Navarre OH electrician working on circuit boardThe initial step to learning to be an electrical contractor or tradesman is finding an electrician trade school near Navarre OH. But with so many vocational schools to select from, just how do you go about making certain that you enroll in the ideal one? Especially since there are a number of variables to consider. For example, some students will commence by looking for schools that are nearby their home. Once they have located several that are within driving distance, they will decide on the one with the least expensive tuition. Although location and cost are significant, they are not the sole factors that need to be examined. Also critical are the accreditation and reputations of the schools, as well as their job placement and graduation rates. These and other qualifications should contribute toward your ultimate judgment when picking an electrician trade school. We will talk about that checklist in greater detail later in this article. Electrician Degree, Certificate and Diploma Options

Navarre OH electrician on power line poleThere are several approaches to get electrician training in a technical or vocational school near Navarre OH. You may choose a certificate or diploma program, or earn an Associate Degree. Bachelor’s Degrees are available at certain schools, but are not as common as the other three options. In many cases these programs are offered in conjunction with an apprenticeship program, which are mandated by the majority of states in order to become licensed or if you wish to become certified. Bellow are short descriptions of the three most typical programs available.

  • Certificate and Diploma Programs are typically provided by Ohio technical and trade schools and take approximately a year to finish. They furnish a solid foundation and are aimed towards individuals who wish to join an apprenticeship more quickly as a journeyman electrician.
  • Associate Degree Programs involve 2 years to finish and are offered by Ohio community colleges, usually as an Associate Degree in Electrical Technology. They furnish a more extensive education while supplying the foundation that readies students to join their apprenticeship program.

As earlier mentioned, Bachelor’s Degree programs are accessible at certain Ohio institutions, but are less popular at 4 years than the other shorter programs. Most states mandate that an apprenticeship of at least 2 years and in most cases four years be completed prior to licensing. Because of that, the majority of students are eager to start their paid apprenticeship, especially if it’s not a component of their academic program.

Electrician Licensing and Certification Prerequisites

Navarre OH electrician wiring boxElectricians in Navarre OH can perform a multitude of duties, including testing, installing and replacing electrical systems, and making sure that the wiring in buildings and homes comply with code standards. After concluding an apprenticeship, journeyman electricians are mandated to become licensed in the majority of states or municipalities. The duration of apprenticeship differs by state, but usually about four to five years of prior experience is called for before taking the licensing exam. The exams commonly assess electrical theory and general knowledge, in addition to understanding of the National Electrical Code (NEC). Receiving certification is also a voluntary way for an electrician to differentiate her or himself as a experienced and skilled professional. The certifications offered vary by state and may be obtained in several specialties, including cable splicing as an example. The certification procedure usually includes three levels of competency:

  • An experience requirement
  • Passing a written exam
  • Passing a practical exam

Examples of certifying agencies include the National Joint Apprenticeship and Training Committee (NJATC) as well as the National Institute for Certification in Engineering Technologies (NICET). It’s crucial that the electrician trade school that you pick not only furnishes a strong academic foundation, but also helps prepare you for passing any licensing and certification exams that you might need to pass in the future.

Attending Electrician Online Programs

Navarre OH student attending electrician school onlineAn alternative that you might have considered is enrolling in an online electrician program to earn a certificate or degree. While online training programs are becoming more popular as a means of attending class without needing to travel, in this situation they are not totally internet based. Virtually all electrician schools require partial attendance on campus to obtain practical hands-on training. But since the balance of the classes can be attended online, distance learning might be a more practical alternative for individuals that have minimal time for education. And as an added benefit numerous online degree programs have a lower tuition cost compared to their on-campus alternatives. Travelling expenses from Navarre OH are also lessened and a portion of the study materials may be available online also. Each of these benefits can make electrician online tech schools more economical and convenient. And many are fully accredited, which we will address in our due diligence checklist.

Topics to Ask Electrician Training Schools

Questions to ask Navarre OH electrician schoolsNow that you have decided to obtain a diploma, certificate or degree, you can start to focus your school options. Because there are numerous electrician vocational and trade schools in the Navarre OH area, it’s essential to have a checklist of qualifications that each program must satisfy. The initial two that we mentioned were location and tuition expense. If you have an interest in earning an online degree, then that needs to be a feature that your chosen school offers. And while all three qualifiers may be important when making your decision, there are additional variables that need to be taken into account as well. Below is a checklist of those added qualifications that you will need to assess prior to selecting an electrical tech school.

Accreditation.  A large number of electrician technical programs have acquired either a regional or a national accreditation. They can acquire Institutional Accreditation, which involves the school’s programs as a whole, or Programmatic Accreditation, which relates to an individual program, for instance electrical technology. Verify that the Navarre OH school is accredited by a U.S. Department of Education acknowledged accrediting agency, for example the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology. Along with helping ensure that you obtain a superior education, it may help in securing financial aid or student loans, which are in many cases not available for non-accredited programs. Additionally, many states mandate that the electrician training course be accredited for it to qualify for licensing.

High Completion and Placement Rates.  Ask the electrician training programs you are considering what their completion rates are. The completion rate is the percentage or portion of students who enroll in and complete the course. A lower completion rate might signify that students were unhappy with the program and dropped out. It might also indicate that the teachers were not competent to train the students. It’s similarly essential that the schools have higher job placement rates. Older and/or more reputable schools may have a broader list of alumni, which may mean more contacts for the school to use for their apprenticeship and job placement programs. A high job placement rate will not only affirm that the school has a good reputation within the trade, but additionally that it has the network of contacts to help Navarre OH graduates secure apprenticeships or employment.

Apprenticeship Programs.  Most electrician training programs are taught together with an internship or an apprenticeship program. Those participating trade and vocational schools will help place you in an apprenticeship program within their network of electrician contractors or labor unions. Ask if the schools you are considering have working partnerships with Navarre OH area electricians or electrical companies. An apprenticeship not only provides a rewarding experience by providing hands-on training, but it also furnishes job opportunities and helps to form relationships in the regional electrician professional community.

Modern Facilities.  Make certain that the school facilities and the tools that you will be instructed on are up-to-date and what you will be using on the job. If you are currently in an internship or an apprenticeship, consult with the electrical tech you are working under concerning what you should be looking for. If not, ask a local Navarre OH electrical contractor if they can provide some suggestions. Also keep in mind that unless you are willing to relocate, the school needs to be within commuting distance of your Navarre residence. Take note that if you decide to enroll in an out-of-state school, in addition to moving costs there might be higher tuition charges compared to in-state residents.

Smaller Classes.   It’s desirable that you receive as much one-on-one instruction as possible, which can be difficult in bigger classes. Ask if you can monitor some of the classes so that you can observe how big they are and witness first hand the interaction between students and teachers. Speak to several of the students and get their opinions concerning class sizes and instruction. Last, speak with some of the teachers and find out what their level of expertise is and what degrees or certifications they hold.

Flexible Scheduling.  Make sure that the class schedules for the programs you are assessing are flexible enough to fulfill your needs. If you can only attend classes in the evening or on weekends near Navarre OH, verify that the schools you are looking at offer those choices. If you can only attend on a part-time basis, make certain that the school you select allows part-time enrollment. Additionally, find out what the policy is to make-up classes should you miss any because of work, sickness or family responsibilities.

But as we have covered in this article, there are many factors that you will need to assess and compare among the schools you are reviewing. It’s a necessity that any electrician training program that you are reviewing includes a considerable amount of hands-on training. Classes should be small in size and each student must have their own equipment to train with. Classroom instruction should provide a real-world perspective, and the course of study should be up-to-date and conform with industry standards. Courses differ in duration and the type of credential offered, so you will have to determine what length of program and credential will best satisfy your needs. Each training program offers different possibilities for certification also.
