Electrician Degree, Certificate and Diploma Options

Chagrin Falls OH electrician on power line poleThere are multiple ways to receive electrician training in a vocational or trade school near Chagrin Falls OH. You may choose a diploma or certificate program, or receive an Associate Degree. Bachelor’s Degrees are offered at certain schools, but are not as common as the other three options. In many cases these programs are offered together with an apprenticeship, which are mandated by the majority of states in order to be licensed or if you wish to earn certification. Bellow are short descriptions of the 3 most prevalent programs available.

  • Certificate and Diploma Programs are typically offered by Ohio trade and technical schools and require about a year to complete. They furnish a solid foundation and are aimed towards individuals who want to enter an apprenticeship faster as a journeyman electrician.
  • Associate Degrees require two years to finish and are provided by Ohio community colleges, usually as an Associate Degree in Electrical Technology. They offer a more well-rounded education while providing the foundation that readies students to enter into their apprenticeship program.

As earlier mentioned, Bachelor’s Degree programs are accessible at some Ohio institutions, but are less preferred at four years than the other briefer programs. The majority of states mandate that an apprenticeship of at least 2 years and in most cases four years be performed before licensing. Therefore, the majority of students are eager to begin their paid apprenticeship, particularly if it’s not a component of their academic program.

Electrician License and Certification Guidelines

Chagrin Falls OH electrician wiring boxElectricians in Chagrin Falls OH can perform a wide range of tasks, such as testing, installing and replacing electrical systems, and making sure that the wiring in buildings and homes comply with code standards. After finishing an apprenticeship, journeyman electricians are required to become licensed in most states or municipalities. The length of apprenticeship varies by state, but commonly about four to five years of experience is called for in order to take the licensing exam. The exams commonly assess general knowledge and electrical theory, as well as understanding of the National Electrical Code (NEC). Obtaining certification is also an optional method for an electrician to identify him or herself as a experienced and skilled professional. The certifications available differ by state and may be earned in several specializations, such as cable splicing as an example. The certification process in most cases includes 3 levels of competency:

  • An experience requirement
  • Passing a written exam
  • Passing a practical exam

Examples of certifying organizations include the National Joint Apprenticeship and Training Committee (NJATC) and also the National Institute for Certification in Engineering Technologies (NICET). It’s important that the electrician trade school that you enroll in not only provides a strong educational foundation, but also helps prep you for passing any licensing and certification examinations that you might need to take in the future.

Points to Ask Electrician Vocational Schools

Questions to ask Chagrin Falls OH electrician schoolsWhen you have made a decision to obtain a certificate, diploma or degree, you can begin to focus your school options. Since there are numerous electrician vocational and trade schools in the Chagrin Falls OH region, it’s imperative to have a checklist of qualifications that each school must satisfy. The initial two that we talked about were location and tuition expense. If you have an interest in earning an degree online, then that needs to be a feature that your chosen school offers. And although all three qualifiers may be crucial when making your determination, there are additional variables that need to be taken into account as well. Following is a checklist of those additional qualifications that you will need to assess prior to enrolling in an electrical vocational school.

Accreditation.  A large number of electrician vocational schools have acquired either a regional or a national accreditation. They can acquire Institutional Accreditation, which involves the school’s programs overall, or Programmatic Accreditation, which relates to an individual program, for instance electrical technology. Confirm that the Chagrin Falls OH program and school are accredited by a U.S. Department of Education acknowledged accrediting organization, for example the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology. In addition to helping ensure that you receive a superior education, it may assist in acquiring financial aid or student loans, which are in many cases unavailable for non-accredited programs. Additionally, many states mandate that the electrician training course be accredited for it to qualify for licensing.

High Completion and Placement Rates.  Ask the electrician training programs you are reviewing what their completion rates are. The completion rate is the percentage or portion of students who enroll in and complete the course. A lower completion rate might indicate that students were dissatisfied with the course and dropped out. It might also indicate that the teachers were not competent to train the students. It’s similarly essential that the schools have higher job placement rates. Older and/or more reputable schools may have a more extensive directory of graduates, which can produce more contacts for the school to employ for their apprenticeship and job placement programs. A high job placement rate can not only confirm that the school has a good reputation within the trade, but also that it has the network of contacts to help Chagrin Falls OH graduates acquire apprenticeships or jobs.

Apprenticeship Programs.  Most electrician technical programs are taught together with an apprenticeship or an internship program. Those participating trade and vocational programs will help place you in an apprenticeship program inside their network of electrical contractors or labor unions. Find out if the schools you are considering have working relationships with Chagrin Falls OH area electricians or electrical contractors. An apprenticeship not only provides a valuable experience by supplying practical training, but it also supplies employment opportunities and helps to form relationships in the local electrician professional community.

Modern Facilities.  Make sure that the school facilities and the equipment that you will be trained on are state-of-the-art and what you will be using on the job. If you are already in an internship or an apprenticeship, talk to the electrical technician you are working with concerning what you should be looking for. If not, ask a local Chagrin Falls OH electrical company if they can give you some suggestions. Also keep in mind that unless you can move, the school must be within driving distance of your Chagrin Falls home. Remember that if you decide to attend an out-of-state school, in addition to relocation costs there can be increased tuition fees compared to in-state residents.

Smaller Classes.   It’s important that you receive as much personalized instruction as possible, which can be challenging in larger classes. Ask if you can monitor a few of the classes so that you can observe how big they are and witness first hand the interaction between teachers and students. Talk with a few of the students and get their comments relating to class sizes and instruction. Finally, talk with some of the instructors and find out what their level of experience is and what degrees or certifications they have earned.

Flexible Scheduling.  Confirm that the class schedules for the schools you are evaluating are flexible enough to meet your needs. If you are only able to go to classes at night or on weekends near Chagrin Falls OH, verify that the programs you are considering provide those choices. If you can only attend part-time, make sure that the school you select permits part-time enrollment. Also, ask what the protocol is to make-up classes should you miss any because of work, illness or family issues.
