Electrician Certificate, Diploma and Degree Options

Grass Valley OR electrician on power line poleThere are several approaches to receive electrician training in a trade or technical school near Grass Valley OR. You may select a certificate or diploma program, or receive an Associate Degree. Bachelor’s Degrees are obtainable at certain schools, but are not as common as the first three options. In many cases these programs are offered together with an apprenticeship program, which are mandated by the majority of states to become licensed or if you wish to earn certification. Bellow are short summaries of the 3 most typical programs offered.

  • Diploma and Certificate Programs are usually offered by Oregon vocational and trade schools and take about a year to finish. They furnish a good foundation and are aimed towards individuals who would like to enter an apprenticeship more quickly as a journeyman electrician.
  • Associate Degree Programs take 2 years to complete and are offered by Oregon junior or community colleges, typically as an Associate Degree in Electrical Technology. They offer a more well-rounded education while supplying the foundation that prepares students to enter into their apprenticeship program.

As previously mentioned, Bachelor’s Degrees are offered at some Oregon institutions, but are less preferred at four years than the other shorter programs. Most states mandate that an apprenticeship of no less than 2 years and more typically 4 years be completed prior to licensing. Because of that, the majority of students are anxious to begin their paid apprenticeship, especially if it’s not part of their academic program.

Obtaining certification is also a voluntary means for an electrician to identify him or herself as a experienced and skilled professional. The certifications available vary by state and may be earned in many specialties, such as cable splicing as an example. The certification procedure usually entails 3 levels of proficiency:

  • An experience requirement
  • Passing a written exam

Examples of certifying agencies include the National Joint Apprenticeship and Training Committee (NJATC) as well as the National Institute for Certification in Engineering Technologies (NICET).
