedure usually includes 3 levels of competency:

  • An experience requirement
  • Passing a written exam
  • Passing a practical exam

Examples of certifying agencies include the National Joint Apprenticeship and Training Committee (NJATC) along with the National Institute for Certification in Engineering Technologies (NICET). It’s imperative that the electrician tech school that you pick not only provides a strong academic foundation, but also helps prep you for passing any certification and licensing exams that you might be required to pass in the future.

Enrolling in Electrician Programs Online

Hookerton NC student attending electrician school onlineAn option that you might have considered is choosing an online electrician program to earn a degree or a certificate. While online schools are becoming more accepted as a way of attending class without needing to travel, in this case they are not completely internet based. Virtually all electrician training programs require some attendance on-campus to receive hands-on practical training. But since the balance of the classes can be accessed online, internet learning can be a more convenient option for students that have minimal time for schooling. And as an added benefit many online degree programs have a lower tuition cost compared to their traditional competitors. Driving costs from Hookerton NC are also reduced and a portion of the study materials can be accessed on line as well. Each of these advantages can make online electrician tech schools more affordable and accessible. And a number are fully accredited, which we will discuss in our due diligence checklist.

Questions to Ask Electrician Technical Schools

Questions to ask Hookerton NC electrician schoolsOnce you have decided to earn a diploma, certificate or degree, you can start to refine your training options. Because there are so many electrician vocational and trade schools in the Hookerton NC region, it’s important to have a checklist of qualifications that each program must meet. The initial two that we discussed were location and the cost of tuition. If you are interested in earning an degree online, then that needs to be a feature that your chosen school offers. And even though all three qualifiers may be critical when making your selection, there are additional factors that must be taken into account also. Following is a checklist of those added qualifiers that you will need to analyze before enrolling in an electrical vocational school.

Accreditation.  Numerous electrician vocational programs have acquired either a regional or a national accreditation. They may acquire Institutional Accreditation, which focuses on the school’s programs overall, or Programmatic Accreditation, which relates to a specific program, such as electrical technology. Confirm that the Hookerton NC program and school are accredited by a U.S. Department of Education recognized accrediting agency, for instance the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology. In addition to helping ensure that you receive a superior education, it can assist in securing financial assistance or student loans, which are frequently unavailable for non-accredited schools. Also, a number of states require that the electrician training course be accredited for it to be approved for licensing.

High Completion and Placement Rates.  Ask the electrician training programs you are reviewing what their completion rates are. The completion rate is the percentage or portion of students who enroll in and finish the course. A lower completion rate might indicate that students were disappointed with the course and quit. It may also mean that the instructors were not qualified to instruct the students. It’s also imperative that the schools have high job placement rates. Older and/or more reputable schools may have a more extensive list of graduates, which can mean more contacts for the school to employ for their apprenticeship and job placement programs. A high job placement rate will not only affirm that the school has an excellent reputation within the industry, but additionally that it has the network of contacts to help Hookerton NC grads acquire apprenticeships or employment.

Apprenticeship Programs.  Many electrician technical programs are taught in conjunction with an internship or an apprenticeship program. Those participating vocational and technical programs will help place you in an apprenticeship program inside their network of electrical contractors or labor unions. Ask if the schools you are comparing have working partnerships with Hookerton NC area electricians or electrical contractors. An apprenticeship not only provides a rewarding experience by supplying practical training, but it also furnishes job opportunities and helps to establish relationships in the regional electrician professional community.

Modern Facilities.  Confirm that the school facilities and the tools that you will be trained on are up-to-date and what you will be working with on the job. If you are presently in an internship or an apprenticeship, consult with the electrical technician you are working under concerning what you should be looking for. Otherwise, ask a local Hookerton NC electrical company if they can give you some tips. Additionally keep in mind that unless you can relocate, the school needs to be within commuting distance of your Hookerton home. Remember that if you decide to attend an out-of-state school, in addition to moving costs there may be increased tuition charges compared to in-state residents.

Smaller Classes.   It’s desirable that you receive as much personalized training as possible, which can be challenging in larger classes. Ask if you can sit in on some of the classes so that you can observe how large they are and witness first hand the interaction between teachers and students. Talk with several of the students and get their feedback regarding class sizes and instruction. Last, speak with some of the instructors and learn what their level of expertise is and what degrees or certifications they hold.

Flexible Scheduling.  Make sure that the class schedules for the schools you are reviewing are flexible enough to handle your needs. If you are only able to go to classes in the evening or on weekends near Hookerton NC, confirm that the schools you are looking at provide those options. If you can only attend on a part-time basis, make sure that the school you select allows part-time enrollment. Additionally, find out what the policy is to make-up classes should you miss any due to work, illness or family responsibilities.

You originally came to this website due to an interest in Electrician School and wanting more information on the topic Electrical Tech Schools. But as we have covered in this article, there are a number of factors that you will need to evaluate and compare among the schools you are looking at. It’s a necessity that any electrical training program that you are reviewing includes a good deal of hands-on instruction. Classes need to be small in size and each student should have their own equipment to train with. Classroom education needs to offer a real-world context, and the training program should be up-to-date and in-line with industry standards. Courses differ in duration and the kind of credential provided, so you will have to decide what length of program and degree or certificate will best fulfill your needs. Each training program provides unique possibilities for certification as well. Perhaps the best approach to research your short list of schools is to check out each campus and talk with the faculty and students. Take the time to attend some classes.
