Cyril OK electrician working on circuit boardThe first step to becoming an electrical contractor or tradesman is finding an electrician trade school near Cyril OK. But with so many technical schools to pick from, just how do you go about making certain that you enroll in the ideal one? Especially because there are so many points to consider. For instance, some prospective students will start by looking for schools that are nearby their home. After they have identified some that are within commuting range, they will select the one with the cheapest tuition. Even though location and cost are of importance, they are not the only things that should be examined. Also important are the accreditation and reputations of the schools, along with their graduation and job placement rates. These and additional qualifiers should influence your final decision when choosing an electrician training school. We will discuss that checklist in more detail later in this article. Electrician Diploma, Certificate and Degree Options

Cyril OK electrician on power line poleThere are three general options to get electrician training in a vocational or trade school near Cyril OK. You can choose a certificate or diploma program, or receive an Associate Degree. Bachelor’s Degrees are obtainable at certain schools, but are not as prevalent as the other three options. Often these programs are offered combined with an apprenticeship, which are mandated by the majority of states in order to become licensed or if you intend to become certified. Bellow are short summaries of the three most prevalent programs available.

  • Certificate and Diploma Programs are generally provided by Oklahoma vocational and trade schools and require about a year to finish. They provide a solid foundation and are geared towards individuals who want to get into an apprenticeship more quickly as a journeyman electrician.
  • Associate Degree Programs take 2 years to complete and are provided by Oklahoma community colleges, commonly as an Associate Degree in Electrical Technology. They provide a more extensive education while supplying the foundation that prepares students to enter into their apprenticeship program.

As earlier mentioned, Bachelor’s Degree programs are accessible at some Oklahoma institutions, but are less preferred at four years than the other shorter programs. Most states require that an apprenticeship of at least 2 years and in most cases four years be completed prior to licensing. Therefore, most students are eager to start their paid apprenticeship, particularly if it’s not part of their academic program.

Electrician Certification and Licensing Prerequisites

Cyril OK electrician wiring boxElectricians in Cyril OK can carry out a vast array of duties, such as installing, replacing and testing electrical systems, and ensuring that the wiring in buildings and homes comply with code standards. After completing an apprenticeship, journeyman electricians are mandated to be licensed in most states or municipalities. The duration of apprenticeship differs by state, but typically around 4 to 5 years of practical experience is called for in order to take the licensing exam. The exams typically test general knowledge and electrical theory, along with understanding of the National Electrical Code (NEC). Obtaining certification is also a voluntary means for an electrician to distinguish him or herself as a experienced and skilled professional. The certifications available differ by state and may be obtained in numerous specialties, including cable splicing as an example. The certification procedure usually entails 3 levels of proficiency:

  • An experience requirement
  • Passing a written exam
  • Passing a practical exam

Examples of certifying agencies include the National Joint Apprenticeship and Training Committee (NJATC) and also the National Institute for Certification in Engineering Technologies (NICET). It’s imperative that the electrician trade school that you choose not only delivers a strong academic foundation, but also helps prep you for passing any licensing and certification exams that you may be required to take in the future.

Cyril OK student attending electrician school onlineA possibility that you might have looked at is enrolling in an online electrician program to earn a certificate or degree. Just about all electrician training programs require some attendance on campus to obtain hands-on practical training. But since the rest of the classes can be accessed online, internet learning might be a more practical option for individuals that have minimal time for education. And as a bonus many online degree programs have a cheaper tuition cost compared to their traditional alternatives. Driving costs from Cyril OK are also minimized and a portion of the study materials can be available on line also. All of these benefits can make electrician online trade schools more economical and accessible. And a number are fully accredited, which we will cover in our due diligence checklist.

Questions to Ask Electrician Training Schools

Questions to ask Cyril OK electrician schoolsNow that you have decided to obtain a certificate, diploma or degree, you can start to focus your training options. Because there are so many electrician tech and trade schools in the Cyril OK area, it’s essential to have a checklist of qualifications that each program must meet. The initial two that we talked about were location and the cost of tuition. If you have an interest in earning an online degree, then that needs to be an option that your chosen school offers. And even though all three qualifiers may be crucial when making your decision, there are other variables that must be considered as well. Following is a checklist of those additional qualifications that you will need to research prior to choosing an electrical technical school.

Accreditation.  A large number of electrician technical schools have acquired either a regional or a national accreditation. They may receive Institutional Accreditation, which involves the school’s programs as a whole, or Programmatic Accreditation, which pertains to an individual program, for example electrical technology. Make sure that the Cyril OK program and school are accredited by a U.S. Department of Education approved accrediting organization, which includes the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology. In addition to helping guarantee that you receive an excellent education, it may assist in obtaining financial aid or student loans, which are frequently not available for non-accredited schools. Additionally, some states require that the electrician training course be accredited for it to be approved for licensing.

High Completion and Placement Rates.  Ask the electrician training programs you are reviewing what their completion rates are. The completion rate is the percentage of students who enroll in and finish the program. A low completion rate could suggest that students were dissatisfied with the course and quit. It might also signify that the teachers were not competent to instruct the students. It’s similarly important that the schools have higher job placement rates. Older and/or more reputable schools may have a more extensive directory of graduates, which can produce more contacts for the school to employ for their apprenticeship and job placement programs. A high job placement rate can not only validate that the school has an excellent reputation within the industry, but additionally that it has the network of contacts to help Cyril OK graduates acquire apprenticeships or jobs.

Apprenticeship Programs.  A large number of electrician technical programs are taught in conjunction with an apprenticeship or an internship program. Those participating technical and vocational schools will help place you in an apprenticeship program inside their network of electrical businesses or trade unions. Ask if the schools you are reviewing have referring partnerships with Cyril OK area electricians or electrical companies. An apprenticeship not only provides a valuable experience by providing hands-on training, but it also supplies employment opportunities and helps to establish relationships in the local electrician professional community.

Modern Facilities.  Make certain that the school facilities and the tools that you will be trained on are state-of-the-art and what you will be working with in the field. If you are already in an internship or an apprenticeship, talk to the electrical technician you are working with regarding what you should be expecting. Otherwise, ask a local Cyril OK electrical contracting company if they can give you some tips. Additionally bear in mind that unless you can relocate, the school must be within driving distance of your Cyril home. Take note that if you decide to attend an out-of-state school, in addition to moving costs there might be increased tuition fees compared to in-state residents.

Smaller Classes.   It’s desirable that you receive as much one-on-one training as possible, which can be challenging in larger classes. Ask if you can sit in on a couple of the classes so that you can see how large they are and witness first hand the interaction between students and instructors. Talk to a few of the students and get their opinions regarding class sizes and instruction. Last, speak to a few of the teachers and learn what their level of expertise is and what certifications or degrees they hold.

Flexible Scheduling.  Make sure that the class schedules for the schools you are assessing are flexible enough to meet your needs. If you are only able to attend classes in the evening or on weekends near Cyril OK, verify that the programs you are looking at provide those options. If you can only attend on a part-time basis, make sure that the school you select offers part-time enrollment. Finally, ask what the protocol is to make-up classes should you miss any due to work, illness or family issues.
