Lattimore NC electrician working on circuit boardThe first step to learning to be an electrical tradesman or contractor is locating an electrician trade school near Lattimore NC. But with so many technical schools to select from, just how do you tackle making certain that you enroll in the ideal one? Particularly because there are a number of factors to evaluate. For instance, some students will start by looking for schools that are close to their home. When they have located some that are within commuting range, they will choose the one with the cheapest tuition. Although cost and location are significant, they are not the sole qualifications that need to be evaluated. Also important are the accreditation and reputations of the schools, along with their job placement and graduation rates. These and additional qualifications should help mold your final decision when selecting an electrician training school. We will talk about that checklist in more detail later in this post. But to begin with, let’s talk a little bit about being an electrician and the instructional options that are offered.

Electrician Degree, Diploma and Certificate Options

Lattimore NC electrician on power line poleThere are multiple options to obtain electrician instruction in a trade or technical school near Lattimore NC. You can select a certificate or diploma program, or obtain an Associate Degree. Bachelor’s Degrees are available at a few schools, but are not as common as the other three alternatives. Often these programs are made available combined with an apprenticeship, which are mandated by the majority of states in order to become licensed or if you want to become certified. Bellow are brief descriptions of the three most prevalent programs offered.

  • Certificate and Diploma Programs are generally offered by North Carolina technical and trade schools and take about a year to finish. They provide a good foundation and are geared towards those who wish to enter an apprenticeship more quickly as a journeyman electrician.
  • Associate Degrees involve 2 years to complete and are offered by North Carolina community colleges, typically as an Associate Degree in Electrical Technology. They offer a more well-rounded education while supplying the foundation that readies students to begin their apprenticeship program.

As earlier mentioned, Bachelor’s Degrees are offered at certain North Carolina colleges, but are less preferred at 4 years than the other shorter programs. Most states mandate that an apprenticeship of at least 2 years and in most cases 4 years be completed before licensing. Therefore, most students are eager to start their paid apprenticeship, especially if it’s not part of their educational program.

Electrician Certification and Licensing Prerequisites

Lattimore NC electrician wiring boxElectricians in Lattimore NC can undertake a vast array of tasks, such as installing, replacing and testing electrical systems, and ensuring that the wiring in houses and buildings are up to code standards. After finishing an apprenticeship, journeyman electricians are required to be licensed in most municipalities and states. The length of apprenticeship varies by state, but typically about 4 to 5 years of practical experience is called for in order to take the licensing examination. The exams commonly assess electrical theory and general knowledge, as well as understanding of the National Electrical Code (NEC). Receiving certification is also a voluntary method for an electrician to identify her or himself as a experienced and skilled professional. The certifications offered vary by state and may be earned in several specializations, such as cable splicing as an example. The certification procedure usually entails 3 levels of proficiency:

  • An experience requirement
  • Passing a written exam
  • Passing a practical exam

Examples of certifying organizations include the National Joint Apprenticeship and Training Committee (NJATC) and also the National Institute for Certification in Engineering Technologies (NICET). It’s crucial that the electrician vocational school that you choose not only delivers a solid academic foundation, but also helps ready you for passing any licensing and certification exams that you might need to take in the future.

Attending Electrician Schools Online

Lattimore NC student attending electrician school onlineA possibility that you might have considered is selecting an online electrician school to earn a certificate or degree. Although online training programs are becoming more accepted as a means of attending class without needing to travel, in this situation they are not entirely internet based. Virtually all electrician schools require partial attendance on-campus to receive practical hands-on training. But since the balance of the classes can be accessed online, internet learning can be a more practical option for individuals that have limited time for education. And as a bonus many online schools have a lower tuition cost compared to their on-campus competitors. Travelling costs from Lattimore NC are also lessened and some of the study materials can be available on line as well. Each of these benefits can make electrician online trade schools more economical and convenient. And a number are fully accredited, which we will address in our questions to ask checklist.

Questions to Ask Electrician Trade Schools

Questions to ask Lattimore NC electrician schoolsNow that you have decided to earn a diploma, certificate or degree, you can start to refine your training options. Since there are so many electrician trade and vocational schools in the Lattimore NC region, it’s important to have a checklist of criteria that each program must satisfy. The initial 2 that we discussed were location and tuition expense. If you are interested in earning an online degree, then that must be an option that your final school offers. And even though all three qualifiers may be important when making your determination, there are other variables that must be taken into account also. Below is a checklist of those additional qualifiers that you will need to research prior to choosing an electrical trade school.

Accreditation.  A large number of electrician trade schools have earned either a regional or a national accreditation. They may acquire Institutional Accreditation, which involves the school’s programs overall, or Programmatic Accreditation, which relates to an individual program, such as electrical technology. Make certain that the Lattimore NC program and school are accredited by a U.S. Department of Education recognized accrediting organization, for example the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology. Along with helping ensure that you acquire a superior education, it can help in obtaining financial assistance or student loans, which are frequently not available for non-accredited programs. Furthermore, a number of states require that the electrician training course be accredited for it to qualify for licensing.

High Completion and Placement Rates.  Ask the electrician training programs you are looking at what their completion rates are. The completion rate is the percentage or portion of students who enroll in and complete the course. A low completion rate could suggest that students were disappointed with the course and dropped out. It could also mean that the instructors were not qualified to train the students. It’s similarly important that the schools have higher job placement rates. Older and/or more reputable schools may have a broader list of graduates, which can mean more contacts for the school to utilize for their apprenticeship and job placement programs. A high job placement rate will not only confirm that the school has a good reputation within the industry, but additionally that it has the network of contacts to help Lattimore NC students acquire apprenticeships or employment.

Apprenticeship Programs.  Most electrician technical programs are taught along with an apprenticeship or an internship program. Those participating technical and vocational programs will help place you in an apprenticeship program within their network of electrical businesses or trade unions. Find out if the schools you are considering have referring partnerships with Lattimore NC area electricians or electrical professionals. An apprenticeship not only offers a rewarding experience by supplying hands-on training, but it also provides job opportunities and helps to establish relationships in the regional electrician professional community.

Modern Facilities.  Confirm that the campus facilities and the equipment that you will be instructed on are state-of-the-art and what you will be using in the field. If you are currently in an internship or an apprenticeship, consult with the electrical tech you are working with concerning what you should be looking for. Otherwise, ask a local Lattimore NC electrical contracting company if they can provide some tips. Additionally bear in mind that unless you are willing to relocate, the school needs to be within driving distance of your Lattimore residence. Take note that if you decide to attend an out-of-state school, in addition to relocation costs there may be increased tuition charges compared to in-state residents.

Smaller Classes.   It’s desirable that you get as much personalized training as possible, which can be challenging in larger classes. Ask if you can monitor some of the classes so that you can see how large they are and witness first hand the interaction between instructors and students. Talk to several of the students and get their opinions regarding class sizes and instruction. Finally, talk to a few of the teachers and learn what their level of experience is and what degrees or certifications they have earned.

Flexible Scheduling.  Confirm that the class schedules for the programs you are evaluating are flexible enough to fulfill your needs. If you are only able to attend classes in the evening or on weekends near Lattimore NC, check that the programs you are considering provide those choices. If you can only attend part-time, make certain that the school you select offers part-time enrollment. Also, find out what the protocol is to make-up classes should you miss any because of work, sickness or family responsibilities.

Classroom teaching should offer a real-world frame of reference, and the course of study should be current and conform with industry standards. Programs differ in duration and the kind of credential offered, so you will have to ascertain what length of program and degree or certificate will best serve your needs. Every program offers different options for certification also. Perhaps the best means to research your short list of schools is to go to each campus and speak with the students and faculty.
