Orwell OH electrician working on circuit boardThe initial step to becoming an electrical contractor or tradesman is locating an electrician trade school near Orwell OH. But with numerous vocational schools to choose from, just how do you go about making certain that you enroll in the best one? Especially because there are a number of factors to examine. For example, many students will start by looking for schools that are close to their home. When they have found a few that are within commuting distance, they will pick the one with the lowest tuition. While location and cost are significant, they are not the sole factors that must be examined. Also critical are the accreditation and reputations of the schools, in addition to their graduation and job placement rates. These and additional qualifiers should influence your ultimate judgment when picking an electrician trade school. We will address that checklist in more detail later in this post. But first, let’s talk a little bit about becoming an electrician and the training options that are offered.

Electrician Diploma, Certificate and Degree Programs

Orwell OH electrician on power line poleThere are several approaches to obtain electrician instruction in a trade or technical school near Orwell OH. You can select a diploma or certificate program, or earn an Associate Degree. Bachelor’s Degrees are available at a few schools, but are not as prevalent as the other three alternatives. Often these programs are offered together with an apprenticeship, which are mandated by the majority of states to become licensed or if you would like to earn certification. Following are short summaries of the 3 most prevalent programs available.

  • Certificate and Diploma Programs are typically offered by Ohio trade and technical schools and take approximately a year to finish. They provide a good foundation and are geared towards those who would like to get into an apprenticeship faster as a journeyman electrician.
  • Associate Degrees require two years to complete and are provided by Ohio junior or community colleges, commonly as an Associate Degree in Electrical Technology. They furnish a more well-rounded education while supplying the foundation that prepares students to enter into their apprenticeship program.

As earlier stated, Bachelor’s Degrees are accessible at certain Ohio institutions, but are less popular at four years than the other briefer programs. Most states mandate that an apprenticeship of at least 2 years and more typically 4 years be completed before licensing. Therefore, the majority of students are eager to commence their paid apprenticeship, particularly if it’s not a component of their academic program.

Electrician License and Certification Criteria

Orwell OH electrician wiring boxElectricians in Orwell OH can undertake a multitude of tasks, including testing, installing and replacing electrical systems, and ensuring that the wiring in houses and buildings comply with code standards. After completing an apprenticeship, journeyman electricians are required to become licensed in the majority of municipalities and states. The duration of apprenticeship differs by state, but usually about four to five years of prior experience is needed in order to take the licensing examination. The exams typically evaluate general knowledge and electrical theory, along with understanding of the National Electrical Code (NEC). Receiving certification is also a voluntary method for an electrician to distinguish her or himself as a skilled and experienced professional. The certifications offered vary by state and can be earned in many specialties, such as cable splicing as an example. The certification procedure usually entails three levels of proficiency:

  • An experience requirement
  • Passing a written exam
  • Passing a practical exam

Examples of certifying organizations include the National Joint Apprenticeship and Training Committee (NJATC) and also the National Institute for Certification in Engineering Technologies (NICET). It’s crucial that the electrician trade school that you choose not only provides a solid academic foundation, but also helps prep you for passing any licensing and certification exams that you might be required to pass in the future.

Attending Electrician Programs Online

Orwell OH student attending electrician school onlineA possibility that you might have considered is selecting an online electrician school to earn a certificate or degree. Although online training programs are becoming more accepted as a means of attending class without needing to travel, in this situation they are not totally internet based. Pretty much all electrician training programs require some attendance on campus to receive hands-on practical training. But since the remainder of the classes can be attended online, internet learning might be a more practical option for students that have limited time for schooling. And as an added benefit many online training programs have a reduced tuition cost compared to their on-campus competitors. Commuting costs from Orwell OH are also minimized and a portion of the study materials can be accessed online also. Each of these benefits can make online electrician trade schools more affordable and convenient. And many are fully accredited, which we will discuss in our due diligence checklist.

Things to Ask Electrician Trade Schools

Questions to ask Orwell OH electrician schoolsOnce you have made a decision to obtain a diploma, certificate or degree, you can start to narrow down your school options. Since there are so many electrician vocational and trade schools in the Orwell OH region, it’s essential to have a checklist of qualifications that each school must meet. The first two that we mentioned were location and tuition expense. If you have an interest in earning an online degree, then that needs to be a feature that your final school offers. And even though all three qualifiers may be critical when making your decision, there are additional factors that need to be considered also. Following is a checklist of those additional qualifications that you will need to assess before enrolling in an electrical tech school.

Accreditation.  A large number of electrician vocational programs have acquired either a regional or a national accreditation. They may attain Institutional Accreditation, which focuses on the school’s programs overall, or Programmatic Accreditation, which pertains to an individual program, such as electrical technology. Make certain that the Orwell OH program is accredited by a U.S. Department of Education acknowledged accrediting organization, for instance the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology. Along with helping make certain that you get a superior education, it may assist in acquiring financial assistance or student loans, which are in many cases unavailable for non-accredited programs. Also, some states mandate that the electrician training course be accredited in order to be approved for licensing.

High Completion and Placement Rates.  Ask the electrician schools you are reviewing what their completion rates are. The completion rate is the portion or percentage of students who enroll in and complete the course. A lower completion rate could signify that students were dissatisfied with the course and dropped out. It could also indicate that the teachers were not competent to instruct the students. It’s similarly essential that the schools have high job placement rates. Older and/or more reputable schools may have a broader directory of graduates, which may mean more contacts for the school to use for their apprenticeship and job placement programs. A high job placement rate can not only validate that the school has an excellent reputation within the trade, but also that it has the network of contacts to help Orwell OH students acquire apprenticeships or jobs.

Apprenticeship Programs.  Numerous electrician technical programs are taught together with an apprenticeship or an internship program. Those participating trade and technical programs will help place you in an apprenticeship program within their network of electrical companies or labor unions. Find out if the schools you are reviewing have working relationships with Orwell OH area electricians or electrical companies. An apprenticeship not only offers a valuable experience by furnishing hands-on training, but it also provides job opportunities and helps to form relationships in the regional electrician professional community.

Modern Facilities.  Make certain that the school facilities and the equipment that you will be trained on are state-of-the-art and what you will be working with in the field. If you are currently in an internship or an apprenticeship, check with the electrical technician you are working with regarding what you should be expecting. If not, ask a local Orwell OH electrical company if they can provide some suggestions. Also keep in mind that unless you can move, the school needs to be within driving distance of your Orwell home. Take note that if you decide to attend an out-of-state school, besides the added relocation costs there may be higher tuition charges compared to in-state residents.

Smaller Classes.   It’s desirable that you receive as much personalized instruction as possible, which can be challenging in bigger classes. Ask if you can sit in on a few of the classes so that you can see how big they are and witness first hand the interaction between instructors and students. Speak with some of the students and get their opinions concerning class sizes and instruction. Last, talk with some of the instructors and learn what their level of experience is and what degrees or certifications they have earned.

Flexible Scheduling.  Verify that the class schedules for the schools you are evaluating are flexible enough to handle your needs. If you can only attend classes in the evening or on weekends near Orwell OH, confirm that the programs you are looking at offer those choices. If you can only attend part-time, make certain that the school you select permits part-time enrollment. Finally, check out what the protocol is to make-up classes should you miss any due to work, illness or family emergencies.
