West Elkton OH electrician working on circuit boardThe first step to learning to be an electrical tradesman or contractor is finding an electrician trade school near West Elkton OH. But with so many technical schools to pick from, just how do you tackle making certain that you enroll in the ideal one? Particularly because there are so many variables to examine. For example, some students will start by searching for schools that are nearby their home. After they have identified a few that are within commuting distance, they will decide on the one with the most affordable tuition. Even though location and cost are important, they are not the sole factors that should be evaluated. Also critical are the accreditation and reputations of the schools, as well as their job placement and graduation rates. These and other qualifiers should influence your final decision when picking an electrician trade school. We will cover that checklist in more detail later in this article. But to begin with, let’s talk a little bit about being an electrician and the educational choices that are accessible.

Electrician Diploma, Certificate and Degree Options

West Elkton OH electrician on power line poleThere are multiple ways to receive electrician instruction in a vocational or trade school near West Elkton OH. You can choose a diploma or certificate program, or receive an Associate Degree. Bachelor’s Degrees are available at some schools, but are not as common as the first three alternatives. In many cases these programs are made available together with an apprenticeship, which are required by most states in order to become licensed or if you want to earn certification. Following are short explanations of the 3 most typical programs available.

  • Diploma and Certificate Programs are typically offered by Ohio technical and trade schools and take about a year to complete. They provide a good foundation and are aimed towards those who would like to enter an apprenticeship more quickly as a journeyman electrician.
  • Associate Degrees take 2 years to complete and are offered by Ohio community colleges, commonly as an Associate Degree in Electrical Technology. They offer a more comprehensive education while supplying the foundation that readies students to begin their apprenticeship program.

As earlier stated, Bachelor’s Degree programs are accessible at some Ohio colleges, but are less preferred at 4 years than the other briefer programs. Most states mandate that an apprenticeship of at least 2 years and in most cases four years be carried out prior to licensing. Therefore, many students are anxious to commence their paid apprenticeship, especially if it’s not part of their academic program.

Electrician Certification and Licensing Prerequisites

West Elkton OH electrician wiring boxElectricians in West Elkton OH can undertake a vast array of tasks, such as testing, installing and replacing electrical systems, and making sure that the wiring in houses and buildings are up to code standards. After completing an apprenticeship, journeyman electricians are required to become licensed in the majority of municipalities and states. The duration of apprenticeship differs by state, but generally around 4 to 5 years of prior experience is required in order to take the licensing exam. The exams commonly test electrical theory and general knowledge, as well as understanding of the National Electrical Code (NEC). Obtaining certification is also a voluntary way for an electrician to differentiate him or herself as a experienced and skilled professional. The certifications available vary by state and can be obtained in several specializations, including cable splicing as an example. The certification procedure in most cases includes 3 levels of proficiency:

  • An experience requirement
  • Passing a written exam
  • Passing a practical exam

Examples of certifying organizations include the National Joint Apprenticeship and Training Committee (NJATC) along with the National Institute for Certification in Engineering Technologies (NICET). It’s imperative that the electrician trade school that you enroll in not only delivers a solid educational foundation, but also helps ready you for passing any certification and licensing examinations that you may be required to take in the future.

Attending Electrician Online Programs

West Elkton OH student attending electrician school onlineAn option that you might have contemplated is choosing an online electrician program to earn a certificate or degree. Although online training programs are becoming more popular as a way of attending class without needing to travel, in this instance they are not entirely internet based. Just about all electrician schools require partial attendance on-campus to get hands-on practical training. But since the rest of the classes can be accessed online, distance learning can be a more practical choice for individuals that have minimal time for schooling. And as a bonus numerous online degree programs have a lower tuition cost compared to their on campus competitors. Travelling costs from West Elkton OH are also reduced and some of the study materials can be available online also. All of these advantages can make online electrician tech schools more affordable and accessible. And many are fully accredited, which we will address in our due diligence checklist.

Questions to Ask Electrician Vocational Schools

Questions to ask West Elkton OH electrician schoolsOnce you have made a decision to earn a diploma, certificate or degree, you can begin to narrow down your school options. Since there are numerous electrician trade and vocational schools in the West Elkton OH area, it’s imperative to have a checklist of criteria that each school must meet. The initial 2 that we mentioned were location and the cost of tuition. If you are interested in earning an degree online, then that needs to be a feature that your chosen school offers. And while all three qualifiers may be crucial when making your determination, there are additional variables that must be considered also. Following is a checklist of those additional qualifications that you will need to assess prior to choosing an electrical trade school.

Accreditation.  A large number of electrician vocational programs have attained either a regional or a national accreditation. They may receive Institutional Accreditation, which involves the school’s programs overall, or Programmatic Accreditation, which pertains to an individual program, for example electrical technology. Make sure that the West Elkton OH program is accredited by a U.S. Department of Education acknowledged accrediting organization, for instance the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology. In addition to helping ensure that you obtain a quality education, it can help in securing financial aid or student loans, which are frequently not available for non-accredited programs. Additionally, many states mandate that the electrician training program be accredited in order to qualify for licensing.

High Completion and Placement Rates.  Ask the electrician training programs you are looking at what their completion rates are. The completion rate is the portion or percentage of students who enroll in and finish the program. A lower completion rate might suggest that students were disappointed with the program and quit. It might also indicate that the teachers were not qualified to train the students. It’s also imperative that the schools have higher job placement rates. Older and/or more reputable schools may have a broader directory of alumni, which may result in more contacts for the school to utilize for their apprenticeship and job placement programs. A high job placement rate will not only confirm that the school has a good reputation within the trade, but additionally that it has the network of contacts to help West Elkton OH students acquire apprenticeships or jobs.

Apprenticeship Programs.  Numerous electrician training programs are taught along with an internship or an apprenticeship program. Those participating technical and vocational programs will help place you in an apprenticeship program within their network of electrical contractors or trade unions. Ask if the schools you are comparing have referring relationships with West Elkton OH area electricians or electrical contractors. An apprenticeship not only provides a valuable experience by furnishing practical training, but it also provides employment opportunities and helps to establish relationships in the regional electrician professional community.

Modern Facilities.  Confirm that the campus facilities and the equipment that you will be trained on are up-to-date and what you will be using in the field. If you are currently in an internship or an apprenticeship, check with the electrical specialist you are working with concerning what you should be looking for. Otherwise, ask a local West Elkton OH electrical company if they can give you some tips. Additionally keep in mind that unless you can relocate, the school must be within driving distance of your West Elkton home. Take note that if you decide to enroll in an out-of-state school, besides the added relocation costs there may be higher tuition fees compared to in-state residents.

Smaller Classes.   It’s important that you get as much one-on-one training as possible, which can be challenging in larger classes. Ask if you can sit in on some of the classes so that you can see how big they are and experience the interaction between teachers and students. Speak with some of the students and get their feedback relating to class sizes and instruction. Finally, talk to a few of the instructors and find out what their level of expertise is and what certifications or degrees they have earned.

Flexible Scheduling.  Make sure that the class schedules for the schools you are assessing are flexible enough to fulfill your needs. If you can only attend classes in the evening or on weekends near West Elkton OH, confirm that the schools you are reviewing offer those choices. If you can only attend on a part-time basis, make certain that the school you select permits part-time enrollment. Additionally, find out what the policy is to make-up classes should you miss any due to work, sickness or family responsibilities.

Classes should be small in size and each student should have their personal equipment to train with. Classroom teaching should provide a real-world context, and the training program should be up-to-date and in-line with industry standards. Programs differ in length and the kind of credential provided, so you will need to decide what length of program and degree or certificate will best serve your needs. Each program offers different options for certification also. Perhaps the best means to research your final list of schools is to go to each campus and talk with the students and faculty.
