Elizabethville PA electrician working on circuit boardThe first step to becoming an electrical contractor or tradesman is enrolling in an electrician trade school near Elizabethville PA. But with so many technical schools to choose from, just how do you go about making sure that you enroll in the ideal one? Especially since there are so many variables to examine. For instance, some potential students will begin by looking for schools that are nearby their home. After they have identified several that are within driving distance, they will pick the one with the lowest tuition. Although cost and location are important, they are not the sole factors that should be considered. Also critical are the reputations of the schools, their accreditation, in addition to their graduation and job placement rates. These and additional qualifiers should help mold your final decision when picking an electrician trade school. We will cover that checklist in greater detail later in this post. Electrician Degree, Diploma and Certificate Options

Elizabethville PA electrician on power line poleThere are three general approaches to obtain electrician training in a vocational or trade school near Elizabethville PA. You can select a diploma or certificate program, or obtain an Associate Degree. Bachelor’s Degrees are obtainable at a few schools, but are not as common as the first three alternatives. In many cases these programs are offered combined with an apprenticeship, which are mandated by the majority of states in order to be licensed or if you wish to become certified. Following are short summaries of the 3 most prevalent programs offered.

  • Diploma and Certificate Programs are usually offered by Pennsylvania vocational and trade schools and take approximately a year to finish. They provide a good foundation and are geared towards students who would like to join an apprenticeship faster as a journeyman electrician.
  • Associate Degrees involve two years to finish and are provided by Pennsylvania community colleges, commonly as an Associate Degree in Electrical Technology. They provide a more extensive education while supplying the foundation that prepares students to enter into their apprenticeship program.

As earlier mentioned, Bachelor’s Degree programs are available at certain Pennsylvania institutions, but are less favored at 4 years than the other shorter programs. The majority of states require that an apprenticeship of no less than 2 years and more typically four years be performed before licensing. For that reason, the majority of students are anxious to start their paid apprenticeship, especially if it’s not a component of their academic program.

Electrician Licensing and Certification Criteria

Elizabethville PA electrician wiring boxElectricians in Elizabethville PA can carry out a wide range of duties, including testing, installing and replacing electrical systems, and making sure that the wiring in houses and buildings are up to code standards. After concluding an apprenticeship, journeyman electricians are required to be licensed in the majority of states or municipalities. The duration of apprenticeship differs by state, but commonly around 4 to 5 years of experience is required in order to take the licensing examination. The exams typically test electrical theory and general knowledge, along with knowledge of the National Electrical Code (NEC). Receiving certification is also an optional method for an electrician to distinguish her or himself as a experienced and skilled professional. The certifications offered vary by state and can be obtained in various specialties, such as cable splicing as an example. The certification process in most cases includes three levels of proficiency:

  • An experience requirement
  • Passing a written exam
  • Passing a practical exam

Examples of certifying organizations include the National Joint Apprenticeship and Training Committee (NJATC) and also the National Institute for Certification in Engineering Technologies (NICET). It’s important that the electrician tech school that you select not only delivers a solid educational foundation, but also helps ready you for passing any certification and licensing exams that you might be required to take in the future.

Enrolling in Electrician Online Programs

Elizabethville PA student attending electrician school onlineAn alternative that you might have contemplated is selecting an online electrician school to earn a degree or a certificate. Although online training programs are becoming more prevalent as a means of attending class without the need for travel, in this case they are not completely internet based. Just about all electrician training programs require partial attendance on-campus to obtain hands-on practical training. But since the rest of the classes may be attended online, distance learning might be a more convenient alternative for students that have limited time for schooling. And as a bonus many online degree programs have a cheaper tuition cost compared to their on-campus counterparts. Commuting expenses from Elizabethville PA are also minimized and some of the study materials may be available on line also. All of these advantages can make online electrician vocational schools more economical and accessible. And many are fully accredited, which we will address in our questions to ask checklist.

Questions to Ask Electrician Tech Schools

Questions to ask Elizabethville PA electrician schoolsOnce you have made a decision to earn a diploma, certificate or degree, you can start to focus your training options. Because there are numerous electrician trade and vocational schools in the Elizabethville PA area, it’s imperative to have a checklist of criteria that each school must satisfy. The first 2 that we discussed were location and the cost of tuition. If you are interested in earning an online degree, then that must be an option that your chosen school offers. And while all three qualifiers may be important when making your decision, there are additional factors that need to be taken into account also. Following is a checklist of those additional qualifications that you will need to research before enrolling in an electrical vocational school.

Accreditation.  A large number of electrician technical programs have attained either a regional or a national accreditation. They can receive Institutional Accreditation, which involves the school’s programs overall, or Programmatic Accreditation, which relates to a specific program, such as electrical technology. Confirm that the Elizabethville PA program is accredited by a U.S. Department of Education acknowledged accrediting agency, which includes the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology. In addition to helping ensure that you obtain a quality education, it may help in securing financial assistance or student loans, which are in many cases not available for non-accredited programs. Additionally, many states mandate that the electrician training course be accredited in order to qualify for licensing.

High Completion and Placement Rates.  Ask the electrician training programs you are looking at what their completion rates are. The completion rate is the percentage or portion of students who enroll in and complete the course. A lower completion rate may suggest that students were unhappy with the program and dropped out. It might also signify that the instructors were not competent to train the students. It’s also imperative that the schools have high job placement rates. Older and/or more reputable schools may have a more extensive list of alumni, which can result in more contacts for the school to utilize for their apprenticeship and job placement programs. A high job placement rate will not only affirm that the school has an excellent reputation within the industry, but additionally that it has the network of contacts to help Elizabethville PA graduates acquire apprenticeships or jobs.

Apprenticeship Programs.  Numerous electrician technical programs are taught along with an apprenticeship or an internship program. Those participating trade and technical schools will help place you in an apprenticeship program inside their network of electrician companies or labor unions. Check if the schools you are reviewing have referring relationships with Elizabethville PA area electricians or electrical contractors. An apprenticeship not only provides a rewarding experience by furnishing hands-on training, but it also furnishes job opportunities and helps to establish relationships in the regional electrician professional community.

Modern Facilities.  Make certain that the campus facilities and the tools that you will be trained on are state-of-the-art and what you will be using on the job. If you are already in an internship or an apprenticeship, talk to the electrical tech you are working with regarding what you should be expecting. Otherwise, ask a local Elizabethville PA electrical contracting company if they can provide some tips. Additionally bear in mind that unless you can move, the school must be within commuting distance of your Elizabethville home. Take note that if you decide to attend an out-of-state school, besides the added moving costs there can be increased tuition charges compared to in-state residents.

Smaller Classes.   It’s important that you receive as much individualized instruction as possible, which can be difficult in larger classes. Ask if you can monitor some of the classes so that you can observe how big they are and witness first hand the interaction between students and instructors. Talk to several of the students and get their comments relating to class sizes and instruction. Last, speak with a few of the teachers and find out what their level of expertise is and what certifications or degrees they hold.

Flexible Scheduling.  Confirm that the class schedules for the programs you are assessing are flexible enough to fulfill your needs. If you are only able to go to classes at night or on weekends near Elizabethville PA, check that the schools you are looking at offer those options. If you can only attend on a part-time basis, be sure that the school you select permits part-time enrollment. Additionally, find out what the policy is to make-up classes should you miss any due to work, sickness or family issues.
